Andrew Webster being somewhat critical! Did someone at the Bears touch him in a naughty place?

Andrew Webster Commentary:
Why on earth would Mal Meninga, a rugby league legend with absolutely nothing to prove, want to coach the Perth Bears?
There’s no question the 64-year-old is joining the franchise for the right reasons, firm in the belief that rugby league can make some noise in the AFL stronghold.
But there are so many spiders crawling all over this hastily conceived concept that it’s starting to resemble a scene from Arachnophobia.
It’s less than five months until the team needs to dive headfirst into the player market on November 1 but, as it stands, has only appointed chief executive Anthony De Ceglie, a media man who knows nothing about the NRL let alone starting up a new football club.
He does, however, have a good relationship with ARL Commission chair Peter V’landys. Tick!
So far, they don’t have an all-important general manager of football (the NRL should throw the bank at Bulldogs boss Phil Gould), a gun recruitment manager, or the capable assistant coaches Meninga will need.
You can’t dismiss Big Mal’s coaching credentials, having led Queensland and Australia on successful runs, but he’s not accustomed of the grind of the NRL.
His stature means he can be for Perth what Kevin Sheedy was to the GWS Giants when they entered the AFL premiership in 2012, but people seem to forget how much runway the Giants had before they played their first match that season.
May be an image of 3 people and text that says 'STEEDEN ฮ COMMENTARY What is Meninga doing joining a mess like the Perth Bears? The NRL legend is the only plus for the expansion club that lacks infrastructure and rugby league IQ.'

well they are certainly doing betten than the Tassie Devils, which now may not get off the ground

talk abot a black eye for the AFL
One hell of a staring contest/game of chicken, between the AFL and Tasmania over that stadium.

I suspect there may be a compromise coming where Tasmania builds the stadium without a the roof (maybe provision in the build to retro-fit it later) and claim that as a win - especially if it shaves money off the cost?

That kinda thing is the only way both sides get to save face out of the situation.

Perth has rolled out the royal welcome for State of Origin with the godfather of West Australian sport declaring there is enough room for the Bears in the state.
NSW took to the field at the future home of the NRL club on Monday for an opposed session, facing a composite side drawn from local league players and Super Rugby side the Western Force.
Also in attendance at HBF Park were UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena, former Perth Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy and cricket legends Mike Hussey and Justin Langer.
No voice carries more weight in West Australian sport than that of Langer, who was revered in the state during his international cricket playing and coaching careers, and sits on the West Coast Eagles' board.
And while the Bears will run through the same winter season as the Eagles once they enter the NRL in 2027, Langer said there was no doubt the city had room for both major football codes.
"There's enough people and enough people to support their different codes," Langer said.
"The West love their sport. We see it in the summer with the Glory (soccer) as well. The Wildcats (basketball), of course. There is a good following for the Force in rugby union.
"A lot of eastern staters come over and work over here. So I get where that passion and energy is coming from."
Langer will be at State of Origin II at Optus on Wednesday night, and said he had long been a league fan after being caught in the middle of passionate Queenslanders and NSW players in the Australian cricket squad.
"When I was 18, I went to the cricket academy. I didn't really know about rugby league," Langer said.
"But then they told me this thing about the State of Origin. I was like, 'Righto'.
"But I watched my first State of Origin game. You talk about sport and passion. And the passion, right? And I love that."
Langer referenced the intense following for West Coast and Fremantle among West Australians.
"There's passion for the game," he said, "but New South Wales and Queensland, man. That's gold."
Della Maddalena said he had been won over by the history of Origin fights, with Justin Hodges and Eric Grothe's an early memory.
The WA local posed for photos with Blues stars Payne Haas and Stefano Utoikamanu with the UFC welterweight belt he won from Belal Muhammad last month.
"There are some big boys, I reckon they would flatten me," Della Maddalena quipped.
"I was a rugby union man growing up, but I've always loved State of Origin. I got into it because of the biffs, but they've slowed down a bit now.
"I think there is a big following here for rugby league, so to have our own team is exciting stuff."

Anthony De Ceglie has never run a professional sports team, but that’s not stopping the new Perth Bears chief executive officer from thinking big – and thinking like a Hollywood actor.
“I’m also thinking about a documentary. Could we become Australia’s version of Wrexham? I think it’s a no-brainer,” the new Perth Bears chief executive told The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday. “There are endless possibilities.”

The 39-year-old former Seven West Media (Channel 7 – Australia) news director shocked the industry when he left his newsroom post to take on the helm of the NRL’s most ambitious expansion club yet.
His sudden appointment was apparently brokered at a Sydney wedding by his longtime friend and ARLC chairman Peter V’landys, which sparked criticism over transparency and his lack of rugby league credentials.
With rugby league rising to the top in Australia, who can question V’landys’ vision. Meanwhile De Ceglie appears unfazed.
“I learnt a long time ago to ignore the noise,” he said. “At the end of the day, I’ve always been the sort of person to take bold steps, take risks and swing for home runs.”
His blueprint is simple. Reunite the historic North Sydney Bears with Perth’s rugby league hopes in what he calls a “coast-to-coast rugby league marriage.”

“The most crucial role I have is protecting the legacy and history of the North Sydney Bears and bringing them together with league fans in Western Australia in a respectful marriage,” he said.
“The Bears are such an iconic part of rugby league. We want their fans to feel and know that this is their club too.”
De Ceglie says he’s already planning to lobby for government funding to revive the old North Sydney Oval, where the Bears last played way back in 1999.
“I think we can definitely play games there,” he said. “Whether it’s trial games or official NRL matches … That tradition is very important to us.”
Winning hearts in the AFL mad city of Perth will be the real challenge for the media man, but he’s confident there is room for two.
“Is there room for another major sporting franchise in Perth? One hundred per cent there is,” he said. “There’s nothing to say you can’t be an AFL and NRL fan.”

The reverse is evident in places like rugby league mad south east Queensland who have both a strong NRL and AFL presence, with the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns, both rising in skill and popularity in the region.
It’s no shock that the Bears boss is big on storytelling and fan access – two things he says most Aussie clubs still haven’t nailed.
“I actually think the Perth Bears could become the most innovative and most media-savvy sporting club in Australia,” De Ceglie said.
“We’re starting from scratch and can do that.”
The appointment of rugby league legend Mal Meninga as the inaugural head coach marks the Bears’ first major statement of intent.
De Ceglie says the response from around the league has been overwhelming.
“Perth makes rugby league legitimately a national competition. A strong Perth makes for a strong NRL,” he said. “I honestly believe in the first five years we can be in the top five NRL clubs commercially.”

From steakhouse strategy sessions to stadium upgrades and streaming dreams, De Ceglie’s plans for the Bears are more than bold – they’re likely to be streamed.
And with the rugby league broadcast rights currently being reviewed, the grander vision of a world game might be one step closer.

So no news, nothing on Perth Bears logo announcement or anything still? Is this literally going to be a curtain raiser before Origin?
