What do you base this claim on?

From what I'm seeing! And others agree. Not just myself. And the question could be directed at you with respects to imploding established clubs in Australia's largest market and city? But we tolerate you!?

So your claim is based on no evidence?

I'm not making claims, I've giving opinions on a public forum.

? Have you been smoking the funny stuff!

This is how your posts read to everyone else.

But seriously, you want to revitalise RL in North Sydney by moving the Bears to the Central Coast, using your same logic, what is so rediculous about revitalising Manly by moving them to Perth?

? So you abandone an established area on that logic!? Incredible! Lol

Yes I would - in a heartbeat if there are clubs that are performing poorly, are poorly run and and stunting the growth of the game as a whole. No one part is bigger than the whole. There is no reason that 7.5 NRL clubs can't compete with 1.5 AFL clubs and 1 SuperRugby club.

Funnily enough, you are in favour of abandoning an established area too. You promote the idea of moving Norths to the Central Coast - lol

Because it's a different city ! People follow Manly because it's Manly Warringah Sea Eagles! Can you get that in your head!?People follow teamsuit and are mostly loyal to teams for various reasons. I have many Manly mates and they would be disgusted if something like you suggest was put forward. It also looks like Manly will be finally getting good a stadium upgrade so I'd rather positive than stuff up a whole area that follows rugby league.

You assume incorrectly. These clubs you deride are the basis for growth in this competition. You would rather go backwards and lose supporters in doing so and magically think the general public will latch onto a new found credibility with a brand new club ? Others believe the competition can keep its established supporter bases as well as grow with additional expansion clubs. You don't! We absolutely differ.

Another unfounded assumption. Pretty sure additional clubs would bring additional income streams! ? But some can't see this! ?

Some would pay for themselves (Perth, Brisbane 2, NZ 2) but not all will (CC Bears) and if it is that easy, then why has it not happened yet?

Norths went 20 years ago. The game is now bigger than ever. Melbourne have grown to dwarf the TV ratings of the Bears and their average attendances are past what the Bears achieved at any stage of their 90 year existence in the top flight. The same would happen in Perth if another Sydney club made room for them.

I'd hate to break it to you mate but the Central Coast is not in Sydney, so the Bears would be in a different city too. Not that it matters, fans engage with their team on TV in more than 10 times the numbers that they do attending the ground. The Sea Eagles could move to Perth and it wouldn't make a lick of difference to many of their fans - no one attends their games anyway.

It also looks like Manly will be finally getting good a stadium upgrade

No they aren't. It's a centre of excellence with 3000 seats at the northern end. Better than nothing but the place is still a dump and an embarrassment as an NRL venue.

At least you are appreciating that these clubs can raise income! That's an improvement! The Central Coast Bears would be more likely the instant success due to in place infrastructure, locality advantages, easy access travel (Rail way line) , nearby leagues club, modern stadium with seating for membership purposes in place, juniors in place, two areas to base it's support and the existing hibernating Bears fans that would come on board. And more I suggest!

Are you aware that the Central Coast is just north for northern Sydney! ? That's why it's a feasible move. Or just bring back the Bears for North Sydney if you like . But I think two areas is better than one!

It's not a case of support. The NRL should be at twenty teams right now. This code is good enough to be successful with additional clubs! And with proactive scheduling more teams as deemed strategically necessary within a conference style set up (similar to football in the USA-all clubs with equal status) Right now the current clubs plus the Central Coast Bears, Brisbane Dolphins , West Coast Pirates & take your pick (eg:Adelaide Dingoes , West Melbourne Magpies?,Wellington Orcas) should have been at play but the code suffered an untimely split in 1997 and the current scenario is the reality. I would also suggest a few name changes as well: East Sydney Roosters, Balmain Campbelltown Tigers and Auckland Warriors-(with green, blue, red &white colours).

Just answer the question.

All I'm asking for is a rough guesstimate of how many clubs you think the NRL can support before the house of cards comes crumbling down... How many teams can the player pool support, how many more games will broadcasters and/or streamers be willing to pay for, how many more times can the NRL split the pie before the slices are too small to sustain all the clubs, etc.

So what do you reckon, roughly 20, 26, 30, 36, 40+, ∞?

If you're interested I reckon that for the foreseeable future (so for the next 25 or so years) that the NRL Telstra Premiership can probably support about 22-26 before things start going pear shaped, what do you think?

I agree with your numbers. If Between 22 and 26 is feasible given population increases and decent development work along with associated infrastructure. We agree . The pie will get bigger if the negotiators are doing their job. More teams . More markets. And the player pool will grow commensurate with the expansion. Remembering it's a great code. Just needs better direction with prudent leadership.

Actually that's exactly why it's not a feasible move for the time being...

The Central Coast is within driving distance of 10 other clubs, the NRL is a recognised and well supported product on the CC, and it's a relatively small market that would be incapable of supporting it's own club unless the clubs managed to get a relatively high take up locally (so relatively large average crowds, 20k plus at least).

All of that means that the NRL doesn't need to crack the CC market cause they're already doing good business there, it's well within driving distance of more than half of the comp if any fans really want to attend regularly, and it's a small market that can't even support an A-league team without leaning on the Sydney market and the NRL cannot afford to have another club operating in Sydney.

Alright so if we agree that for the foreseeable future that the NRL can only support 26 clubs max then who misses out and why cause there're more then 26 regions that want or could support a spot?

If only it was that simple...
