How many casuals are really going to watch on a Monday after primetime games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and then sunday afternoon? 5 days of games is great for us who watch a lot, but it's oversaturated for most people. Adding Monday would either hurt the ratings of other primetime games, or will kill the ratings for the 2nd half of the season once everyone is burnt out

EPL = 7 games saturday, 2 on sunday and 1 on monday
NFL = 1 thursday and monday, the rest on sunday half of which are at the same time
NBA every day, but their nationally televised games only get 1-2m

Apart from NBA/MLB etc where teams play a thousand games each, what sports spread their games over such a large portion of the week? And do any of them have high ratings?
On streaming there is no need to be all stand alone slots. You could stream three games at once and have viewers choice. Most probably watch on catch up or minis now anyways. If you've got 200k subscribers doesn't matter if 100k are watching one game and 100k are watching the other, as long as all 200k are still paying their subs.

It doesnt really matter where the revenue comes from as long as they are profitable.

They would benefit from bigger crowds though. Three AFL clubs have released reports already showing that gate/membership is worth about 1/3rd of their revenue and worth much more than their AFL distributions (Hawthorn 17m, Essendon 20m, Collingwood 28m). For the NRL, almost every NSW club will come underneath 5 million- parra may be an exception this year.
With the arlc funding at 130 percent of the cap every club is now profitable

if they increase crowds where’s it going to go ? They can’t legally spend more on players

plus they’ve all still got leagues clubs that can tip in millions more pa, but now don’t need too with the funding model in place for the arlc

league crowds have been bouncing around between 15 and 16k for donkeys years

even with new grounds I can’t see the average going up much with an absolute upper ceiling of 20k

with so many unfriendly time slots for crowds it’s just impossible to get massive crowd growth

they can do a lot more on memberships though

Under gallop they were pushing those way more than now it seems

I can see both dolphins and Perth nrl team getting over 16k so they will push our average up

that makes too much sense. should have a 'super Sunday' with three games at 2pm. if one game's rubbish you can switch to another one.

Plebs are the folk that must now sit on their lounge at home to watch games

Because their old halfway line seating, food, parking and schediling have been priced out of their ability to attend
It’s been 50 to 80 bucks to sit on a half way line at most Sydney games for ages

the Jane try stand is full of concrete cancer and could be condemned any minute but I remember getting slugged 80 dollars for tickets

Nah fox will pay peanuts for overlapping games

The point is that fox doesn't get all the games. Look at the NFL. They have 8 games at the same time across 2 networks plus streaming services. The weekend of games is across 5 different networks/Amazon plus streaming services.

Selling everything to 2 parties reduces the revenue we could get as you effectively eliminate 10 for example who can't afford to buy every game, but would love an exclusive, high rating program on a Friday night. Ch9 and Fox are bidding against themselves because they know nobody else can afford what they buy

It is not really just about that either. How taxing would that be on players (it would be impossible to schedule) and how much of an impact do you want a Monday night game to have on the next weekend of games.

You either have Monday night or Thursday night: it is too difficult to have both.

It could be worked out I think. CBA would govern how many 5 day breaks a club can have and the rest comes down to list management

We should be looking at reducing the season to 16 or 18 rounds. Origin and Tests to be played at the end of the season. Stuff the broadcasters and work on drawing more revenue from gate receipts and memberships. Create a longer off-season break before pre-season training starts so players can rest.

Nrl players need five days straight playing on the PlayStation or Nintendo to recover from the previous match

lucky there wasn’t a rlpa when players had full time jobs on top of playing the game

Theres not going to be a reduction in the season by 1/3rd or more. Thats just ludicrous
Is it?

Player welfare will become a bigger issue now that we know the impact of head trauma and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. A shorter season and longer recovery time for players will mitigate the potential side effects of head trauma. It's only a matter if time until this becomes a bigger issue.

Proper List management will accommodate the same thing. No one is going to cop the massive reduction in revenue that goes along with cutting the season by a third. Its just not going to happen.

Broadcasters pay for content, getting rid of 8-9 rounds is the most stupidest idea ever, can you imagine what the AFL would think, they'd be loving it... just plain dumb.... classic grotd

Teams fall to pieces when their spine players are unavailable because there's not enough depth to cover these positions. Look at the Cowboys vs Panthers game from Rd 25 when Penrith rested the bulk of their team, including their entire spine.

Yes,by there own decision. A perfect example of player management which worked for them in the end(sorry @The_Wookie "list' is such an AFL wank word, just like 'flag' that has crept into our great game)

Telling the players and clubs we are reducing your revenue by 30% is never going to fly.

Why not both?

Monday Night Football is very marketable ikf they follow the US lead.

If MNF is very marketable, then the NRL needs to get rid of Thursday nights. You can’t have five nights of football. It becomes oversaturated.

The NRL also shouldn’t manufacture more undesirable timeslots for crowds. There has to be a balance, or a happy medium where you have timeslots that suit the broadcasters and timeslots that could attract larger attendances.

On another point, players IMO need a minimum of a six day turnaround between matches. As time goes by, player welfare is going to become a bigger bigger issue.

I don't like players backing up from Origin two or three days later. Although in recent times, coaches are resting their Origin players and are thinking the long game. Coaches don't want tired, broken down bodies in the finals.

Whatever code you follow, we all take for granted the scheduling of a typical round. But as highlighted in this post, there's more to it than meets the eye.
