I wonder how much of the AFL deal is "in kind" (advertising, special events etc) as they usually include a lot of this in their contracts.
The devil is often in the fine print!

c'mon mate, V'landy's not that bad, he says AFL is for softy abba fans and he played RL as a junior in the gong, clearly best man for the job

Yeah it is all about what he says rather than what he actually does. Those same people haven’t heard the adage that actions speak louder than words

They said at the presser the cash component is "north of $4 billion". So a minimum of $570 million cash pa. We will be getting approx $370mil cash pa in the new deal. Its a huge gap.

Don’t worry mate they are probably paying $200 million in contra 🤨

As I said before, if Gallop or Greenberg did this deal ($200 m less) it would be wall to wall hate.

And I wonder what the AFLW component is, as the NRLW wasn't really a factor in the contract?

It's obvious Vlandy's is ripping the NRL off. Just look at how all News Ltd journo's and the NRL360 crew ripped into Todd Greenberg mercilessly and in unison until he was gone and then look at how much they praise Vlandy's. It's too obvious.

Of course it is. Even when he f***** the game royally with the six again and the subsequent player criticism or when he gave that stupid edict about head highs which ruined Magic Round, it was the fault of the players or the referees. It was never his fault

If you take out contra and telstra as that’s not really media money then you’re still at $550mill a year cash from what we could work out. The nrl deal is worth around $370mill cash a year. That’s $180million A YEAR difference!

the biggest ever gap we’ve had in tv deals was $83million back when Gallop was running the place and the nrl was half owned by the same people buying the rights. That gives you an indication of how monumental a f**k up this is by Vlandys, it’s the first time we’ve sold rights without engaging a specialist media negotiation company. I wonder why?

Pvl is too smart to engage any experts

That hugh marks f**ked PVL hard

Nine pay like $80m a year and get 4 games that do over 3 million viewers

Seven pays $200m+ to AFL a year and gets 1 game like that

“V’landys gets shit done” seemed to be the rolling tagline on here last few years and anyone who disagreed was an AFL troll because he gave those Swannie merkins a sick burn or 2.

Gets things done but not that well evidently.

200m per year difference is enough for there to be an enquiry, but because Fairfax and News Ltd are the benefactors they won't be questioning a thing.
I dont do twitter but if I did I'd be asking the hard questions to Slothfield, Gus, Read, Weirdler etc as to why is the NRL rights now looking so poor, and should PVL take the hit. Then seeing the response

Is it PVL's fault that there is a big gap between AFL and NRL deals? Yes and no.

Yes, he probably should not have negotiated future rights deals during a covid pandemic. He should've just worked on the discounts for the 2020 season.

No, because where was the commission? Wasn't there someone to reign PVL in. When you look at Gill, do you honestly think he did all of the deal on his own?

A number of years ago, Dave Smith completed the FTA deal only. Where was the rest of the deal? Did Gill and the AFL only announced the FTA component today?

What the NRL needs is not a savior where you rely on one single person. The game needs a strong commission, where they all contribute to a media rights deal. Otherwise what is the point of having an independent commission in the first place.

By the time the NRL signs off on the next deal, it could be 2026 or 2027. Don't do it earlier, make Nine and Fox sweat for the first time. And by then, the NRL needs to have people in the commission that know how to do a rights deal.

Time to sack Vlandys and Abdo and refresh the commision. A proper strategic plan for the games growth over next ten years with new larger markets invested in and developed into nrl clubs. If this isnt the big kick up the arse the nrl needs then nothing will ever change anything. Vlandys did the tv deal on his own, the mess we now face sits very squarely on his shoulders.
