I hadn't heard that Cairns was confirmed for Olympic events.

The press release from the council with quotes from ministers

Saying Preliminary Soccer and pre olympic athletics are penciled in because it meets IOC standards.

I know you like to be negative but none of us here have seen the Business cases for all

ExxonMobil sponsors the local comp
There are mining companies that sponsor the Hunters, Why would they not continue to do so?
You keep hiding behind this "business case" malarkey.

If its based on potential sponsorship and political funding, cant you understand its not sustainable, as either of those can be withdrawn at a whim.

My fear with PNG getting a licence will be when a future Federal Government decides to pull its funding of the club. I mean in all seriousness, do we think that politicians of all shades will continue this funding for ever? Hank Head alone will eventually start up saying why is rl a special case for funding a professional sporting club, and others will eventually take up those cudgels too, or other sports will come cap in hand demanding similar funding.

For a PNG team to be successful will require a steady income stream besides funds from the Australian Government and the NRL Annual Grant.
100 million made the storm one of the strongest nrl clubs in fumble land central and no juniors

png will be receiving 250 million in an area where probably one million males could be of age to be juniors

rugby league will basically have infinite players from this after a period of ten years

like the warriors saw kiwi players in the nrl boom

oil search owns the ground

getting corporate sponsors won’t be an issue

we also don’t know how much support will come from the png govt

stage two of the ground upgrade was to be 25k which I don’t think is big enough
???
Racing Vic 2022 revenue $580m
Racing NSW 2022 revenue $380m

PVL is miles behind.
with all the new events created even on that measure nsw will be number one

just be patient

In terms of playing games up north it’s perfectly possible for the png team to use qcb stadium

Barlow park will be their training ground and base

they could play their home games vs broncos and cowboys there instant sellouts

being based in cairns will slow Wayne bennett to be their inaugural coach

The Storm got $100M extra funding on top of the NRL grant.

Where are you getting the figure of $250M from anyway, I haven't seen one piece of opinion or journalism, that says they govt has committed to 10 years of funding @$25M per year. And even if it did, this funding would only match what current NRL clubs operate on now (above the grant).

To think we had leaaders like Greenberg for ten years who were happy being mates with gill the dill telling him there is room for both codes In nsw and qld whilst paying lip service to expansion

no wonder vlandys got rid of him right away
Under Abdo and Vlandys the revenue gap between nrl and afl has grown to the biggest it has ever been. Just saying,

So the IOC has lower standards then?

Where is the 5000 extra seat proposal sitting?
What is your angle here?

Do you think because the some one off pre-Olympic soccer games may be played at Barlow Park in 2032, then it must be magically suitable for an NRL team as of 2025??

Its got a running track around the outside, a tiny grandstand, no corporate facilities, a tiny carpark that holds about 100 cars. Completely unsuitable change rooms and facilities. No media boxes etc. etc.

So Barlow park is good enough to host International Olympic events but not regular NRL games?
Barlow Park does not meet the basics for a NRL game

Its really only a country athletic field

No proper hill, tiny grand stand

Right now yes IF the extra 5k seating gets built then it will be a decent little field

The seating they are referring to would be temporary at best.

And currently the seating is mostly uncovered.

It's not even close to NRL standard

Where did I say it would be suitable in 2025? I have said I don't think PNG is next. If they have Olympic events up there, those facilities will be added

BUT when they do come in having an Australian base with decent facilities is key

Then they don't make Cairns the homebase.

The NRL are in the stage of making money, I am certain if this model jumps Perth as far as preferred option that they have guarantees that the upgrades are permanent.

People saying HBF not up to scratch in Perth, but happy with Barlow Park? It has 1700 seats (will be 6700 for 2032) and an athletics track around it.

PNG/Cairns is amateur hour. Perth has a 20k seater and could strike an agreement with Optus stadium to get 65k rectangular mode for Round 1 and possibly finals. Plus it is not in a dangerous third world country. Tick.
