Ironically, Tasmania would be a more viable option for an NRL team then PNG.
Tbf pretty much anywhere would be. png has no sustainability, zero revenue value to nrl beyond time limited govt funding and a massive host of logistical problems.

Where are you getting the figure of $250M from anyway, I haven't seen one piece of opinion or journalism, that says they govt has committed to 10 years of funding @$25M per year. And even if it did, this funding would only match what current NRL clubs operate on now (above the grant).

Most likely just made up. And 10 years is laughable. Any government funding is really only guaranteed for an election cycle, and even then could be withdrawn at any budget.

Any team that relies on a future LNP govt funding an overseas team is DOA.

Your questioning nrl expanding to png

imagine they tried to put a team in Tasmania which had to be hugely supported by governments
Not sure how the AFL is relevant to this discussion.

I am not worried about the finances of PNG whilst Australia ia paying - the problem will be the actual team.

Seeing you brought up the AFL, Tasmania at least produces enough players for a team (not that that matters given they have a draft), but how are you going to get players to move to PNG? How many PNG boys are currently playing regular first grade? Five? Plus a few in England? They will finish last every season until the Aus government cuts the funding in five to ten years and they fold.

Maybe you should read about where the team will be based these questions have been answered many times

rugby league is the national sport of png

with the right coaching and pathways an nrl team established pathways they will be a gold mine of talent

Make a deed of agreement for admission to the NRL that the PNG government has to guarantee financing for the team for 15 years. How do they do that? Come up with a microscopic mineral resources rent tax. When you spread that tax to generate $25 million a year around all those international companies operating up there it's a tiny fraction of their yearly revenues.

The Australian government then pays the foreign relations aid to PNG. That money is used to fund a new secure stadium and accommodation facility for local players and visiting teams. Any leftovers are used to cover shortfalls in years where the resource tax is reduced if commodity prices downturn.

In time you can end the foreign aid and the club could be 100% funded by multinationals tax.

I also think Cairns is pointless. Play 8 home games in Port Moresby then play 4 home games and 4 away games in Brisbane against teams like the Broncos, Dolphins, Cowboys and Titans. So effectively 8 home games in Port Moresby, 8 games a season in Brisbane. Players can be based in Brisbane rather than Cairns or Port Moresby. Call it something like the Pacific Crocodiles to market it to PNG, Brisbane and Pacific Islanders.

What is your angle here?

Do you think because the some one off pre-Olympic soccer games may be played at Barlow Park in 2032, then it must be magically suitable for an NRL team as of 2025??

Its got a running track around the outside, a tiny grandstand, no corporate facilities, a tiny carpark that holds about 100 cars. Completely unsuitable change rooms and facilities. No media boxes etc. etc.
Don't bother, Sydney people know better than locals.

Cairns seems pointless but the NRL are very much about growth and revenue, I can't see them being based there without it not being the best option
