So why does a PM want it so much?

It feels more like a political play for PNG support against a expanding China, so we dont have another Solomon Is situation
Because whoever controls the Pacific Islands can also control potential air and naval bases. China is building artificial islands because they effectively act as forward position 'unsinkable aircraft carriers'. The US has understood that since WW2, hence why they maintain place like Guam and other atollls etc. And if Australia is encircled by enough of them, in a war scenario you can block of all our shipping, cut off our navy from projecting forces and launch missile attacks on our cities.

Will a rugby league team stop China from doing something stupid like invading Taiwan? No. But it's designed to make PNG reconsider allowing Chinese military access to their ports and airbases.

An NRL team isn't much better than the lecture.

I didn’t realise league unlimited with so many experts on international diplomacy and know better about soft diplomacy than our elected officials

the issue isn’t whether this is good diplomacy or not that’s irrelevant to rugby league

what’s relevant is is this a good thing for rugby league

So if we can get the foreign aid budget to fund a totally token Australian based team that plays the majority of its games in Australia, why don't we just slap a coat of paint on a broke Sydney team, add some token words like Pasifika and get $$

PNG would still be one terrible Ashley Klein decision away from rolling out the welcome mat to China.

I always knew a NRL ref would start WW3

It should be, though and its an excellent way to spread the good word. If the whole world loved rugby league, there would be no war.
Unless China bought out rustys rabbits.... then we'd all have to root for the roosters.... errrrr... i need a shower after that comment

It will still give them their own team to follow, and a potential 8 games in port moresby.. token or not, its a boon for RL to at least try, no way any other code would do something similar

They get a new hospital at a “special interest rate “…

When they can’t pay back the loan , China says “ no problem… just let us park a few warships in a port we will build a few miles up the coast from here and we will call it square …”

Surely we are all in agreement that this is in no way the ARLC idea, like not even in the slightest.

If it wasn't for the Albo brainfart funding idea, the ARLC would sooner expand to Antarctica then PNG.

Let's not pretend it's some huge strategic plan led by RL.

Abdo said they want to be the number 1 sport in the South Pacific. So I think PNG, Pasikifa or NZ 2 are in the ARLC's plans.

Finances are the clear hurdle with all 3. So the Government pledging money is the only reason it is a possible option

A rich businessman would get the attention the same way too

Congrats on proving the point of that tweet.

The arlc is talking to the wa govt about what money they can contribute to a Perth bid

obviously the same people who are questioning govt involvement in png will have the same stance re Perth won’t they

imagine the wa govt was investing 25 million pa in a Perth term
