it’s elite pathways and is focused on a very tiny % of young players.
grassroots is all age age groups of amateur players outside of nrl pathways. The two exist for very different purposes and are very different things.

nrl clubs responsible for elite pathways, LC spend on grassroots and elite pathways to very variable amounts,
arlc responsible and spends on grassroots.

To say it’s ok arlc is spending less on grassroots as nrl clubs are spending more on elite pathways is total nonsense.
So spending more on what produces more nrl players isn’t it ? Lmao

spend more on participants to look good in the annual report

sounds like the nrl way saves a lot of money tbh

Sigh, No-one said spending more on nrl player development is a bad thing, just don’t try and claim it as grassroots funding.

yeh because getting more kids playing rugby leagues only benefit is looking good in the annual report you tool.

Let’s face it we’re going to have to go down the route of gridiron in the US. They are never going to have the most junior participants; the same with Rugby League. Due to the nature of the sport you are never going to have the same amount of participants as soccer or cricket or a few other less dangerous sports

The key is getting the best athletes not the most

That’s it. What Vlandys and abdo are trying to do is get people playing a version of the game and identifying with it and supporting the elite contact product. Participation is rising but it’s a mixture of tag and contact. One club in the shire has over 60 teams and while it’s mainly contact tag options are offered in every age group. That’s the future.

Haha you had to bring up the Sharks mate. But there are clubs like yours doing good jobs.

Why though? The investment is being made on the ones most likely to make it. The NRL spends enough on kids younger than that to capture enough to filter quality into the elite pathways.

Participation is a numbers game rendered meaningless by the afl. Might as well play along. Count all those kiddies!

Of course it is. Certain people go a little over the top about participation numbers. It only tells a part of the story.

The fumblers probably will have more numbers. So will soccer, cricket and netball. Gridiron gets eclipsed in the same way. Nevertheless (and I don’t like the sport I should add) they still get incredible athletes and it is by far the most popular sport over there.

Although we will unlikely ever reach their popularity (per capita of course) we can still aim at doing what they do and just getting the best of the best.
