Between 1998 to early 2012, the NRL was part owned by News Ltd. And when it was doing rights deals in that period, the NRL, part own by News was negotiating with Fox, who were also part owned by News.

So essentially, News Ltd was at both ends of the negotiation table. Fox/ News were getting the NRL rights relatively cheaply.

And when you look at the last three CEO's, Gallop, Smith and Greenberg all departed on the eve on a new broadcast agreement.

So is Abdo next to go in 2025??? , before the next one is signed off?

He’ll probably get the blame for it even though he probably has had very little to do with the negotiations. Although to counter that, he should be, considering he is the CEO.

not likely as Abdo is just a hand puppet and is not leading anything. Those CEOs were actually negotiating and dictating to TV, hence why they were got rid of by the TV companies.

Gallop wanted more from Fox, though I suspect his news ltd ties were the thing that got him shown the door.
Smith did a cracking deal with Nine which Fox didn't like, shown the door
Gallop refused the reduced deal Nine wanted and advised against renegotiating an extension, shown the door

Unfortunately for Abdo, he did oversee it and signed off on the deal, even though, he wasn't the 'main guy' in negotiations.

This is where the commission is in a complete mess. Why has the chairman taken over and has turned it into a 'one man band'? Whilst the CEO and the rest of the commission have become subordinate to him?

Yeah, so where was the rest of the deal?

Yeah, so where was the rest of the deal?
they sacked him before he got chance to play hardball with Fox.
He had got $185mill out of Nine, Telstra were paying $20mill, $20mill from SkyNZ, he only had to get more than $160mill out of Fox and we would have had a better deal.
Only part of the deal I thought he got wrong was allowing Nine to on sell Saturday night back to Fox, there would have been great value in having NRL on FTA on a Saturday night to match AFL coverage.

As I said, What reason is there to punt Abdo or PVL atm?

Expansion is finally happening, NRLW is expanding and becoming professional.

Assuming everything goes as requested by the clubs and RLPA

Then the life of this next TV deal the Salary Cap will go from $10.4m-$12.4m
The Club grant $5 on top of that
There will be $110m put aside for future buying of assets

On the flip side, possibly there could of been a better TV deal but most of the above wouldn't be happening yet.

As it stands now it Gives 5 years to work out the best time to play the NRLW, which will help the TV rights content wise and a bye isn't ideal. So you would think a 9th game is also onto the cards in time for the next deal. That is pushed back a couple of years if this deal was pushed or ended up with a fire sale due to needing to get it done

When you announce a rights deal, it has to be completed like the AFL did, not just do half of it like Smith did, otherwise you run the risk of p***ing off one party, like Fox.
haha you mean like Vlandys announcing the Fox extension deal before sorting the Nine deal? Maybe if he had asked Nine at same time the $500mill they have just offered AFL might have been put on the table??

Fox extension announced May 2020
Nine deal announced Dec 2021

You still haven't answered the question of where this alleged $100mill a year spend to pay clubs and players more is coming from??

'On the flip side, possibly there could of been a better TV deal.'

Hahah understatement of the year!

It has all the relevance in the world. The growth areas is exactly where the junior talent will be over the next 20 plus years.

Take Cam Smith from Logan. At his size he’s a perfect inside mid fielder for AFL. So any kid Cam Smiths size in south west Brisbane within a presence 15km of Lions HQ is gonna get invited to join their junior academy’s and get offered scholarships etc. Sure maybe the kid hates AFL and won’t go, but plenty will.

Look at Issac Heeney for the swans. Has the potential to be a great half or full back in NRL. What position is NRL clubs screaming for more talent? Half back, Hooker and Full back.

That’s where the competition for the future of the game is. And if lions can convince say 2-5 top local talents a year to give AFL a crack because the training ground is 5 mins away - guess what’s gonna make it easier for mum and dad to get the kid to?

Spring Hill? 40km away Dolphins? 70km away Titans? 80km away.

Or do the parents say to the kid “look i know it’s AFL but this is an amazing opportunity, it’s just 10 min drive - come on let’s just see whether ya like it?”

The National football club around the corner that’s always turning up to local schools and giving out free merch and tickets to games and registering kids for Auskick is gonna dominate the broncos dolphins and any QRL club in recruiting kids.

It’s pretty obvious what AFL have been doing for the past 40 years. They don’t even keep their plans secret. They do the due diligence and go after foreign areas. They look for a chink in NRL participation and exploit it to build there game.

So what code do you want the next Cam Smith from south west Brisbane to play? Cause it’s likely in 10-15 years kids that could have killed it as halves in NRL are running around the midfield for the Lions.

If you go with the brisbane Firehawks or Brisbane Jets you have local kids that can easily attend state of the art facilities south of the river etc and undermine the Lions efforts in the region.

The lions aren’t going anywhere either. They have no.1 draft pick locked up this year. A generational talent who should dominate the league for the next 10-15 years. A son of former premiership player. Leaving AFL a pocket of Brisbane to exploit for its own gains is gonna comeback to haunt NRL for the junior talent (especially halves) the AFL will successful poach from NRL in juniors.
This is a load of tosh

there was a recent survey about afl participation in western Sydney and it ranked last

they’ve thrown hundreds of millions at it but surprise surprise kids in nsw and qld would prefer to play rugby league

Interestingly there are as many RL clubs in WA as there are AFL clubs in Western Sydney (26). And we don't have tens of millions $'s spent (we get around $750k and have 5 staff lol) a year or a professional club spear heading things.
Shows what potential RL has to grow if it got its sht together!

I love that AFL fans are still perpetuating the myth that their players would excel at other sports.

There’s a reason no other code in Australia has ever been interested in their players. They are inferior athletes that aren’t capable of handling the physicality of Rugby League.
Rugby league has had players play every major football code around the world except soccer

billy slater won that competition easily against star athletes from other codes

afl players would struggle with the physicality and speed of rugby league

they are better suited to be those tall sticks union puts in lineouts

Who represented AFL v Slater?
Do you mean Australia’s greatest athlete where they did things like Jet Ski and Dune Buggy racing? Yep, that would certainly be definitive.

Brett Deledio who was apparently an all round amazing athlete. Then a carrot top lookalike who turned out to be an even worse athlete and came like 7th out of 10.

There was an individual challenge for each sport and a few of them suited the AFL players and they still failed miserably.

The show put a myth to the AFL producing amazing athletes.

Did they fumble their way through it all 🤣. If they had tests about who could fumble the most they would win that

The way their media overrates their abilities and covers up all indiscretions by current players is pretty amazing.

Yet our supposed media partners - Nein in particular - talk down our game at every opportunity (Phil Gould, Paul Gallen and Andrew Johns are very good at it)
