Is Sydney North Shore really the most pressing concern for Rugby League in Australia?

Could we get any more insular in our vision for the game?
What concerns me about all of this talk on the Bears is it focuses on what's best for Sydney without taking Perth into consideration. If we want Perth to rally behind a team then we need to give them one that's specifically for them and not people from Sydney.

Fans are shareholders of the game, investing their time and money in it every time they buy a ticket to attend a match. They need to feel like they're getting something out of their investment and aren't being taken for a ride.

The media is really f**king up potential expansion into Perth by only focusing on Sydney.

I reckon people outside of Sydney will eventually lose interest in the game because they'll get sick of being treated like second-class citizens. They'll watch their team when it's winning, but they'll no longer invest as much time and money in it and their passion for it will wane.

Surely he must have meant college talent that haven’t been picked up at all by the NFL?

If he meant that then ok sure there is some potential there but even then it is a lot easier and more cost effective to fund/acquire talent in Australia and the Pacific Islands.
they they would have to invest massively to have rugby league programs in usa then pay these college players not picked up by nfl and other comps. You might get the odd receiver, corner back or running back that can transition to wing or centre but tbh that’s not where depth issue is. good luck finding half backs or full backs in American football systems. There’s a reason it’s not happening already after 100 years.

Not confirmed yet. Being independently audited still but given there is a revenue share with the players, lying from the NRL makes no sense.

As to your original question, No one knows
Take the $643m AFL announced
That includes Telstra money for the website and upgrades to Marvel Stadium
As well other non cash contra - You can't pay players with that. So cash is what matters

All NRL say is over $400m cash - how much over is the unknown, Nor is what the extra contra is known
BS
afl has announced cash is “over” $550mill
nrl total deal is $402mill which around $370 is cash

nice spin though, you sound like pistol Pete!

Umm I don't see anyone having a problem with the revenue number. If they don't have a good forecast for revenue right now, that's a problem.

Bragging about a $50m profit at this stage is incredibly dumb

On its own maybe, The past 2 season $40m profit has been cleared.

$570m revenue $42.8m this current year
Quoted as $600m plus turnover. Hit $50m profit -

No exact figures though so that leaves some room for error but when players are after their 45% hit, There needs to be some sort prediction

550 v 370 cold hard cash
I guess if they keep spending less on grass roots then sure a surplus looks great.

NRL says $400m cash, I believe them and you still have yet to provide a link for how much the wifi updates are.

Hence you can't answer the original question without such information

Pretty rude to necro a two week old post, argue about it, declare the discussion over only to then start up a new one with me mate.

I reckon it would be decent of you not to dip out of the last discussion if you want to keep this up.
The last conversation was going around in circles and the posts were hitting the 10k word limit. We both stated our opinions. There's nothing more to say. It was clogging up the thread.

I don't disagree that rationalisation will leave a sour taste in people's mouth and lead to some walking away from the game, but some times it is a necessity.

Losing 10k fans in Sydney but gaining 10k in Perth is actually a win for the game because the latter will give us exposure in Australia's fourth largest market. That will appeal to potential sponsors and make our broadcast and sponsorship deals more lucrative.

Look at the impact the Storm have had on broadcast deals to see their introduction added riches to the game that the Steelers, Bears, Magpies and Tigers could not.

Be interesting to see how this years $60mill surplus has been realised.
last years $42mill surplus was largey due to $25mill grassroots funding reduction and a second origin revenue in same financial year. Countering that was a covid spend of $28mill they won’t have this year. But they will have an increased payment to players based on last years surplus.

also interesting to see where the revenue growth has come from. Next tv deal doesn’t start till next year. Bumper origin and finals crowds and WA origin payment will see a decent return.

$600mill revenue and $60mill surplus is very impressive as long as grass roots funding has been put back to pre covid levels, and more.

Since 1982 we have lost

Newtown
Balmain
Wests - Played at Lidcombe
Bears
Lost Souths
The general vibe around RL was low in mid-Late 90's

As a result Swans ( AFL ) took advantage
RU around that time was very strong too.

Swans kept it, RU didn't and areas who kept a team are on the up still
Why is Cronulla a basketcase?

Only $4m in sponsorship in 2021 and $2.7m in 2020. In 2019 they lost money. Had to sell land to a developer and then forfeited their stake in it for $39m to pay off debts and rebuild their Leagues Club. See their 2021, 2020 and 2019 annual reports.

There's no AwFuL club in Southern Sydney and no NRL club was lost from the area. I don't hear anyone talk about the Swans having a massive following in Southern Sydney.

So what's your excuse for Cronulla having few fans and little interest from the corporate sector?

There's plenty of bidders from Perth willing to invest in a Perth-based team.

Maybe Cronulla's licence should be given to them?

So playing 2 games at their spiritual home and 10
In Perth makes them a Sydney team lol.

fact is no nrl leader has talked about a Perth team in almost 30 years

vlandys is just about to not just talk about he’s going to do it

so i don’t get the nitpicking tbh
He actually avoided the subject and told the Perth bidders/WA Gov to talk with the bloody Bears.

And the profit was achieved with the following expenses afl didn’t have

1. Clubs provided with record funding during and post covid whilst afl clubs are on reduced allocations

2. Players given bonus payments as profit targets exceeded and another bonus payment of approx 40 million to cover reductions during covid. Afl players will receive none of their lost income

3. Beginning to invest in property assets whilst the afl borrows against the one they were given to cover the losses from covid

4. In the past financial year 30 million covid expenses to relocate to Brisbane which afl didn’t have

Lol the deal is $643mill, $550mill cash is $93mill other, wifi and all.

you are getting closer to being able to answer @bad boy bubby 's question on if Foxtel are getting ripped off. Wifi isn't from Foxtel so was a balant lie from yourself but it comes with the Territory

As for the $550m cash here says different

approximately $550 million in cash and contra per year under the new arrangement

$570m and $42.8m is 2021 FY. Unless the 600m is 2022, there are no 2022 figures quoted.

Bragging about making the biggest profit ever in 12 months is not relevant to what the players are making. They care about the top line figure, and like I said, if they don't know that already it's a problem.

Going to the media and saying, we are going to make a profit of $50m in a financial year that hasn't even started is dumb. Bragging about how it will be a record is even dumber. You guys using a made up number to claim he is the messiah is even dumber still.

Looking at the profit figure itself is somewhat misleading.

Need to go the cash flow statement and review the reconciliation to profit.

The NRL financial statements for 2021 don't include the complete note.

Profit is easily manipulated so the cash flow statement is essential to determine real performance.

For 2020 and 2021 the NRL had a net decrease in cash of $4m (34m down in 2020 and 30m up in for 2021)

The AFL has $108m increase (being 39m in 2020 and 69m in 2021). They reported a loss for 2020 and 2021. They likely played a bunch of third parties to get concessions by telling them how big a loss they had while raking in the cash.
