Touché although I’m pretty sure media deals are done on the back of viewership numbers and not crowd figures
He didn’t mention PVL or NRL. Disappointing , as a war of words with PVL would be fun.

Also the AFL clubs (except GWS/GC) actually make more money from crowds than broadcast revenue. That is their key metric. It is all about stadium deals for them. Different model to NRL so hard to compare.

What stadium deals do the likes of The Kangaroos or St Kilda have ? I’m a little dubious… both these teams get massive hand outs from the AFL every year on top of the salary cap … there wouldn’t be a need for that if they were living off their crowds

Big tangent here: those little plaques on the premiership trophy look tacky now that there are so many.

Like someone has stuck those little stickers you get on apples all over it.

You're happy to pay more for the same service?

"Let's grow the game... By increasing the cost barrier to enjoy it".

hey …I hope the price never goes up….doesnt seem to be happening with anything else though …. Maybe the clubs and players might take less money though I guess …

Well I guess the concern is that you may have to pay for foxtel plus a streaming service or two, rather than replace it

The AFL receive just under half their revenue from broadcasters.
St Kilda and Kangaroos receive $22m - $25m from the AFL, so about $11m from brodcasters. They both make more than that from membership and match day.

By way of comparison, Hawthorn which is a middle sized club, make $25m from membership and match day, and receive around $13m from the AFL (so about $6m from media rights).

Similarly, the NRL makes less than half their revenue from broadcasters.

There is a good chance that broadcast revenue will decline in future years. Clubs need to find ways to increase revenue direct from fans.

Afl gives them cheap rent at marvel stadium so the asset then doesn’t generate great returns

Taking st kilda 43 percent of their total revenue comes from the afl via a tv grant

Compared to a small nrl club like the sharks 40 percent of their revenue comes from the nrl via tv grant

For a big nrl club like the broncos it’s under 25 percent

Many afl clubs are reliant on supplementary grants which the stronger clubs don’t receive and without which the clubs would go broke

If the afl adopted the nrl system of all clubs receiving the same grant then their league would consist of 12 clubs

All their clubs in nsw and qld plus some Melbourne clubs

St Kilda in 2024 had $59mill revenue of which $21.3mill was grant money from AFL. ie 36% of revenue.
Cronulla total revenue (inc pokies) $43.3mill NRl grant $21.7mill ie 50.1%,.
If you take out the LC revenue the ratio for FC generated revenue becomes near 55%. A number of clubs still havent fully leveraged fan spend.

That is the concern

Ch9 and other FTA are pushing for exclusive games. Get an extra on FTA 9 games should have atleast 4 FTA a week.

Hopefully that brings an increase without having to add a 2nd pay service
