Its not that the basic concept of magic round isnt there in that it brings all teams to one city (two in the AFLs case) - but thats where it ends, the differences have always been in the execution.

Games are played in three different venues, not one - Adelaide Oval will host 5 matches out of 9, and including a rural venue (this year in the Barossa, about an hour out of the city). AFL members get free entry to their clubs matches.

That's quite a take 😂😂😂 It's Temu Magic Round

No its just different. That the basic concept of bringing all teams together in one place for a round is definitely driven by Magic Round, the AFLs Gather Round is not really the same thing.

If the AFL find a way to play a competitive game in the USA he’ll say it’s got nothing to do with NRL Vegas. lol

Hell I didnt even really say that about Magic Round, but you be you mate.

We all know it’s not exactly the same format but the concept was obviously copied from nrl. And also there seems to be a lot of afl fans that wish it more closely resembled the nrl format with a ticket granting you access to a full day of games at the one stadium.

Thsts what makes magic round ‘magic’ - it’s a smorgasbord of rugby league. The afl one is the temu version because it’s just scheduling a bunch of games in SA

Marvel is there to host events and make profits. AFL hosted last year would be happy to host again. The AFL likes money.

Yes, but as the NRL/Storm are making an attempt at cashing in while the AFL teams are away I wouldn’t be expecting the AFL to be overly accommodating, nor would I expect the NRL to offer a great deal if the roles were reversed.

I’m sure the AFL aren’t overly worried about the Storm & NRL in Melbourne but I’m sure they won’t want them to grow too much and start overtaking their smaller Melbourne clubs. Sure that is a long way off still but Storm crowds are growing at a fairly quick rate, even without a 40k+ crowd at Marvel or MCG to boost it further.

i don’t think the Storm are a long ways off overtaking North Melbourne, could argue that they already have.

Allegedly they are getting paid $15-20mill plus some spend for the game in SA. Why do AFL always take our ideas and make more money from them?

With 9 games at 3 hours each they’d have to be playing at some whacky times to make it all fit. NRL is in a good position in that regard, even if/when it gets to 10 games they could still fit it in without overlaps and having to use a different stadium.

They're not on current numbers, around 3-4k avg, but Nth Melbourne have got a lot more than that in the past.
Bit more work and better pricing and Storm could overtake them for sure, as long as they dont get good!

Yes in crowds I reckon they’ll get there soon, but in terms of general support and revenue etc perhaps Storm have already overtaken

Hard to say.
in terms of general support Storm have around 30k members Nth Melbourne 50k. Id say Storm have a more national fanbase.
Revenue wise. Nth Melbourne revenue in 2024 was $53mill, Storm dont produce accounts but unlikely it wasnt up that high. The Nth Melbournes revenue was aided by a grant of $25.4mill where as Storms NRL grant was nearer $19mill.

Who copied it from Superleague.

There are a lot of those people. Im not saying the AFLs version is better. That said for people actually coming here, Im not hearing a lot of complaints.

The AFL and SA Government dont seem to mind though. And the fans keep coming.
BY all accounts and metrics both variants of Magic/Gather Round work.

General support in Melbourne all AFL clubs would still be twice as big as Storm. I.e. for a Preliminary Final even NM would draw 70k+ V a non Vic club. They won’t pass NM in crowds, especially playing in a 29k stadium. NM revenue last year was $15m more than Storm.

Yeah, AFL fans turn up and they do travel. It is a huge advantage they have over NRL.
Would you say AFL fans have less complaints about the product on the field than RL fans? Like, is AFL seen as more the same game as it was in the 80s than RL is? Or has it also become too structured? I reckon almost every RL fan would agree they would like less structure and a lot more "heads-up" football in RL - like the 80s and 90s.
