West Coast Eagles don't have a leagues clubs or pokies and are one of the most profitable sports clubs in Australia. It can be done other ways but means clubs actually having to work for it rather than get handouts from social misery.

Don't compare apples with oranges.

No other Club has pokies in WA either.... apart from the casino.

My local club subsidises entertainment to the tune of millions of dollars a year, there's a band venue for you.

OK that's one. Got to admit that in the 80's and 90's virtually every pub was a band venue. All good things come to an end I know.
Care to tell me what your local club is.
cheers

They also have 40,000 season ticket holders, that's a bit of a rough comparisom.

perhaps the federal govt could give an incentive to clubs/orginizations that go without pokies? give them a tax break perhaps??
Are you saying that those clubs that subsidise food, entertainment and junior sport should be punished? Because those subsidies come from poker machine revenue.

Yes, it is Mounties but most of the clubs around here do it (subsidise entertainment). Don't they in your area?
Many of the shows are free, others are $5. I know the bands are paid a lot more than that. On Saturday night at Mounties you can find three different bands playing somewhere in the club.

And why did they stop being band venues? Because they found something else to do with the space where the bands used to play... something that involved a bunch of glassy eyed zombies feeding coins into slots....

Band venues would still exist if local music was good.

It,s not, today's music is bland, that is why kids spend more money on computer games than recorded music.

Pub owners will provide music venues if music appealed to more than a handful of emo or altena-wank losers.

Emo or altena wank losers? You've lost me there. Anyway if that's the same as baby boomer then I'm guilty as charged and I will be heading to Mounties next Saturdy week to see Creedence Clearwater Recycled for $4 and I can promise you it will not be bland. Or how about the Wolverines tomorrow night.

Utter bullsh*t.

The Sydney live music scene is dead for two reasons:

1) Pokies
2) Noise restrictions

Pubs are too lazy to have bands when they can put in a couple of pokies and earn a sh*tload for no effort.

That's why Melbourne's live music scene has it all over ours. No pokies.

there we no noise restrictions at places like the Annandale hotel, which was a well known band venue.

The reason why they went to pikies is because REALLY lame bands like Something for kate and Pollyanna would be playing there every second week, and that only appealed to about 30 people in a city of 4 million.

If there were bands today that could pack 500 people in every night, that'd make more money than highly taxed pokie.

But there are too many lame bands today... not enough kids get inspired by them, that is why they elect to spend money on computer games, it is more entertaining.

There's pokies in Melbourne pubs dude.
