When do we drop Phil Hughes from the test side

Hughes just doesn't have the technique for test match cricket. He lacks shot all around the wicket and gets worse and worse because the opposition teams have all worked out how to expose his limitations.

There is a massive step up from shield cricket to Test cricket. Lehmann, Bevan, North etc all struggled to perform at test level but had remarkable first class records. It takes special talent (Michael Clarke being a good example) to perform at the top level consistantly. Hughes doesn't possess that talent unfortunately.

Time to give someone else a go. We need a solid number 3 badly. Hughes is the furthest thing from the answer that we can get.

I don't buy the argument that you need a good technique to be a good test player.

Katich had one of the most bizarre techniques I've ever seen and he was brilliant.

I maintain Hughes will carve up England. He's in a poor run of two tests - what's Watson done that's so special in that time?

he does look pretty bad though, not only does he keep getting out, he doesn't seem to be able to score when he is at the crease

The last 5 test matches. (watson has only played in 4 of them) (It also includes the current game so Cowan, Watson, Clarke & Wades statistics will change)

Phil Hughes 258 @ 28.667 (2 x 50's)
Shane Watson 195 @ 32.5 (1 x 50)
Ed Cowan 227 @ 28.375 (1 x 50)
David Warner 386 @ 42.889 (5 x 50's)
Michael Clarke 568 @ 81.143 (4 x 50's, 2 x 100's)
Matthew Wade 273 @ 45.5 (2 x 50's, 1 x 100)

I think when you're in form technique isnt everything. When in form the runs tend to flow regardless.

When not in form is when technique is more important, because you can fall back on a good technique to grind out runs. Hughes on the other hand has such limited scoring range at present, he's getting completely bogged down before playing a rash shot and getting out.

If Warner pads that ball away, we don't end up having this conversation. I'm more upset with him than I am Hughes.

Unless he scores big in the 2nd innings there's no way he will play the 4th test. Khawaja will surely come in after his suspension.

Daryll Cullinan against Warnie. Agit Agarkar against Australia. Chris Martin against anything or anyone.

All Bradman-esque compared to HAH.

The most inept batting I've ever seen from a top order player.

Deserved his recall in to the team, but its more than clear now that half-decent sides are easily able to figure him out quickly and render him useless.

Cant have that from a Test batsman.

Big Ashes runs for Snooze or its all over for good.

He seems a shockingly bad, technical player. First it was the short ball, now he can't play the spinning ball. Ordinary test bat. Good ODI bat though.

you have to wonder where his runs are gonna come from, he struggles to occcupy the crease but doesn't look like scoring runs while he is there

if he batted as long as Cowan he'd only be about 10 runs

I would go as far to say that he's the worst frontline batsmen that I've ever seen against spin bowling.

Looks like he's going to be one of those guys that has a very good domstic record, but not likely to succeed at test level because of technical issues, and quality bowling being able to sort him out

he is proof that our spin bowling stocks at first class level are shit, if they were any good his first class record would be no where near as good as it is

I'd say his domestic record will be on the decline now too. Even part time no hopers like Jadeja can stop him from scoring and get him out. Plenty of those in domestic teams. People around the bat. No short or wide stuff. Spin at both ends. Goodbye the hopeless one.

Not surprising when you see our apparent 2nd and 3rd best spinners are called Doherty and Maxwell.
