I miss Chippy. One of the only true Rugby League journalists. Yes he sometimes was a pain in the ass (all journalists are) but you could see his love for the game in his articles

Chippy used to stick up for RL against other sports.

Sadly, this rarely happens these days.

Jimmy Smith sticks up for the code which is refreshing.

You can't sack the media, true. But like organisations professionally run such as the NFL, you CAN (pre-season) stipulate guidelines to journalists covering the game as to what is and won't be tolerated during the season. Do you think the NFL would allow journos contracted to them to rubbish the sport the way not only Rothfield, but other people like Rabs and Gus in commentary (e.g. their negativity towards international RL) do? Or what about when Raaaaaaaay stopped calling a game on radio during the 2nd half because it was "too boring", about 10 years ago or so?

I just laugh at last year when that useless C-C origin match got a crap crowd in Coffs Harbour, and Raaaaaaaay called the radio station to rubbish the crap out of Dave Smith et al. (to the level of personally attacking him). Now, if Gallop had the power and influence to remove Gus from air for a few weeks in 2008 regarding that on-air barrage one Monday night after the SBW walkout of the Bulldogs, surely Dave Smith had enough balls to really give the ultimatum to Ch9 stating they wouldn't allow them to let Raaaaaay call games if he continued doing what he did. The NRL missed many opportunities doing things like that, not just with Raaaaaaay, but most of the folk from the Telegraph.

And I agree with Oikee regarding Paul Kent's comments. It is dangerous territory

Thanks. Someone said they cant sack these fools. I disagree. Paul Kent is not needed on 360" with Ben Ikin.
Sack him, tell him to promote the code and not rubbish the internationals and rep games or get out, for good.
If the NRL cant do that then the game is lost, because the media will just run the game into the ground, who is paying them. ??

Look, Kent has damaged the code. He lost a audience for the game, helped lose a audience.
Buzz, well he just needs to be let go. Find another outlet like Social media and bag the hell out of the old wrinkled one.

AFL rejected their inter-state clashes, and have no internationals.

If we keep moving down the path we are headed, then our code will end up a local code as well.
We are not far off that now. Origin is the only thing that really peaks most interest.

I will finish up my report and post it over the weekend. With these muppets putting the code down lights a whole new picture to why the game is and has struggled.
It starts and ends with media biase and bad commentators who really should be pasteurized, put out to pasture.
Sports worldwide thrive on the game, the skill of the players, and the good commentating that goes with that.
Rugby league has the best skills, and highlights equal to any code, yet we fail to capitalise on this, and Rabs and Gould need pasteurized as well.

They dont excite the masses like other callers from other codes can and do.
NRL needs a cleanout.
And we need to sell the skills and action of the game better.
We are so far behind other codes when it comes to selling our product.

We need change, like others need change and make change. Then they profit.
Our code is caught in some sort of dark age and cant progress.
I think it all align's around channel 9 and the hangeroner dinosaurs.

I point blank refuse to click on any article from Rothfield. I have better things to do with my time than read the dribble written by this oxygen thief.

Well done Nerd. I cant believe he has a following and you wonder what he has over the code "for them the nrl" to allow him to get away with rubbishing the code every week.
Rugby league must have some deep dark closets with fresh skeletons.
I mean Hadley over Voss. ?
The game nearly missed out on having a great call on the Inglis try the other night because we had no decent caller.
Now other codes would be selling that for all it is worth. Not rugby league, we might see it in a highlight package somewhere, in a years time. ?

We really need the yanks to do this game justice i think.
They can sell ice to eskimo's. We cant sell sugar to ants.

The weird homoerotic relationship he has with the Mole via Facetime on iPhone is very very odd. Seriously check his twitter pics. So many photos of the Mole without a shirt and Buzz grinning at the sight whilst laying in bed. Far from a professional writer.

I actually agree with most of your inane ramblings in this thread, but just want to pick you up on this. I doubt the NRL have anything to do with a show produced by Foxsports? That's equivalent to asking them to sack some due of Home and Away.

Well done Nerd.

 Totally misread your post upon first view, I didn't realise that was the guys username and thought you were hanging shit on him by calling him a NERD!!!

Compare it with the Melbourne media's treatment of AFL and you can see that things could be a hell of a lot more respectable and better for both parties.

God knows I hate AFL, but I'm envious of how supportive of the game the media is down here.

Not just supportive, but protective of it. The Melb media are regularly sweeping crap under the carpet for one AFL club or another or the league itself. The fact there wasn't a bigger blow up about the back room deals regarding Essendon and Hird astounds me.

The tards in Noisecorp up here make shit up about our code just to sell a rag.

Chook.

Kent is goose and to be on NRL360 week in week out and rubbish the game he is being paid to promote and review is beyond belief? He needs to pull his head in or go and look at another outlet, seems like a conflict if he is paid by Foxsports who paid NRL to TV rights so they should have vested interest to get bang for buck, not one of their staff bagging the money man being theNRL!!

Will said, Ch9 has worst selection of callers either past it too old, with Nrl rant about rules, refs or ex-players who can't speak or can't add any insight to the game.

You turds criticising Kent are unbelievable. He is one guy who speaks the truth and is trying to strengthen and protect the game. Would be a great league administrator.

About the Samoa - Fiji test, he is right. Unless you are of islander blood who the f**k cares about or wants to watch a B-grade game featuring mostly B-grade players? Like he said, it would be a super game before Aust v NZ.

Pull your heads in and stop twisting things out of context to suit.

strengthen and protect the game by pissing on the international game? what are you on?

I can't wait for Samoa v Fiji. these games are always full of passion and attacking football. why have it as a pre game event when it will pull a crowd better then NRL games?

So f**k international League in other words, pretty short sighted if you ask me. There is a massive PI population in Sydney.

That sort of thinking isn't acceptable for a LU administrator let alone a League one.

You are deluded. Kent is a gifted writer but only has himself in his thoughts.

Wow! How ridiculously short sighted. His (and your) attitude does nothing to strengthen and protect the game, it inhibits it! If our administrators had that attitude we would never grow as a sport. The game deserves every minute of its own billing, playing it before aus v nz just defeats the purpose.

As another poster said, there is a large PI population in Sydney that is getting behind the event but their is a bigger point that a lot of people are forgetting. This game is getting big press in Fiji and Samoa itself, far more important for growing our sport. We should be aiming to have rugby league as the major sport in the pacific islands! Why any rugby league fan wouldn't want the sport to grow ill never know, but it seems like there are a few of you out there!

Go Fiji.

Paul Merkin, you don't speak for me, as an Aussie, I've been looking forward to this game since last years game between Samoa and Tonga. Yet, the same game you merkins buried last year you're rubbishing this year, yet after last years game, you merkins were all full of praise saying we need more.

Would you idiots in the papers make up your minds?

Spot on Shanghai. The fact that most here disagree is further confirmation as to the accuracy of your post.

Kent is the best journo ever. He speaks with honesty when asked his opinion, without fear or favour (if you can excuse the cliche.)

Might I re-iterate OPINION for the dunderheads who think (as posted!) that his job is to promote rugby league. It is not. His job is to give his opinion on league matters. He absolutely loves the game, and his point (as you alluded to) was regarding scheduling.

As any human being worth his salt that is unjustly accused, he did not just accept it, he fought back. Kudos to him. I am a Manly fan, yet I was embarrrassed by Jorge's tweet, and applaud Kent's response.

Oh and can I point out one of the greatest ironies I have ever witnessed. Journos here are lambasted for writing articles that are negative to rugby league. Might I suggest that it is their love for the game, and concern for it, that causes them to draw attention to such matters in the hope of raising awareness and working towards fixing the problems. Exactly the same that every article written here by posters is a whinge!!!! How many positive threads are created?

I have no doubt that Brutus, for example, is a highly passionate rugby league fan. If as much as 5% of his posts are not negative, I'll eat Johnny Raper's apparrell in the Kangaroo tour (ie his hat.)
