Plane Crashes Into World Trade Centre

220 posts later. Just took the time to take a read through all the contributions on this thread and it has been one amazing thread....
I haven't had much time to think about all the events that have occured in the last 2 and a 1/2 days. I was basically tied up with work all Wednesday and Thursday, and today has been the first time that i have been able to take a close look at what has happened. I to, like alot of others in here, stayed up on Tuesday night to watch these events. I was totally shocked, to be honest, it looked like a scene out of a movie.
Taking this from a Christian view, my first prayers went out to all the victims. All those who are affected by this tragedy. These innocent people had their lives taken away from them and became pawns in a war that has lasted for many a decade.
In all honesty, i can't believe that some are advocating huge retaliation strikes. Im more then happy to tell you where im coming from, yes, i firmly believe that 2 wrongs NEVER MAKE A RIGHT. In committing the same acts as these terrorists have (ie: Killing innocents) they become as bad as them. The fight is not with everyone. The fight should be with ALL those involved in the committing/planning of criminal acts, namely terrorism.
To those who think i am going soft, let me ask you this. What has war done for the world in the last 4000 years??
Have any major world problems been totally solved? No
Do religious conflicts still dominate many countries? Yes
How many soldiers have died in wars? Millions
How many civilians have died in wars? Millions and Millions
Is war the solution? No
Come on, we need to learn from history. War leaves many without their lives, many more without a reason to live. Have we really learnt our lessons from the wars of the 20th century? If a war is the result of these attacks, then unfortunately, the answer is no.

legend,

Hi mate. Here a great site which lists very up-to-date facts and figures on all countries of the world. It's listings in some fields is very informative, and I think you might find what you're looking for.

It's what I refer to very often and something all interested should most definately book-mark.

A group of muslim(?) students at Qld University of Technology were stopped from cheering and clapping on Wednesday by security, while students were crammed into one of the lunch areas watching it on tv.

Interesting, if not anything else - to the do-gooders on here, that is.

I hesitate if they were/are muslim, in that they were all wearing that common garb.

Thanks for the info RB and it is very interesting to read about Afghanistan. They are the worlds most prolific trafficker of opium and it states the ruling parties control the flow. Another shocking situation with a very poor country using drug money to arm itself and fund terrorism instead of trying to stop the civil wars that rage within their borders. Judging by their landscape and location it would be very hard for the U.S to get a groundforce moblised. Apart from air attacks they look invulnerable to attack from outside. The geographical qualities work in their favour with no coastline and an arid climate and mountainous terrain. This is all an assumption of course that they are still providing refuge for that scumbag and he is guilty of these acts.

Mud and Blood, its not a case of do gooders here. Its a case of remaining level headed, thinking rationally and more important, acting rationally. Imagine this picture, the americans bomb the tripe out of Afghanistan. How many innocent people do you think would die if this happened?
Im not saying sit on your hands and do nothing. Lets just keep things in perspective, weed out all the terrorists, weed out all the people associated with the terrorists and weed out all the people who support the terrorists. Bombing everything to pieces is not the way to go about business...
Im not really making these comments directly at you Mud and Blood, its more a general comment. What happens in the next few days will define what sort of world we live in into the future. Lets hope whatever happens involve rational thinking. This is where im worried at having George Bush in gov't....
The footy game? Im worried about it on Sunday, i really am. This could turn into anything, im really hestiant to even think about what could happen. Thankfully, only a small percentage of Bulldog fans share this 'fanatical attitude'....

Given that the resources of the USA intelligence are busily hunting the culprits of this horrendous massacre,I find it a lot scary that their eagerness for revenge could lead the planet to a nuke out.
However, their desire to punish, may also lead to conclusions from available evidence that they interpret for their own purposes, rather than what the evidence actually points to.
Whilst it is possible that the guilty party could be bin Laden, the Americans have yet to identify why it occurred. They say anti -western feeling, but to me some of the things they say are more for the media than reality. For starters this was initially described as a "high concept, low tech" act of terrorism. Then they say it would have taken years to co-ordinate,much less avoid detection.
I think the motive for the attack is the first thing that needs to be accurately defined prior to any retributation.
In fact to say that I have some suspicions about who may actually be to blame would be to put it mildly.Middle Eastern anti American hostility may be the answer, but not the only canditate in my mind.
Are there any other countries/organisations that stand to benefit from this act of terrorism?
Is this really a religious based assault?
Is it paygack for American policies?
Is it an attack on capitalism?(That was my first thought watching it).It is the WORLD Trade Centre, but I will admit to jumbled thoughts, watching the 2nd plane plough into the building.
Also the truth is I don't really know the answer as to the motive, but can only speculate, however I am sure that media will try to make sure that we all come up with the "right" answer.

MFC.......As is the case with 99% of your posts, a bell balanced and thought out posting. However, I just can't help thinking that sanity will prevail at the footy this weekend. The people you mentioned have been vilified in the media all year and this is hardly the time for them to re-emerge. If they do anything, I have no doubt that there will be enough rednecks at the game dealing with them which I realise will inflame this volatite situation. I also hope the rednecks don't provoke that group you are refering to.

PLEASE! Anyone going to the footy this weekend, remember, it is Rugby League you are watching. Bag the other team the way you normally would, but leave politics out of the Sydney Football Stadium. Rugby League fans should set an example of tolerance to the rest of Australia and hopefully the rest of the world. Ignorance will not help anyone.

Well as many of you know the US airlines have recommenced operations today. It has just been broadcast that 2 more groups of 3 have been arrested trying to board planes in New York using fake Delta pilot & flight attendant id's.

Unbeleiveable. Congress is about to issue the govt with U.S $40 billion to aid a military campaign. The govt originally asked for $20 billion. It has also been reported that Northwest has suspended it flights due to outside info on possible hijackings as well. No wonder no group has taken responsibility yet, it's not over with by a longshot from the sounds of it. Bush is applying the pressure to Pakistan to co-operate which means they will launch their campaign from Pakistan.

mud, ozbash, I was just watching the BBC and they had a special report on what is happening in Britain. They had to warn certain ethnic people there to stop publicly celebrating it as it was causing ratial tensions. It is not onlythe palestinianswho are clebrating but groups of people in western worlds.

When discussing rednecks one should also consider why we have rednecks.Trying to justify actions of terroristsgoes a long way towardsproducingrednecks.

You say $40 Billion is to be spent on a military campaign?
Bloody Hell, thats got to be bigger than both world wars combined.

Surely, that much money would go a great distance in ending Third World debt and would probably bring an end to terrorism.

I put the story up but it made the page too large. I'll see if I can condense it a little.

I got that info from CNN Willow and that is a hell of a lot of money. That was only the first instalment too. There will be more to come if and when they need it.

Add all those countries up and you probably wont even get to halfway of what the U.S are planning to spend. As sad as it is, a war is the best cure for an ailing economy.

Organisations around the world are screaming for funds to help those who can't help themselves. The $40 BILLION has been pulled outof a hat in the name of revenge.

Why is so hard to get money for hospitals, schools etc and yetit is so easy to get vast amounts of money for the purpose of killing?

I can't work it out.

Willow: It is an amazing amount of money. But do you really think if the US just gave a bunch of money to these countries it would a) end their poverty and b) end the terrorism?
