Players let go by other clubs.

Sele was not bad at all when he played NRL at Saints. He may not have impressed first season but pretty sure he is not the only one not to have a stand out season in his new club. Fanou-Blake is only being talked up this season so he took time. Sele was talked up by Fittler as well as Gould so they must see something in him. Looking back, he would have had much more impact that Lats and Allgood have if given a chance.

I don't see the value of bringing a player on like Mary did with Lats just to give the good players a rest. Why does the team have to have a period in the game where the forwards just try and maintain the defence? You should be bringing on impact players not guys that you know will be solid and do the basics right until your impact forwards come on. Geez I am glad he is gone but I am sure there will be another wasted player in the starting side next season like we have had to endure like e.g McCrone, Lats etc. Actually it will be Lafai.

If we are looking at players being let go by other clubs then let's put some KPI's around it
  1. Already proven at 1st grade level
  2. Is a specialist in 1 position and that is a position we are short in
  3. Not older than 25
  4. No lingering injuries
  5. Not a journeymen
  6. Not a problem child
  7. Not going to seek a release for family reasons 1 year in
If they don't tick all those boxes then little point in having them IMO.

All good points and ideas.
But whose available on the market and does not fall under 1 of those 7 categories.

Valentine Holmes?
.
1. Still playing NFL..who knows when that will cease or end up. Is he available?
2. Turns 25 next year. is he too old for OT's criteria
3. Nth Qld witll have 1 st crack before we will even get a shot..as will other strong or wealthy clubs
4. Mary factor. Why would he
5. We dont have the money
6. TPA's...hidden somewhere in the owners or boards filing cabinet
7. . Will he stay?...or go and play NZ rugby and try that on for size. No more Jarryd Hayne's, may not meet OT's criteria either

Otherwise good point. I was going to say Vunivalu from the Storm but you trumped me!

Indeed it is all a conundrum.
In many ways what I am proposing is just use what we have already in the ranks save a superstar who might just come(highly doubtful) and we remain that way until such time as the coach and others have vacated the place.
My thought re < 25 is simply that if we get someone good we may get 2 bites at the cherry with them namely a 3 year contract and then a 2 year contract makes them 31 at the oldest and then off to ESL if they are looking for a few more years.
We shouldn't be holding contracts on players that will be looking to upgrade at 30 odd years of age unless they are true superstars and that way we can renew our roster and give our youth some chance of getting through the system.
People still suggesting Joey Leilua and I cringe at the notion as I do with Josh Morris when I look at players like Ramien, Vinavalu, Manu, Xeri, Cotric let alone Latrell Mitchell all running around in other teams.

Still banging on with the same anti - Millward agenda...Millward signs the players the coach wants...it is that simple....
If you think Millward gave us a good set of backs for 2019 and no indication that he is going to improve the backline for 2020, then I must say that your standards are lower then mine.

I have a go at Mary, Millward, Johnston, Craig Young and the Board all the time. I do this because each of the above are bringing down our Club.

All correct and valid points. But it looks like the only ones you want of those available in the short term and only maybe.... will be the Storm winger if the press is correct
The rest will now get long term contracts likely or locked up like Cherry and what they want to do to the Turbo Bros. + Ramien is a done deal at the Sharks I heard yesterday.... but.not announced yet?..I think or maybe it has been

O.K ..I'll spell it out for you again....Coach tells Millward which players he wants and Millward then signs/ or goes after them...This is millward's job. If the players are sub-standard, there are a number of reasons

1/ Coach picked a Dud or cannot progress a player any further in terms of skill set.

2/. Coach cannot progress a player any further in terms of skill set.

3/. Coach cannot build tactics that suit the squad....

I could go on and on...but hopefully you can understand these points are the main issue, not millward.

And Ultimately the FAULT LIES SQUARELY AT THE FEET OF THE BOARD.

.Have a good evening possm

The incompetence of Ian Millward followed by the lack of desire for any player worth their pound of salt want to be coached by McIdiot would result in no player joining Illawarra. Once we get a proper coach and an experience recruitment manager then we will ready to attract players and by then the St George Dragons will re-emerge.

We need a backup for cam.
