Players who would have been better off staying at their clubs

Just a case of a player peaking early. In Clinton, Lang & Ross the Panthers had a very handy front row rotation but when Lang retired and Ross received his pay-day from Cronulla, Clinton was exposed as a run of the mill prop who rarely dominated the middle. He showed plenty of promise in his early days, but that's all it was and Brisbane were sold a lemon.

This is James Tamou to a tee.

It was bound to end in tears with the emergence of Reynolds. Sandow was just too big a defensive liability at this level and as skillful as he was, he would have been found wanting in any era of the sport.

Chris Sandow had gambling problems and weight issues when he went to Parramatta. He got over those issues but could never get his confidence back. I just think Sandow was a better fit at Souths, and off the cuff player who fitted better in the system. Sandow also never got scapegoated when Souths lost unlike his time Parramatta. Sandow was never a great defender but neither was Jamie Soward who was major cog on premiership team like the Dragons. Greg Inglis also lifted the burden off players from Sandow and John Sutton in terms of pressure when the team was struggling.

I still think things would have worked out better for Sandow at Souths. Where a coach like Michael Maguire who has a talent of getting players to reach the potential as in the case with John Sutton. Sandow had a revolving door of coaches with his time in Parramatta ( Stephen Kearney, Ricky Stuart, and Brad Arthur). He also expressed frustration being dropped to reserve grade and not gelling into Arthur's system something which was never a pattern with him at Souths.

You're point about Adam Reynolds is acknowledged though. But for Sandow I really think it was a sliding doors moment.

Yeah but it wasn't Paul Vautin choice to leave Manly, unlike the other names mentioned. I guess I didn't spell it out in the thread, but its more to players who have left looking for greener pastures and found it not to be. Vautin has made it no secret he was shattered when Manly told him they didn't need him no more.
You are correct regarding Vautin.

3 seasons including off-field dramas, getting dropped to reserve grade, doing his ACL (and missing the 2003 GF), getting decked by a former team mate, his disastrous SoO debut

Who was it that decked Hodges? He deserves a Victoria Cross for not for bravery, but for giving 90% of NRL fans some wicked pleasure.

His SoO debut was almost orgasmic. If there was ever a "The History Of State of Origin - The Best Highlights", his performance back then should take up most of the DVD.

Mat Rogers - Sharks

I honestly think if he played his whole career at the Sharks he would have been in the same breath as Paul Gallan and Andrew Ettingshausen he was that good the time he was there.

I know played on a couple of Wallaby teams, but I really think he wasted his best years going to union. He came back to Titans when he was in his twilight years but never reached the status he could of by staying with the Sharks his whole career.

I'd say Dane Nielsen, but he was just deadset hopeless and I don't even Bellamy could help him. He was lazy, plod like speed, and had no ability.

I put Nielsen in the top 3 Warrior dud signings of all time with Matt Jobson (that one always brings the lols) and Denan Kemp.

Blake Ayshford and Jono Wright say hi.

As a sharks fan, I can't thank you enough!

Soward was like Prince, Thurston and Lockyer where he could be a liability but he was never as bad as Sandow. Unlike the others who could be covered with good team selections, Sandow was an out and out liability who crueled whatever team he was in with lazy efforts.

I couldn't picture Maguire being a big fan either. He seems to have a preference, where he'd much rather an organised structured player than a loose cannon like Chris. That's why he was happy to move Taylor onto the Titans.

This is James Tamou to a tee.

I can see that. He never improved on his 2012, with that said, his form reversal in 2015 was a major cog behind the Cows success that season and he was great in the Grand Final. In comparison, Clinton peaked as a 22 year old, Tamou came into his own as a 24-year old and went onto win a premiership at 27. I think it was a good mutual decision, Tamou didn't have a lot left to offer at the Cows and he received a nice pay day on the way out. While there's some short term pain there for the Cows who I'm sure would prefer him over Kaufusi, the space did allow them to sign McLean who I can see taking his game to the next level at Townsville.

Johnno Wright was a lot better than Dane Nielsen. Blake Ayshford is playing really well for the Warriors. As a Warriors fan, I'll take both your thanks and Blakes form and be quite happy.
Ayshford is one of those who needed a special coach . . . could be a Cheyse Blair with the right guidance
