I actually wonder whether the PNG NRL bid need to consider a long term view to having a number of teams in the NRL 2 Teir (supposing the wider merger happens)

ie. If NSW and QLD Cups merge (and stay conferences) maybe the PNG NRL Could become a little more elite and have say 4 - 6 teams and be counted as a conference as well. (ultimately adding teams as plaer depth should one day be HUGE)

josh are you serious? 4 to 6 teams from PNG ....more elite than ISC ....have you watched a game of ISC and a game in PNG .......... they have a few hurdles first to get one in which will struggle 4 to 6 would be farce!!

perhaps they should ask the ISC clubs before they start talking about playing in their competition. There are massive issues with visas travel costs safety medical etc to overcome before they are even a thought. Next hurdle is the internal corruption and the constant battle of who is controlling the game.

the cost of one team would be huge as they will have to pay the ISC clubs costs to go there and theres to come here if they can get player visas

the domestic kumuls would be a bottom ISC team and if that was to be 4 to 6 teams it would be cricket on the score board not rugby league!

You can tell when someone has hardly read and post without thinking for more than a second and you gyallop have just qualified as one.

I said Png should take a LONG TERM VIEW to having 4 -6 teams in an NRL Teir two structure. You are discounting the reality that PNG has MORE RL PLAYERS THAN QUEENSLAND NOW!!!

Given the right development this can be translated into more elite players from PNG than QLD.

I also DID NOT say that they would play in the QLD CUP, I said in the TEIR 2 NRL structure. There is no reason that PNG in time (and nzrl) could not form additional conferences to nsw and qld conferences.

Josh I thought about your post for longer than you must have done to write it.

The immediate thread is about the Qld Cup and the suggestion that PNG should enter that competition thats why I refer to it.

How does PNG have a long term strategy when they cant get past the short term problems?

As far as more players than Qld what are the number of registered players in PNG and Qld?

NRL Bid on region tour

PNG NRL BID Development Manager Shane Morris has begun a regional tour as part of the Coca-Cola National All Schools Development program and in preparation for the 2012 National Schoolboys Championships to be held in Port Moresby in September.
Morris, along with well-respected rugby league administrator Arnold Krewanty travelled to Kokopo yesterday for the NGI U15 and U17 Zone Championships. Morris and
Krewanty will cast their eyes over the talent on display at the Championships before selecting an U15 and U17 team to represent NGI at the upcoming National Championships. It will be the start of a two month long tour for Morris and Krewanty, which will take in Regional and Zone selection trials, School and Coaches updates and Zone representative squad training sessions, leading into the National Championships in late September in Port Moresby.
Accompanying them at selected stages of the tour will be former Queensland Origin and
Australian Kangaroos star Julian O’Neill. Morris said the tour was a vital component of the program.
“We not only have to deliver a structured pathway for the youth of the nation in rugby league but also deliver ongoing education to coaches, school teachers and officials involved in the program Nationally. We will be stepping up our National Coach, Referee and official updates as a lead in to running accreditation courses, so we can build a database of properly qualified coaches and administrators across PNG. It is vital that we have accredited coaches teaching the right techniques to schoolboys at an early age so they come through the program already skilled in the basic fundamentals of Rugby League. This is necessary to ensure the long term success of the program and to build a culture of professionalism in the schoolboys program
across the nation,” Morris said.
Morris said that Krewanty is one of the most respected rugby league people in PNG and he was honored that the former PNG Kumuls selector is involved. “He believes in what we are doing and to have his knowledge and understanding of PNG culture is a big assistance to what we are trying to achieve,” Morris said.
The Bid team is also happy to have Julian, a former Origin great and star International and can impart valuable knowledge to coaches and players particularly in regards to improving their specific skill levels.
“The program is growing rapidly and we need to improve our delivery in line with that growth. We are 100% dedicated and I have no doubt we will see some exceptional PNG born and bred playing and coaching talent.

The Ultimate goal would should be to have 4 conferences playing in an Coca Cola Oceania Cup. NZ,PNG,Q'land,NSW. Teams play within there own conference for regular season then top 3-4 teams from each conference go into a knockout cup style finals.

Not cheap, not easy to acheive, not going to happen any time soon but nice to have a long term vision!

In the mean time a sustainable PNG team in the Q'land cup and another NZ team in NSW cup would be nice.

I would also like to see PNG in the Qld Cup. I think that they should join the comp over the next few seasons. It would cost, if not cheaper (possibly?), the same as how the Auckland Vulcans team playing in the NSW Cup, i would imagine.

Let them build up a team in the Qld Cup, then eventually join the NRL. This won't happen for a while in my opinion.

As ''Perth Red'' wrote in the above post, a conference (aka Oceania Cup) would be a good idea as well. Having four Cups play (NSW; QLD; PNG & NZ), and meet up for a play off season at the end of the season.

both ideas are good, i think

Former Kumul joins bid team
Source:
The National, Tuesday August 07th, 2012
THE PNG NRL BID yesterday announced former Kumuls flyer Arnold Krewanty has joined the team full-time.
The West Sepik lad started this week and will take on the role of game development manager.
That will see him manage the Bid’s junior development and Queensland Cup development programmes.

Shane Morris will move to a specialised role that will see him take charge of the delivery of coach, referee and trainers updates nationally, along with preparations and implementation of the Queensland Cup programme, which will include liaising with local to PNGNRL Digicel Cup teams and helping in their team programmes.
PNGNRL BID chief executive officer Brad Tassell said it was an honour to have Krewanty on board.
“I have known Arnold for quite a few years now and I have the utmost respect for him as an administrator in PNG,” he said.
“I know he will be a valuable asset to the organisation as we move towards stepping up our development and Queensland Cup programmes.”
Tassell said the addition of Krewanty was vital because of the expansion of the BID’s programmes.
“Our national Coca-Cola Schools Programme has doubled in size and we are now extending it to investigate scholarship opportunities in Australia for talented youth coming through the programme.
“Arnold will be full-time hands-on with overseeing the programme and he will be able to concentrate specifically on improving the delivery of the programme through each zone nationally.

Is there any news or pictures of what the PNG club could be called?

This was the logo of the last club in 1997

and some of the current jerseys in the PNG comp

Think they need a more inclusive name than Port Moresby this time, something to unite the whole country behind them. PNG Tribe ?

Parkop in Bid’s hot seat
Source:
The National, Tuesday 21st August, 2012
By HENRY MORABANG
NCD Governor Powes Parkop was handed the chairmanship of the PNGNRL Bid Board by Sports and 2015 Pacific Games Minister Justin Tkatchenko.
The Moresby South MP was initially appointed as new chairman but stood down due to his heavy ministerial responsibilities. Tkatchenko handed over the chairmanship to Parkop, who was an original board member to move the Bid forward for the benefit of rugby league in the country.
The appointment of the chairman was part of the several changes to the Bid board.
Tkatchenko and the board thanked former sports minister Philemon Embel for his contribution to the Bid.
Tkatchenko wasted no time in living up to his reputation as the “action man” when he called for a meeting for the board.
The minister held discussions with the Bid management and board to seek an understanding of the Bid’s direction and programmes, which were largely funded by the PNG government.

The Minister was impressed with the National Rugby League Development Programs and the pathways created and planned to improve rugby league in PNG to ensure it remains as the nation’s national sport. He has directed the BID management to action these plans immediately.
“The BID’s National Schoolboy Development Programs are to be commended. Whilst the BIDs end goal is to secure a licence in the NRL in the future, they recognise the foundations and infrastructure need to be strong to support such an entity. Under the current CEO and Board they have managed the BIDs finances exceptionally. Their entire pathway is clearly mapped out and their investment into the youth of PNG is outstanding and making a significant impact.”
“There is a strong understanding of the fundamental key elements that need to be done to not only fix Rugby League in PNG but progress its development so that the game regains credibility in the eyes of the NRL (National Rugby League)/ARLC (Australian Rugby League Commission) and the International Rugby League Federation. I and the PNG Government support the BIDs plans and the next vital steps are to fix the game nationally and to secure a Queensland Cup Licence for the Nation and further develop our home grown talent.”
The BID will now present its 2012-2015 strategic pathways and financial audit report to the National Executive Council in the next few weeks.

Please God no. It's going to take a brave man to try and start a franchise in PNG. First of all, its a horrible location, no-one's going to want to live there. Port Moresby is a dangerous place. No-one's going to want to go to the games, especially not people from Australia or NZ. I even doubt that people from PNG would want to go. Would much rather a Central Coast team, or at least a second Brisbane team or an Ipswich team.

Storm legend awed at league’s impact on kids
Source:
The National, Tuesday 18th September, 2012
MELBOURNE Storm legend Scott Hill will return for the Ela Motors Legends of League challenge in November much more aware of the contribution his presence in the country will do for rugby league in PNG.
Hill admitted at the event launch at the Ela Motors showroom that he was ‘taken-aback’ by the effect rugby league had on the kids in the country.
“It’s special, from the rugby league background I come from to see how big the game is. Obviously with Government backing and the amount of work the PNGNRL Bid does to develop these young kids, and the game country wide is huge,” Hill said.
“I commend Brad and the Bid team for the effort and time that they put into their work for the game.
It is huge honour to come to a country as passionate about rugby league, and see the things that are happening for the game.”
The former New South Wales Origin star accompanied Australian Legends of League organiser Troy Byers to Port Moresby, and was present with PNGNRL Bid chief officer Brad Tassell, Ela Motors national sales and marketing manager Rob McKeon, and Bid committee member Graham Osbourne.
Sports Vice-Minister Labi Amaiu was present on behalf of the government.
The event is confirmed for Nov 18 with members of the public given the opportunity to vote for their favourite former Kumul to be part of the PNG Legends.
The players receiving the highest votes will be added to a list of 25 names that was finalised by selectors Arnold Krewanty, Mark Mom and former national coach Bob Bennett.
Voting can be done either online at www.pngnrlbid.com , at Ela Motors website www.elamotors.com.pg, by email to admin@pngnrlbid.com or by text to 7030 0999.
Tickets will be sold at the match venue only on the day.

Duo rise together through league ranks to Kumuls
Source:
The National, Friday 21st September 2012
TWENTY-TWO year old Agmark Guria and Prime Minister’s XIII debutant Wartovo Puara will realise a six-year dream when he runs out against Australia this Sunday.
“Not yet, I want to be a full Kumul,” Puara said over lunch.
Even more special, is sharing a childhood dream with a close friend and teammate, halfback Israel Eliab, since they played their first rugby league games in the East New Britain schoolboys competition for Tanaka Primary School in 2008.
“We’ve played together since we were kids, from Tanaka to the PNG Junior Kundus, Gurias and then PMs XIII,” Puara goes back in time.
After finally breaking into the senior Gurias side in 2011 and contributing to a great part of the Gurias dream run to the grand final, Eliabs departure from ‘Radaaz’ for the Port Moresby Vipers in the 2012 season split the combination.
Puara stayed on and became the Gurias most valuable player in the grand final winning season, while Eliab moved to the city.
While Eliab instantly made his entry into the international arena last season, Puara has had to work harder another year
“I want to make a difference,” the young hooker from Raim Village, Vunadidir said.
“If I can play my part and help my captains Glen Nami and Dion Aiye, and the team in achieving what we want to achieve in any way, I will put my body on the line.”
And it is true knowing how hard he is at the contact.
At just 172cm in height, and a 78kg weight, it is hard to believe that he was one of the biggest hitters of season 2012.
He will lurk in the shadow of long-serving Kumul and idol Charlie Wabo. But is not letting this chance to make a difference go by come Sunday.

I would have thought building a proper stadium would have been more important than buying into a NRL club for PNG? They would be better linking with the WARL providing some scholarships to the best 2-3 U18's each season to live in Perth and play for the Pirates SG Ball team, learn a mining trade whilst here etc We now have a link in with Curtin Uni so the kids could be linked up through them. Getting unity back in the governing of the game over there would be a very positive step forward. Too much in fighting and self interest/politics has hampered them for too long.

BUYING into an NRL team looms as a serious option for the Papua New Guinea government - although it hasn't given up on eventually having its own team in the competition.
Rugby league is hugely popular amongst PNG's seven million inhabitants and it's the only country that has the code as its national sport, but co-ordination between teams, the game's governing body and the government has in the past stymied growth opportunities.
PNG sports minister Justin Tkatchenko is now hopeful a meeting of the game's stakeholders and their international counterparts in late November will act as a catalyst for change and growth in the sport in his country.
"The game is stuck, that's what we're facing right now," Tkatchenko said.
"If we can't get in on the NRL by setting up our own team - look at the logistics, it's going to cost an absolute fortune - but if we can get in (an Australian) team that's already set up with all the facilities there with a team that's on the way up ... then why try and re-create the wheel that's already there?"
