As early as 2025??? Where are they going to play? There is no NRL level stadium in PNG or Cairns? What team do they amass in that timeframe??

The NFS in Port Moresby would be fine for fly-in/fly-out games. As for Cairns, maybe this finally gets the rectangular stadium we’ve all been waiting on?

If this is true, then that is a terrible expansion choice from the NRL. The big question the journos should ask is what happens when the government stops funding PNG?

Either the NRL takes over funding it and pisses off the rest of the comp, or loses a team and f**ks up the tv deal.

Lol,apparently this whole story stems from ns oval not getting a few new seats! that has allegedly put bears out of the running and made png #1 choice! Typical Sydney media really.

OK some funny business going on here.

That article originally had quotes from the Channel 7 Reporter Michelle Bishop about the PNG side, and now has completely deleted them and is just reposted old articles and quotes from months ago.

As @BuffaloRules stated its not like Michelle Bishop is a noted RL reporter.

I suspect her mail was "bullshit" or she is trolling Fox.

PVL isn’t stupid. It won’t be enough for the government to prop up a PNG bid.

The only reason for PVL to go for this is if he’s getting promised stadiums in Aus, or some other grift. I would have thought he may have learnt a thing of 2 from the NSW ‘promises’ on stadiums he secured.

This is it, they're going to struggle to get any Aussie to play for them, unless they are given some huge allowances. They will rely solely on locals which will take at least a decade for them to get up to a remotely decent level.

Once again the NRL is acting in the best interest of external organisations. I'm still not buying that this will be announced though.
Why would cairns struggle to attract players ?

The bid itself is not being run an individual but by the government of PNG,” Hill said.

“It could (go ahead without Albanese’s support) but there’s no doubt having both the Australian and the PNG government involved is a game changer.”

Png govt needs to upgrade the ground for safety and also capacity

a 40k stadium would get filled every week and improve our crowd average as a code

None of what you are quoting is new.

Its from months ago, Fox has since removed the quotes from the C7 reporter.

With the Bears pulling out it’s now a “one horse race“ apparently …

Did Perth pull their bid already?

I don't think the NRL is really busting a gut to get a new stadium in regional QLD that will only have 6 or 8 games per season.

The QLD state government is going to run screaming from any funding for that.

Its a hilariously shit premise

The Bears are only $11M short of being in the NRL. I mean they could fund that themselves if that was true.

I gotta feeling we will be in for a lot more of this clickbait in relation to the 18th team… every possible location will get some airtime over the offseason …

PVL is no naive goose … just ask the Victorian Racing…

$20m a year is not enough … wouldn’t even scratch the surface
