PNG if true may be the silliest choice of expansion out there. Perth, a second New Zealand side or even an Adelaide side would do more for the sport than PNG.

Even if the entire PNG national team signed for this new PNG team they'd get pumped and struggle to win a game, in terms of luring big name coaches or players over I just don't see that happening even if they paid 500-600k over market rate. They very well could be paying a million dollars over for genuine star players.

Why would cairns struggle to attract players ?

Small city, not much to do in comparison to major cities. They'd be more attractive than PNG but still it'd be a place for depth players and overpaid above average players in my opinion.

like I’ve said nrl are all for a fast Buck under Vlandys so if the fed dollars stack up I’m not surprised they’ll be team 18. If it will work and if it has any long term viability about it are a very different thing. At least it’s not another queensland or nsw club.
Port Moresby, THATS IN QLD!!!

PNG bears based in queensland playing some home games in sydney, makes total sense.
If we must have a PNG side then partnering them with a local club probably is the best way to go about it. That way you've got an entity well placed to takeover when the inevitable happens and it all falls to shit.

The problem with PNG partnering with the Bears is that sooner or later you'll probably end up with another club in Sydney/NSW, which wouldn't be ideal. Then again nothing about a PNG side is ideal as it makes no sense politically, financially, from a business perspective, etc, so f**k it, why not I guess.

Maybe they should play out of Darwin instead of Cairns. At least then they aren’t encroaching on the Cowboys.
How so? Cairns is 4 hours away from townsville, and as such PNG have an estimated 10 million pop to choose from, taking then from Townsville is moot, the only reason cairns is mentioned, is for a safer home base to house both local and international players and families aswell as any coaching staff, in comparison to that of Port Moresby,
Darwin is too far away in comparison to Cairns, and also can set up a somewhat neighbouring derby with the Cowboys

Mostly it was me being a smartarse, but we’ve all heard for years and years about the NQ Cowboy fans that travel 4+ hrs each way to each game from all these surrounding areas. Therefore Cairns must be in the Cowboys catchment. :)

Darwin is virgin territory and remote, but I think it’d be an easier sell than Pt Moresby.

More seriously, I just think this “PNG by 2025” thing is a bad and rushed idea and I would actually prefer the Govt sporting dollars be put into setting them up properly for a later entry. Maybe 2030. Maybe.

I think the rise of China has our government of either persausion spooked and they're putting in a PNG team to counter China's activities in the Pacific region.

Cairns is 100% Cowboys, only dopey Sydney siders think its not.

They aren't going to support a PNG team.

Luckily it's not really a concern, as there is no stadium in Cairns and won't be for at least a Decade.

If the government is going to build a stadium no one wants in Tassie, they can build a stadium no one wants in Cairns
