Just reading some PNG papers on line and I saw that that the Digicell cup's minor premiership trophy is the Don Fox Shield.
I immediately thought someone with a sense of humour had named it after the worst mistake ever in a grand final.

Eddie Waring: 'e's a poor lad 'e is Don Fox

But no! There is another Don Fox who was a PNGRL administrator

Wouldn’t it just. The passion and packed stadiums would be a nice change
Not unless the ticket prices were heavily subsidized by either the PNG government, Australian government, foreign international corporations based in png or the NRL.

Or any potential PNG NRL franchise could just view home ticket sales as a loss-leader and charge next to nothing for entry into the stadium.

I totally agree with you. The idea is not feasible economically and you also have problems logistically.

It’s a shame though because the amount of support you would get would be enormous

It’s absolutely a crying shame but in so many ways so very RL in that on the one hand you have a RL crazy country like PNG that has more than twice the population(and growing rapidly every year) of NZ but on the other hand said country is a poor 3rd world country.

Even the Americans can see the merits of a png nrl team

cmon albo make it happen

There is a little bit in that article about having one television set in the whole village which kind of underlines why they shouldn’t have a side yet. The area is just too poor.

I would love a PNG side in the competition but I would want it at a time where the country could afford it and sustain it and where they could field a competitive side by recruiting players and being able to keep their best players.

Just need to get the govt to give them $20mill a year forever, convince fox and ch9 to send tv crews to png weekly, and somehow convince 25 current nrl players to move to a crime ridden third world country and they are a shoe in lol

I’d rather wait for their country to be semi developed first. If that was the case, then it would be an awesome choice because you could convince players to go there and they would not be relying on a foreign government to fund them.

The reason it wouldn’t work with a government funding it is because of two reasons (and this is even without the logistics of it)

1. How long would it take for some interest to start whinging about the Australian government funding a football team. It is different to a government funding schools or hospitals, you are funding people’s hundred of thousand or million dollar pay packets. It is not hard to imagine people going off at this

2. Do you think that other codes or sports aren’t going to see what happens here. Do you think soccer, fumbleball, cricket etc aren’t going to ask the federal government to fund teams or development costs for them in the Pacific Islands/PNG?

‘Now is the time’: Richard Marles has met NRL to push for Papua New Guinea team

On visit to Port Moresby, defence minister says ‘it would be so meaningful’ for PNG to become National Rugby League’s 18th team
Australia’s deputy prime minister has held talks with National Rugby League officials to push the case for a Papua New Guinea team, declaring “now is the time” to expand the competition.

Richard Marles, visiting PNG in his capacity as defence minister, said on Thursday that he had “personally spoken with the NRL a number of times about this”.

“I’ve long felt that it would be so meaningful for PNG to have a team in the NRL,” Marles the defence minister said.

PNG launched its campaign to become the 18th NRL team in the competition earlier this year, prompting the Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, to pledge his support at the Pacific Islands Forum in July. Albanese said the NRL should look at eventually having a team from PNG or a broader “Pacific” team.
Marles offered enthusiastic support after a meeting with the PNG prime minister, James Marape, who told him rugby league was “a passion” but could also help foster national unity.

“Certainly, from our government’s point of view, we’re really keen to pursue the idea,” Marles said in Port Moresby.

“And I think now’s the time to see when we can actually get this off the ground and really take steps down the path of making this a reality. It’d be really important for PNG [and] it’d be so important for our relationship.”

Referring to the name of PNG’s national team, Marles added: “It would be absolutely incredible to see the Kumuls be playing in the NRL.”

He did not put a definite timeframe on the team’s entry into the competition, saying “we want to work to that end as quickly as we can”.

Marles and Marape discussed how to advance the NRL bid during a visit otherwise dominated by a focus on closer defence cooperation between Australia and PNG.
Marles said Australia wanted to help plug any “gaps” in PNG’s defence capability. He said it “makes sense to be working more closely with friends” given the tense strategic circumstances – a reference to growing tensions between China and the US.

That cooperation could include more surveillance missions to detect illegal fishing in the Pacific.

“Certainly for PNG, for a lot of Pacific countries, their exclusive economic zone is one of the most important economic assets that they have and it’s really important that we’re protecting that,” Marles said.

Marape emphasised trade and economic ties between PNG and Australia. “We’re now at an almost, if not at an equal level of relationship; we see eye-to-eye in most matters,” the PNG prime minister said.

Senior PNG ministers will visit Canberra for talks in November and Albanese is expected to visit Port Moresby in December.

Did anyone bother to ask him how he thought they could raise $15million revenue a year? Or how they could get tv to agree? or how they would have a team capable of competing? I guess not lol.

Australia gives around $500 million a year in aid to PNG.

It’s small change for Australia to fund an NRL team that would unite PNG, further link PNG to Australia and decrease the likelihood of future Chinese influence.

I still think it’s unlikely to happen though.

It is, but it would need to be forever, you think the nrl is going to take a chance on a govt that changes every few years continually funding them? They are incredibly conservative, you think they are going to accept the risk of png? Just a big lol

then throw in Asking foxtel and ch9 to cover games I. Port Moresby. More lol’s
