I'd love to see them have the balls and money to do it but they dont have either. It requires significant long term funding, figuring out how you stop other NRl clubs poaching their best players (because they are going to be 100% reliant on producing their own), the concerns around safety of visiting teams, convincing TV to cover home games by sending crews there and all that for no real financial return for NRL coffers. Its a nice dream but thats all it will be sadly.I for one would love to see a PNG team in the NRL. They are mad about the game over there. It reminds me of India in the 90s when there would be a black out during a cricket match and someone would start the radio in their car. Half the street would be listening to the cricket with that. Kids would spend entire days just playing cricket. India of the 80s and 90s wasn't the rich 5th biggest economy is it today.
On field, they'd suck for a while but their ground would become the graveyard for others. The Parra V Cowboys game was in the news because of the humidity, Port Moresby would be even more humid, they'd get a few wins a year.
Someone in the NRL just has to have a belief that it'll be better for the game.

Safety will be fine for teams and crews. Its an issue played up to target a developing nation.I'd love to see them have the balls and money to do it but they dont have either. While there may be criminals, providing security will be a good business for some local companies.
I would say idiotic fans would be in more danger than players or crews.
PNG govt will ensure their golden hen isn't touched.
As a comparison, how many Aussies have been kidnapped or killed while doing the kokoda. If there's any, it will be less than a handful.
Yet afl can spend billions on the giants and the suns with little returnThe real reason it won't happen is money.
It will not lead to an increase in any TV monies, no merchandise opportunities, and gate receipts will be negligible.
Combine this with the fact that we are plunging into a world wide recession, means extravagances like spending tens of millions annually on a sporting team in an impoverished nation won't be high on anyone's priority list.
I agree it won't happen due to money. UN was meant to help a few years ago. Not sure where that idea went. The real reason it won't happen is money.

the recession will be long over by the time they look to add png
So gws is more likely to pay off for afl than png for rugby league ?Because a) the AFL is banking on this paying off longer term but mainly (and I say mainly) because it translated into more money for them by them signing a massive fat TV deal recently.
Why wasn’t the pm png game held there this year? Why did Cutters have to be threatened with expulsion if they didnt travel there to play? And Aus govt step in to provide armed protection? Why is there a lvl3 govt travel warning in place Not to visit the place?Safety will be fine for teams and crews. Its an issue played up to target a developing nation.

643million returns a year lolYet afl can spend billions on the giants and the suns with little return

they could’ve put that team in timbuctoo it would’ve got the same tv dollars. The giants are. A baskecase the afl funds hoping things will change for them
png is a way less risky bet but not popular on this forum bc people want to turn the nrl into an afl lite competition
Yeh we covered thisPNG adds no extra money to the game unfortunately.
And a third world country, rife with corruption and security concerns is a risk in anyone's language.
Yeh we covered this
gws doesn’t really add any money for the afl on its own. But the extra game adds value just like it would in league
in a nation of almost nine million people it’s pretty funny how you characterise the whole country as broke and corrupt
this thinking is just so insular
international expansion is the next growth area for the nrl
png are a great choice as team 20 or 21 into the nrl competition
Ah yeh wonder how the png hunters have made such a go of it then being based thereThe majority of people live below the poverty line. The average wage is about $4000 a year.
Government corruption is rampant.

These are all facts

maybe you should message Wayne Bennett and tell him he’s wrong forming a junior partnership with png to develop nrl players
So the dolphins linked up with png and Wayne knew nothing about itI didn't say there was any issue with the talent or forming a partnership.
It's quaint that you think Wayne Bennett is involved in administration like this
PNG adds no extra money to the game unfortunately.
