A little more from the PNG Press

PNG launching NRL bid

THE country is launching a bid to join Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) as the competition’s 18th team by the 2025 season with the Government pledging its support.
The 17th team are The Dolphins who will enter the world’s toughest rugby league competition next year.
Sports Minister Wesley Raminai said during the launch in Port Moresby yesterday that the Government had allocated K30 million for the bid project which would be used over the next three years.

He said Papua New Guinea had a good chance of getting the nod for its bid as it had ticked most of the requirements of the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and NRL.
“The Government has invested significantly in sports infrastructure since 2015 which gave us the now renamed Santos National Football Stadium,” Raminai said.
“The depth of talents we have can be seen with the Kumuls now ranked fifth in the world, and SP Hunters winning the 2017 Queensland Intrust Super Cup (now Hostplus Cup). We are confident that we will be ready to become the 18th NRL team.”
PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chairman Sandis Tsaka said the growth of rugby league in the last eight years had placed PNG in a favourable position to meet NRL’s minimum requirements.

The requirements were;
-governance and risk,
-financial strength,
-commercial strategy,
-football competitiveness,
-participation and pathways.

“We know that it will be a competitive process with other teams from Australia and New Zealand also bidding for the spot,” Tsaka said.
“But we are confident that our bid will be successful, given the investments and partnerships we have developed for the game in PNG,” Tsaka said.
“We have the massive potential for growth and expansion of the game in PNG and the Pacific market.
“We thank the Government and Prime Minister James Marape for partnering in this bid.
“The cost of running this project will be significantly more than K30 million, that is why we have to work around with our partners.
“Once we demonstrate credentials as a prospective participant, it will costs more, so that is why we will be planning on commercial strategies going forward.”
The board of the PNG NRL Bid was also announced during the launch.

It includes Ian Tarutia (representing Port Moresby’s business community), Kumul Petroleum managing director Wapu Sonk, PNGRFL chief executive Stanley Hondina, PNG Sports Foundation chief executive Albert Veratau and Stan Joyce.

Can they just drop this it will never happen. Just imagine trying to attract high marquee players to live in military style compounds in one of the most dangerous cities in the world. The country is poor, tribal and corrupt as f**k. Not an ideal place to have a sporting franchise

The big negative if this happened would be that it would likely mean PNG will never have a full time professional comp of its own.

I know it's slim chance of ever happening but it would be great for the game and open up opportunities for players from other Countries as well.

Why do I get visions of Full Metal Jacket’s military training scenes when I read this. It’s a shame that R Lee Emrey has died because he would have made a good inaugural coach

I imagine if it was to happen they would surely have to be based in Cairns or even Brisbane and FIFO for game days. Direct from Cairns to Port Moresby is 1h20m if they could get some sort of deal/sponsorship with Air Niugini.

Even then it would be incredibly hard for them to attract and keep players long term. The best PNG players would get picked off by other clubs after a good season and only some “last chance” Aus/NZ players would sign for them. Essentially they’d be a revolving door club and would struggle to ever get out of the bottom 4.

There was talk of a PNG/Hunters junior team starting in the Queensland junior comps pre-covid, hopefully that can happen in the next few years. Far more realistic pathway for getting PNG players in to NRL systems.

I think it's a great idea. It's certainly not a great idea from a financial standpoint and if NRL is looking for that then it'd be best to have a team in Perth.

However, I think even if you had a team in Perth for 20 years, you will not achieve the crowd support and passion you'll have in PNG. What they lack in money in a 3rd world country, they make up in passion and raw talent.

It would also mean NRL will have to change themselves to ORL or PRL but it's not been NRL since the Warriors were admitted.

There are gated communities in first world countries like USA. There are military style compounds in countries like Brazil and South Africa both of which had Football World cups. Having some presence in the Western World might actually attract some investment towards PNG.

I can see the opposite as well like the Bolivia effect. Imagine being a First World RL team who sees military on the streets and loses the match. It may happens once a season but that's good enough for the people in PNG.

So not much different to the West Tigers then. Premiership success wouldn't even be the success criteria for a team like that and that's a weird criteria anyway unless you've got a Socialist comp where everyone is guaranteed a Premiership every 18 years.

I mean if Fiji could win a gold medal in Rugby and the entire country has a Public Holiday, I can see how big beating the Tigers, Bulldogs or Dragons will be for the team. If they managed to ambush a bigger team, that's even better.

Pretty sure they have more pressing matters to spend govt. money on!
Like their national sport, and to be part of the worlds best competition in that particular sport.... geez PR, really grabbin at straws now... best way to get that team now is for WA to break away and become its own country like they proposed some few years back, then they can spend their WA govt. money on bringing in the NRL team theyve always wanted

PVL should introduce a Perth-based team on the provision that fumbleball is banned by the WA government from being played professionally in the state and illegal for the media to report on it or broadcast the sport, with the West Coast Eagles to transition to rugby league to represent Perth in the NRL. That would get the southern states riled up.

I'd prefer it id they named their team the Crocodiles or one of the birds of paradise they have on that beautiful tropical island.

Papua Crocodiles would be a great name for country that prides itself on tribal conflict and views rugby league as the perfect game to live out their customs. Lions are beautiful and majestic creatures, but it wouldn't do PNG justice to adopt an African/Asian feline species as their brand when they have so many unique options that represent their beautiful land far more accurately.

I'd go with Papua as the name to encompass West Papua, Papua and PNG. There's more marketing opportunities by appealing to everyone who lives in Papua.
