NRL is a super conservative org that has time and again said any new clubs business case has to stack up. A club being 100% reliant on Govt funding for existence isnt a strong business case!

Even IF the government under writes the team entirely there are still risks involved. Can we guarantee player safety long term? The moment a team is caught up in violence in that country the NRL will be under huge pressure to pull out of the country. Funding is only one issue facing the team.

Don't get me wrong I think the Australian government should be increasing funding to PNG because having unstable countries in our local region is never a good thing. I also think the NRL should really be pouring more money into the country to look to increase players coming from the region (which will be more important than ever as we expand potentially towards 20 teams).

I don't think it should ever happen but really any plan to bring them in in a short time frame (like less than 10 years) is probably really unrealistic.

A PNG NRL side would be totally reliant on government funding for a very long time to be sustainable.

He has provided an example where a change in government has lead to a backflip on funding for a sports project, thus showing what should be obvious everyone, but apparently isn't to many people, that a PNG side would be very risky because it'd only be a matter of time before priorities changed in government and their funding is cut.

The foreign aid budget is $4.5billion ish a year. $20million of it wont get specifically announced or included as NRL hasnt made a decision and its a drop in the proverbial ocean of spending in that portfolio..
