A few lines later govt says no final amount has been decided, love to know where the $600mill has come from lol

from a money point of view, even if only half that, yes. From a realsitic long term viability of a successful nrl club, not really.

I hope nrl has a plan b for them and doesn’t screw the png fans when the govt changes its mind.

nrl “ any new nrl club has to have a strong business case”
nrl this week “f**k a business case, give us that tax payer money”
60 millon a year is an amazing number

guess you can understand why they are ignoring everyone else

If only other bids could get this kind of support

Also it should have no effect on other expansion teams. PNG wont be funded by the next TV deal. So whatever the broadcasters are after can still bring a 19th team in next cycle.

Edit: Ideally two extra teams post PNG. Perth for the Australian side of media rights and NZ2 to push it up in NZ.

Perth provides zero value to the broadcasters.

The Eagles and Dockers draw dreadful TV ratings in Perth. The Lions draw better ratings in Brisbane than AwFuL games broadcast in Perth that don't involve the Eagles and Dockers. Games that don't feature the Lions and Suns draw just 15k fewer viewers in Brisbane than games in Perth that don't feature the Eagles or Dockers.

The Broncos draw more than twice as many viewers in Brisbane than the Eagles or Dockers draw in Perth.

Only 8k people from Perth watch regular season NRL games.

Ch9 don't want Perth.

The Perth govt as part of their bid will spend 100 million doing up their suburban ground which will be shared by 3 sports as the best it can do for rugby league

that’s a rounding error for what png will drum up

The WA Gov haven't provided a very compelling case. The press release from Venueswest basically said Perth should have a team because its local businessmen will make money from it and tourism will benefit from Queenslanders and New South Welshmen flying to Perth.

The only reason the WA Gov wants Origin and Magic Round is for tourism.

With Perth it’s a case of beggars can’t be choosers we rank a long way from the important sports

png loves our games we don’t have to spend hundreds of millions trying to convert a few fumbles and count it as a success

PNG bid 600m in funding.

WA bid $0 in funding from the WA government and on going losses for decades.

PNG first then Perth next once the WA premier comes to the table with a package.

I hope Perth gets a team one day, but not until more important markets are accommodated.

Perth is well down the pecking order in importance. It provides very little value and will be more of a hindrance.

If the 60mil a year from Canberra is legit, its a no brainer. We basically get massive funding for a decade to setup pacific pathways.
It's obviously not legit on face value though.

If the $600mil over ten years figure is accurate, which isn't a given (seems low to me), then that would be what the government has budgeted for the relevant departments to implement the whole program, not a figure that they'd be giving to the NRL or spending to fund a PNG/Pasifika side. The majority of that $60mil a year wouldn't even be going to RL programs, let alone the NRL, but to associated education programs and investment into necessary infrastructure.

If the numbers that have been thrown around in the media are accurate, which again isn't a given, then the PNG/Pasifika NRL side will receive roughly $20mil annually in funding from the Australian government, which won't even be enough to fund a club with their expenses frankly.

Also the same thing will happen to those pathways once the funding runs out or is redirected as the team BTW; either somebody else will pick up the bill or they'll effectively disappear overnight, and the NRL can't really afford it.
Also it should have no effect on other expansion teams. PNG wont be funded by the next TV deal. So whatever the broadcasters are after can still bring a 19th team in next cycle.

It's inevitable that it'll have an effect on other expansion teams because they'll take a license that almost certainly should have gone to a another team by rights. This PNG side necessitates other cities, regions, and bids miss out, and the group that ends up missing out will undoubtably have been a better proposition commercially than PNG. It's pretty disgusting frankly, an undeniable case of cronyism preformed in the open for all to see.

There's no way that the NRL won't charge broadcasters for the extra content just because the government is helping to fund the team either. That simply isn't how the business works.

There is another Elephant in the room.

The Kumuls are f**king dogshit, like to call them a Tier 2 nation is generous, like Tier 3 at best.

There is a lot of work to be done there.
Not really, they lost to Tonga by 6 points at the world cup just 12 months ago and put up a huge fight against the Aus PM XIII, they are good, just inconsistent at this stage.

6k less than Perth got for an international lol still better than the 6k who turned out for their first game I suppose.
In this case how many attended isn't anywhere near as important as how much they paid to attend.

I'd guesstimate that the average ticket price to those games in Perth and England probably would have cost somewhere around A$30.00 or £15.00. How much you want to bet the average ticket cost for the games in PNG? Maybe Two thirds the price, half, potentially even less...

World cup quarter finalist. Lost to Tonga by 6 who are "good". Lost to Aus PM XIII by 12 who are "very good"

Had a bad day out against Fiji. PNG aren't a shit side.
Mate they're garbage and so is Tonga at the moment.

Tonga and Samoa's success is totally reliant on all the heritage star players eligible to represent them being available and electing to represent them over AUS or NZ. Because they aren't producing any talent locally there's no depth beneath that surface level, which is about as deep as a puddle, and relying on those top heritage players isn't sustainable over the long term.

Both of them will be up and down, yo-yo if you will, teams until such a time as genuine, sustainable, development of the sport happens on the ground in the islands. But that development isn't happening because there's no necessity for it for so long as they believe they can rely on Australia and NZ to produce the lion's share of their talent for them. Is what it is.

The English gave away loads of freebies in that 11k crowd. All the rugby league kids in the area got one

so even in pounds it converts backs to zero dollars Australian
