i didnt speak of sponsorship…Im asking about how will people determine in 10 years time whether this move will be successful or not … not just for the team but for the NRL
If they are still around and not collecting their 10th wooden spoon we can count it a success!

Im assuming Perth might help them avoid that at least once ….

I dont think we will be relying on Perth to produce a pipeline of players any decade soon…

Seriously what are they doing with the 290 million

They could buy half the Port Moresby cbd with that and live off the rent
Presumably the NRl are not giving them a grant so there's about a $22mill hole the $29mill will be filling when they come in.

Say what you want about this team but that’s a pretty crazy win for PVL and league. $750 million dollars in funding to get this team off the ground is crazy. Im happy to eat crow, didn’t think there was any chance of this happening.

I see a lot of doubters in this thread but now we just wait and see. I think this has the potential to be a huge win for league going forward but it’s hard to say.

So the proof of success is what this brings. Forget the political stuff, the reason why the NRL have gone to PNG is because they believe it will result in a massive influx of player talent that will strengthen the comp and allow for further expansion. That they can do this on the Australian government $$ is a massive bonus.

How many NRL quality players will be produced? In the next few years a few. In the next 50? Don't know, and I'll be dead anyway.

Bonus : 18 teams Equals 1 more game to sell.

An hones Success would be more kids going to school (NRL ambassador programs, etc) and early stages of a tourism industry (it has the makings of a new fiji, hopefully all it needs is that first bit of infrastructure and publicity to get it goong)

It would be nice to get new png players coming through, but that is not a core marker of success

Guess we'll find out
My guess is they are ok with it generally and won’t look to get rid of it like an offshore wind farm.
But they are probably being quiet in case it develops into a f**kfest of corruption so they can piss it off and blame albo.

A png oil Barron worth 10 billion ?

But but but people said there is no money in png

cool! There is definitely the money there to maintain a team.

i think the biggest hurdle was getting it going. Once it is established, the hope would have to be that there is no more need for gov support.

it is hard to believe today, but the Broncos was considered a major risk back in 1988. Hopefully in 30 years, png is as obvious a success as the bronx are now

From an NRL perspective the markers of success have nothing to do with kids going to school or tourism, that's for PNG to measure.

So the nrl saves a 17.5 million grant for ten years on top of the 60 million to clubs means the game is getting 235 million from this

That’s a huge win
It will be more, the grant will be bigger by 2028. It was always going to be cost neutral for NRL, PNG offers them no intrinsic revenue value so they werent going to lose money on them every year.
It's why the only time this became realistic was when the Govt committed to funding it. If it can generate $20-30mill needed without Govt money lets hope we dont have to find out for a decade or more!

That is debatable….

This team is +10 years of potential PR wins. Even if the club never wins, and no juniors come through and in year 11 we are asking for more government cash, the team can still be a major success for the NRL.

RL will cement an image as a force for social good throughout Australia and probably in foreign markets too.a

It’s 12 free games for Australian tv companies to broadcast at no cost to the nrl

Plus a potential png tv deal

$$$$$$$$

The bid will generate large corporate support. And with the nrl grant down the track it will be more then self sufficient

People are going to be shocked how much sponsorship they get

And the value of the internationals will be decent if png can build a strong test side

I, like others have some doubts about PNG long term, but today is not the day for that.

Congratulations PNG and welcome to the NRL, the biggest club Rugby competition on the planet. I wish you the best of luck in making a success of this.

Congratulations NRL and RL in general! The NRL now is a three country league, new player pathways are about to open and hopefully flood the game with new athletes and we now have one more national team that will quickly strengthen from here to join the big boys in an increasingly competitive international game.

Thanks PVL, you aren't perfect and you don't get everything right, but f**k it's good to see someone in charge that loves the game and is at least doing something about making it the biggest sport in Australia and the Pacific.
