Gonna be interesting hearing all the RL journos bag out Ponga and the money we’re giving him, whilst not bothering to mention that they were the people wanking on last year about how we’d be ruined if didn’t re-sign him.

On a scale of 1 to 10, what do you feel the chances of KP returning to FB are before the end of this season?

Our next 5 matches are titans, sharks, sea eagles, broncos, roosters

I would say we need to win vs titans and sea eagles, and not get blown away by the other three

if we loose 4-5/5……you would think ponga to fullback and miller to 14 is the only option

Honestly I think there's a universe where we lose all 5 and keep up with the KP at 6 thing. It's all going to depend on what actually happens on the field. If he leaks 5 tries and 5 linebreaks a week over that period, then yeah... experiment over.

Just a thought, to late anyway, but Ponga has had two games back and at 6 so let’s say he had played both those in Cup to familiarise himself with position and Gamble had played 6 in both.
Is Ponga better for the run under less pressure and ready to fire against the Titans and would we have performed better in firsts possibly winning both or at least doing better.
Just a thought🤪

Maybe. There's also an argument to be made that it doesn't help him gelling with the team at all - and that he needs to work on his combinations with the guys around him on both sides of the ball.

THE pressure on Knights coach Adam O'Brien to reconsider Kalyn Ponga's immediate future has ramped up a notch after remarkably candid comments from club legend Andrew Johns.

Johns, the eighth Immortal who is also employed by the Knights as a coaching consultant, said on the Wide World of Sports website that Ponga needed to be reinstated as fullback, after attempting for the second time in his career to make the transition to five-eighth.

"He is lacking confidence, obviously, coming back from the head knocks," Johns said.

"He shouldn't be playing five-eighth [and] should go straight back to fullback.

"But then [incumbent fullback] Lachie Miller has been their best player ... I don't know."

O'Brien faces arguably the biggest call of his coaching career next week, when the Knights return to training after the bye and he selects his team to face Gold Coast at home next Sunday.

Ponga's hopes of transforming into a five-eighth have been hindered by a concussion in round two that sidelined him for five games, followed by his performance in last week's 43-12 hammering from Parramatta, during which he missed a team-high eight tackles.

His underwhelming display against the Eels prompted Johns's Channel Nine colleague, and former champion pivot, Brad Fittler to declare on the Sunday Footy Show: "I don't understand why he got moved there [to five-eighth] in the first place.

"I just feel they should put him back there [to fullback], find a place for the fullback, and move on."

Former Knights coach Nathan Brown backflipped on moving Ponga from fullback to five-eighth after two-and-a-half games in 2019, because of concerns about his defence.

Man of the match for Queensland in last year's Origin decider, there is mounting speculation Ponga will be bypassed for selection in this year's interstate-series opener on May 31.

SLATER WEIGHS IN
Queensland coach Billy Slater says it would be premature to make a call now on whether Kalyn Ponga will play in the No.1 jersey in the State of Origin series opener.

Slater and fellow selectors Gene Miles and Darren Lockyer will name the Maroons side for the May 31 clash in Adelaide in just under three weeks and incumbent fullback Ponga's place in the team will cause plenty of discussion.

The 25-year-old has played two games since returning from a six-week concussion lay-off. In Newcastle's 43-12 loss to Parramatta, he missed eight tackles and was uncharacteristically tentative while playing in the five-eighth position.

Slater was asked whether Ponga would be selected if he gets through his next two games against Gold Coast and Cronulla.

"We will make that decision in three weeks. It is premature to make it now," Slater said.

"A lot of things can happen in the next three weeks, like they have in the last three weeks. In three weeks' time we will sit down as selectors and coaches and get all our cards on the table and we will build our best hand.

"We have a duty to Queensland to give them the best possible team that we think will go out and play their best footy. That [Ponga decision] will have to wait."

Ponga has been outstanding in his seven Origin games for Queensland and was man of the match in the 22-12 series decider last year playing at fullback.

Slater said incumbency "counts" at the selection table, but other factors come into play.

"Everyone talks about loyalty and there are a few things that go into that," he said.

"It is not just about playing. It is about doing the job in the past and it is also about instilling the habits in your current game, whether it is a month or two months of football, where Queensland can trust they are the habits you are going to bring into Origin.

"You can't just flick a switch and turn it on. It is important to be playing well."

Slater said he just wants Ponga to enjoy his football.

Walsh has impressed Slater with his development.

"We see all the shiny, bright stuff that Reece does. I can see underneath that and the development he is putting into his game and the position he plays," Slater said.

"He is building that capability in his game to play Origin but he has got to be capable when the opportunity is there as well."

I think him going back to fullback might be the solution given we have a serviceable halves pairing for once in his career. Not sure where that leaves Miller.

Left right out. Miller has been regressing, and always had the errors. I like the good bits, but as I said when I first brought it up - I don't know if you can carry his downsides in the NRL. He's done less and less to convince me you can as the weeks wore on.

Maybe you give it another few games to see if it can click... but yeah I don't mind the alternative either.

I’d probably give both Ponga and Miller a few more games before making a decision. It was his first full game at 5/8 and the whole team was also terrible.

I don't really like Ponga at fullback in a lot of ways but I feel like Gamble has been playing more like what you'd hope from a 5/8. With him and Hastings our ball movement has been good, outside backs are getting good ball. With Ponga I feel like he's always trying to create something himself at 5/8 when sometimes you just need to get the ball out to your edge.

Ponga is attacking like a fullback from the 5/8 position which isn't surprising but now that we have two competent halves I'd like to see how Ponga slots back in at fullback, where he'd no longer be our only threat.

Of course, I'm not so keen to see the other aspects of his fullback play.

Pongas defence issues have been because the coach decided, stupidly, to have him defending in the centres where he has never played before. It was beyond geniused

If he was 3 in where he has his Backrower next to him and had to make far less defence decisions the damage would have been far less

Moving him to fullback solves very little imo and puts the team back too much from a continuity and cohesion pov

The elephant in the room is his inability & unwillingness to tackle. He`s not a scrawny little guy who should need
help to tackle, I doubt very much that others would be given that sort of latitude. Surely they can dig someone up
that can just work with him one on one for an extended period to try to correct it, technique & attitude combined.
That`s seems to be the theme at this joint, just ignore it for long enough & it will go away. O`Brien & Co act like
all of the players are the finished product when they get here & it`s why we never see improvement on all the flaws
in their games. Yet when they move on to greener pastures, magically they become decent first graders, I`ll bet quite
a few of our mob would go alright with a bit of decent coaching & a dose of accountability in their routine.

It’s probably too early to be speaking like this but there’s also a genuine concern Ponga doesn’t get any better. His head is a big thing to overcome.

Right this second, his best position is #14 or reserves. Even as a number 14 I’m not sure he’ll provide positive impact, rather cause a disruption to the team.

It really sucks. Newcastle can’t have nice things.

Yeah, very ordinary position to be in when you can make a semi convincing argument that ponga should be behind gamble and Miller

I’d be interested in being a fly on the wall at training and knowing how he is being trained to play in attack. My advice would be simple: spread the ball to the outside backs, if you see an opportunity, run, help Hastings with some of the long range kicking. That’s it. Stop with the long cut out balls. They look fancy but are rarely effective.

His last few seasons have been so injury hampered I’m genuinely not sure at the moment if it’s a Ponga issue, a coaching issue, or a lack of continuity. Probably a combination.
