Lol, this is politics. The media is the battle field where political wars are won and lost.

Of course its politics, but this isnt popularist politics.

This decision will come down to leverage:

- DSmith has control of 4 of the 5 potential major tenants, so he can refuse to play them in this stadium if it is in a bad location.

- But at the same time these teams need to play somewhere and if its a choice between a quasi-Suncorp in a bad location or a shitheap in a good one, this stadium owner can be confident of NRL games regardless of the location.

- NSW gov. have most of the money that will go into this, so if they dont like the way negotiations are going with DSmith they can just say "f*ck it, if you dont like it where we want it then we wont build..." (and where they want it will probably come down to electorates)

It doesnt matter what the public think of this; most people wont care if discussions say itll be in Liverpool or Penrith or wherever, "western sydney" will be enough to make them support it. The only reason to declare their first choice would be to appease people like me and you, but what we think about DSmith doesnt matter.

To keep his job, he just needs to keep the Commissioners happy...

Actually all politics is about popularity. Get the media fired up by the NRL about the need for a new stadium, get the fans disgruntled at the lack of political will to support their game, watch the pollies find the money. The Govt will spend money where they think it will earn them votes, that agenda is often driven by the media. Good luck getting the nsw govt to spend $350mill without this.

I wouldn't say this statement smacks of pragmatism, more lack of strategy or clear lobbying agenda
NRL chief executive Dave Smith said a world-class rugby league stadium was needed in Western Sydney but said the NRL had not yet “landed on a preferred option”.

it's going to be hard to make any sort of case for a 40 - 50,000 seat stadium when you have crowds of 6 and 7k.

argue all you want that more would turn up with a better venue but you have to display that people will, not that they might, possibly, if conditions are perfect, but not too perfect, not on (pick a timeslot) because traffic, jnr footy, public transport. too far from a fan base, it's too wet, not wet enough etc etc etc.

it's going to be a hard sell and all the other grounds need to be bulldozed.

but Canterbury want to play at Belmore FFS, LO needs to be fixed with a bomb, no work on parra, no Campbelltown, no Penrith, no Cronulla, No Kogarah. All of them are forced to either the new one, ANZ or Allianz. no games anywhere else.

Id argue thought that for most people right now it doesnt matter where the stadium is planned for; as long as it is western sydney it will get public support. Whether it is build in Liverpool, Penrith, Parramatta or Homebush this will be sold to the public as the "Western Sydney Stadium", a general enough title to make everyone in sydneys west believe they will benifit.

Im just guessing here, but im going to say DSmith does know what he wants, he just doesnt want to announce it publicly. If im right, then he could either say what he said or he could say "i know exactly what i want but im not telling you lot so f*ck off."

He absolutely needs to know what hes doing to run the league but just because he doesnt announce his plans to the papers...

The stadium can only exist between Homebush and Parramatta.

No one from Penrith is going to travel to Liverpool or Campbelltown.

No Tigers fan is going to travel to Penrith. Actually no other fans will travel to home games in Penrith.

The purpose of it being big is to share. The more use, greater economies of scale and potentially cheaper ticket, but definitely better ammenities.

To share it has to be somewhere where most fans will travel.

Redo Homebush, upgrade Parra, new one say around Clyde railyards?? Dunno

They should be looking at Suncorp size, be ambitious. And also make sure its a docklands deal, where the NRL own it after a while.

No Pennies fan will travel to Penrith Park (or whatever it is named) either.

If it is ever built it will be in Blacktown (Eastern Creek) or Liverpool/Fairfield.

What benefit do those serve, particularly servicing by railway lines, that Clyde or Parramatta doesn't?

Both Blacktown and Liverpool sites would be near the existing railway lines.

Parramatta stadium will never be significantly expanded beyond its current design due to Parramatta Park Trust restrictions. The current dropkick of a mayor would probably say different (he is the goose that proposed a tram line from Parramatta to Castle Hill costing multli billions) but Parramatta Council has no say in the matter.

Clyde is just too close to ANZ stadium and the olympic park district.

No one is saying the stadium has to be a certain distance away from Homebush, this is about a 35k+ purpose built stadium that is concentrating the funding that 4-5 other stadiums get as band aid fixes.

What that looks like is getting fans from Campbelltown, Parra, Bulldogs, Penrith and WSW in a location they can all access in an equitable manner.

The locks out the peripheries such as Penrith and Campbelltown, and more centralised would tend it around Parra, or slightly south.

I came from Liverpool, the walk from the station to woodward park is the same or longer than the walk to Parra stadium from parra station. It's also too much of a dterant for Tigers and Penrith fans distance wise.

Fairfield park is the only thing resembling a location in Fairfield, and not really suitable.

Parra would only needed expanded (I know that means rebuilt) top decks on the east and west stands, fitting in 7,000 more seats each.

A new modern stadium is much more than just extra capacity at parra though. Roofs that cover everyone, corporate suites that attract sponsors, decent food and toilet outlets etc etc.

Do they really need a stadium over 20k ?>>>

it isn't about those type of max sizes.

Gov is reluctant to spend big on a stadium that is used 10-12 times a year by a solitary NRl club.

it helps when usage extends to 25-30 times a year with an A-League club.

Shared between 4 NRL, usage becomes in the vicinity of 60 times a year.

When used 60 times a year, economies of scale can decrease price, as well as 2 of those teams playing at the same ground pushing the limits, hence meaning a bigger capacity ground.

They don't build 40,000 seats expecting 40,000 to be sold every game.

if it was hit 4 times a year that would be a satisfactory starting point.

35k roofed stadium at the Riff is a good start....
Lobby the gov to get parra stadium upgraded to something similar in a few years, then liverpool; tick them off one at a time...

Where is the money supposed to come from. The majority of people are not diehard NRL fans, or diehard fans of sport in general. Roads are crying out for funding, hospitals, schools, and people think they'll build a 10th stadium in a city where there is already a 80k, a 50k, and about 7 20k grounds. Please.

You're talking about the height of luxury spending when governments don't have money to afford the necessities.
