i don't particularly give a rats if i'm the only person in these forums who rates him - he has given illawarra, saints, nsw & australia great service
and the 1st state of origin from last year proves it ;-)

Ok - I'm a NSW fan who has been watching rugby league for quite a few years now!

I would like to commend Charlie Saab for his accurate analysis of Shaun Timmins game.

YES: the fact stands that NSW won Origin one last year and Timmo kicked the winning field goal.

Now that could mean a number of things:

1) Timmins was the difference, without him there NSW would never have won the game
2) Timmins was lucky to be selected - not being a 5/8 and not being able to pass the ball, but played a great game, heavily influenced the result, laid on classy plays and kicked the winning field goal to stamp his authority all over the game.
3) NSW boasted far superior players, and were never in danger of losing the series, even with a non-passing, slip off tackles, ineffective Shaun Timmins at 5/8. To his credit, he fluked a field-goal, which is probably something we'll never see him do again!!!

I think Charlie Saab would happily admit (ok, maybe not happily, but honestly) that NSW were a class ahead of Qld in last years Origin series, having too many good players to ever be in danger of losing.
But, what he is (correctly) saying is that NSW attempted to nullify this advantage by picking a ball-hog at 5/8 (just because he'd been there before). And, as a Qld fan, he would be thrilled for Timmins to be 5/8 again this series because he knows that ANY OTHER OPTION would make NSW a better team.

I happen to agree with this.

The argument has NOTHING TO DO with Origin one last year, and who deserved to win - OF COURSE NSW should have won (and easily), but because Timmins was there we barely squeaked home!

Have to agree craigy.

But one thing bothers me - the selctors surely know much more about football than I do - and they keep picking him!!! Sterling, Gould and Vautin know much more about football than I do and they keep wrapping him...

Now - I am not saying he's an awful player - clearlly he's not - but do they see something when they analyse the videos that I don't... a reason for the lack of passing, the laving the line and missing tackles...

Barrett will get the job if fit - and has played very well when picked before - Dragons fans must hate the idea though, because he'll get hurt and miss half the season!

Last year the guy was next to useless.... aned 1 big game doesn't prove anything!!

Has Nathan Hindmarsh only been a good player the last 12 months because until then he hadn't dominated at rep level???

Timmins is probably an average first grade footballer - I think the Dragons would be better off with him on their bench, and Creagh starting...

I don't know what Sterlo/ Fatty et al see in Timmins - maybe they are looking through the glasses of previous years where he excelled in the centres before playing well at lock. Sometimes it is hard to admit that a player is well past his prime and just doesn't have it anymore....

WTF are you on about?
WTF does my supporting timmins have to do with hindmarsh?
criticise timmins all you wish but don't try & twist my support of him into some warped argument regarding another player

thankyou old man craigy.

Will take issue with point 2 in that he didnt "lay on classy plays"
The only plays he made were for himself.
NSW were too good for QLD last yr. We shall see this yr with a fit Lockyer and a much better Nth QLD team to choose players from. (hopefully will help the broncos at seasons end with less players playing!)
Chances are Timmo will be picked again as i dont see Barrett fit at origin time (he rarely is)

no argument there - he is past his prime
being selected is not his fault - would you reject it?

Surely Timmins is not in the frame this year???

Barrett, Hill and even Anasta or Campbell would be better options at 5/8...

At lock, Waterhouse (to me) looks a lock, and beyond that there are plenty of hardworking backrowers that offer more than Timmins - hell, if it has to be a Dragon, even Thompson is a better option

Timmo has retired from rep football but you never know. Langer made more comebacks than lazarus, so timmins could follow suit.
Timmins vs Lockyer....please!

I outplayed daley and fittler when i played them. Yeah, what about the other 22 games you played!

and i said that is not how you look at a game.
Wingers on wingers yes, but 5/8s dont really match up against each other. They very very rarely come into contact with each other.

but now you post

yes he scored a try and kicked a field goal. Qld still scored 2 tries to one in that game in case you have forgotten.
bwaaaaah hahahahahahahaha!
that's a pretty weak effort charlie ;-)
who won that game?
would you be unhappy if your team scored less tries but still won?
surely tonie carroll could have kicked a field goal to win it ;-)

In that particular game, Shaun Timmins was made to look foolish in defence on several occasions by Scott Prince. Personally I thought he had a dreadful game, one of the worst five eighths performances I've witnessed, only to be hero worshipped for that field goal.

Hey - I wasn't trying to twist anything into an argument for anyone - just using a comparison.

In your original post (quoted) you said that the SofO1 proves that Timmins should be rated.

I'm saying it proves nothing (even if he did play well) - and Hindmarsh was my poster boy: for years he has been one of the most outstanding players in the competition - week in, week out. But for some reason he was overlooked for selection following a perception that he didn't play well in big games - last year he put that criticism to bed. Now does that mean he has only been a good player for 1 year, or for 5 years?

One or two games of rep footy should never be a determining factor as to a players ability. That is my point!

Just because Timmins fired himself up for SofO1 last year doesn't mean he is still an Origin class player.

I happen to agree with 'Saab - and if I were a Qld supporter I would want Timmins selected at 5/8 for the Blues. In much the same way that I, a NSW supporter, hope that Tony Carroll is picked at lock, or Paul Bowman at centre, or Daniel Wagon at 5/8 for the Maroons. Their selection means a better player misses out and makes the win for the Blues all the more likely!!!
