Hi guys, first post here so just wanted to introduce myself.
*
Been a dragons fan since 1983 and have really enjoyed the last 3 years where weve had great success.
*
Have been a long time reader in these forums and now feel like I want to contribute in the various discussions.
*
One of the things I have noticed the last 3 years is a preoccupation with versatile players as opposed to specialists. Sure, its great to have players that can play a number of positions to plug a hole, but too many of these types of players can be detrimental as well. The players specifically that I am talking about are Prior, Scott and Young. Primarily these guys are obviously back rowers but have filled a number of positions over the years.
*
The point is
does anyone think it strange that a guy like Prior has played both prop and centre? Or that we have seemingly have no problem putting Scott in the centres as well as the second row. Or Young to hooker?
*
When I think of forwards, I think of power players who are big, aggressive, tackle all day, bend the line and dont get dominated in the ruck (Immediately, I think of players like Sam Burgess, Paul Gallen, Nathan Hindmarsh). Dont really see Scott, Prior and Young having these attributes. Why I rejoice in the emergence of young De Belin, An out and out forward who wont take a backward step.
*
When I think of outside backs, I think of players who are speedy and evasive and can create opportunities (I think of Michael Jennings, Gaz when we was with us, Josh Morris etc). Scott and Prior in the backs?? Explains why we struggle to score points sometimes.
*
All the great hookers in the comp, speedy and creative (Smith, Ennis and Farrah). Does Young have these skills?
*
Our preoccupation with putting players out of position, Prior and Scott in the backs, Young at hooker, Stanley at Fullback etc* presents problems which have been discussed many times in these forums.
*
Versatility is great to a degree, but it can cause problems too.
