The NRL must consider a blanket alcohol ban on every player contracted to its clubs.

Draconian.

You bet.

But what more can be done?

You can commission studies, run work shops, appoint mentors but none of it can stop the effects of binge drinking.

Remove alcohol, remove most of the problems.

Well banning things before has never solved anything, just pushes it underground.

You'll have players with the kids gettin on the piss under the bridge and behind the bike sheds.

This subject is about the use of alcohol by players and the consequences of binge drinking.

It is unfortunate but clear that many players in our game can't handle their grog.

If those blokes were drinking lemon squash last night 12 of them wouldn't have been fined a total of $50,000 for breaking their 3am curfew (As reported on Sky news)

If you ban grog, players will be breaking rules just about every weekend, or switching to a code that allows them to drink. They'd probably challenge it in an industrial relations court too.

I wonder how Ricketson, Minicheillo and co would take it? Probably the same way they did Ricketsons very public pledge, they'd get pissed to celebrate it

And it was those actions that got said player sacked.

I don't think an alchohol ban will work, the Eels have one yes and have no off field incidents to date, but then they don't seem to do much on it either  . Seriously though, these are grown men we are talking about here, clubs and the NRL need to give heavy fines to these guys, tear up contracts ect and lets see if it keeps happening. Right now there are no real serious punishments so no need to behave.

I actually agree with KFC.

A total abstinance of alcohol for every player registered with the N.R.L. from the trial rounds, right until the Ref blows the full-time whistle on Grand Final Night.

Works for A.F.L. why not for us?

that cant be possible...

I can't confirm this, but this is what I've been told by friends who are A.F.L. fans.

KFC is 200% correct. You don't have to take it out all together, but a player must never be allowed to pass 3 to 4 beers.

Never.

Unfortunately nospam49 they will never wake up to themselves.

It's been proven time and time again.

And I'm not suggesting for a minute that it's one or two clubs with the problem, it's all of them.

As for treating them like grown men, they doesn't seem to work either. Just look at the immature way they carry on.

Banning alcohol will never happen, I know that, but the NRL needs to do something.

Perhaps rather than spending a million bucks on a study into the treatment of women they should spend the money on a responsible drinking program.

And in case your wondering I'm no prude, but our game can't afford to keep shooting itself in the foot.

I think the Knights and NRL have taken a step in the right direction with the current incident, and have set a standard that other clubs will have to meet or better when dealing with a situation like this.

It's all about penalties, hows many players do people think will continue to do things like this if it means they lose contracts, large chunks of money ect.

I would have thought that after Coffs Harbour.

I would have thought that after the 04 State of Origin.

But nothing's changed.

What were the penalties for those incidents? Were there any at all? Gasnier, Mini and Wing got dumped for a week, don't know what they got fined if at all. Slaps on the wrist, missing out on a game against much lower teams on the ladder, I'm sure that taught them.

Harsher penalties is all thats needed.

How many teams had the shit scared out of them after the Dogs salary cap scandal and with what happened to them? 14 I'd say, same needs to be done here. The NRL needs to impliment HEAVY fines for clubs, HEAVY fines and suspesions for players. Lets see the NRL scare this shit out every single player in the NRL with the next incident.
