Dymatize make great products , the iso100 is an excellent lean 0 carb,0 sugar product , almost pure protein and tastes great in water.

Protein Direct online is good and cheap, Bulk Nutrients is cheaper but not as good tasting.

Can get WPC and WPI, the banana tastes pretty good in milkor water, just ordered some Vanilla too to give it a try.

Question: I am a skinny, weak, athletic, uber fast metabolism 22 year old. Think touch football player.

I have tried protein powers previously, but have not been successful.

Which one would best with goal of weight gain?

I've noticed that the cheap ones seem to good. They has lots of carbs and fat (I have no idea if this is correct)

If you're looking bulk up you'll need a good mass gainer, and you're right they are going to be packed with carbs, but good ones won't be high in fats or sugars at all. My brother has used ON Pro Complex Gainer and Elite Mass Gainer with good results. Bit pricier, but big servings packed with protein and carbs, definately what you need if you're looking to pack some size on, and can be used as a meal replacement

I dont know how cheap/expensive it is comparatively but some others from which dogslife has mentioned are Max's or BSN

From past experience I tend to steer clear of any of the Australian brands, and BSN for that matter. BSN is expensive as f**k and the products are really not worth it, not quite in the same category as Muscle Tech, but close. BSN= Bullshit nutrition. Dymatize and ON make great products, and if you're looking for something cheaper, anything sourced from NZ is great

I'm on the BSC products ATM, getting them at half the R.R.P. Few of my mates (NYC footballers) swear by them

Whats with everyone taking supplements these days?

Are they just purely to add protein and/or carbs to the diet? If so, is it really that hard to get the extra from a change in diet instead?

I've been eating for weight loss for the past 6 months and am only a few weeks away from my goal weight so will be starting on the weights soon. Looking to add some size but mainly looking to just get very toned. People tell me I should start taking supplements when I start doing weights but its always seemed like a bit of a con to me.

I don't eat meat and have a ridiculous training schedule at the moment. Protein powder is basically the only way I can ensure I get enough protein for my muscles to recover.

But yeah generally speaking people don't need supplements at all if they have a well balanced diet, the industry is full of way too much bullshit.

I would definately recommend a protein shake after a weights session if nothing else. Protein in a powdered form holds certain benefits namely convience and rate of absorption. When weight training they say you've got a 30min window when you're body needs the protein most to fuel your muscles. A shake will allow your body to breakdown and absorb the protein alot quicker and it's also alot more convenient

It's recommended that you eat roughly 1-1.5g of protein per lbs bodyweight if you've commenced weight training. Most people will find that very difficult to achieve especially when you've got work etc. Without protein shake i'd be very lucky to get anywhere near that tbh. Although you're right in that the prices are a definite scam

I have protein shakes for the reason aqua mentioned. I don't really want to lug a steak into the gym with me, much more convenient to have a shake.

As long as it doesn't become too big a part of your diet, there's nothing wrong with it. But healthy food should always be your staple, there's more to food than macros.

Actually chook a lot of new studies suggest the 1-1.5 grams per lbs of body weight thing is a myth and that the aim should be about 1 gram per kilo of body weight and 1-2 if you have an extremely vigorous weight training regime.

Ye i've heard that some studies have refuted those claims and again this probably goes back to the companies wanting the extra $$$

But then again, the results speak for themselves. All the bodybuilders who have large muscle mass do one thing that stands out from the rest - they are very strict with their diet, and eat a hell of a lot of meat and protein in comparison to other people. I think that says enough really.

I still aim for at least 1g per pound body weight just to be safe.

I go off the 1g per pound theory especially on training days, though I don't often reach my target (I'm roughly 205 pounds, and on training days I'll usually do about 180-190g between 6-7 meals, abit less on my days off). For me its about keeping my body fueled and keeping my metabolism high so it means eating very regularly. When you're trying to do 7 meals its hard to eat 7 solid meals (in terms of practicality and digestion), so I'll usually do 4-5 solid meals coupled with shakes, tuna, or some lentils and nuts

Personally, I keep my tub of WPI at work. If I don't pack enough food (or forget) for the day, then I have something to fall back on. It's also good if I've been bike riding + gym and need something quick before I open my shop.
