If that's the case then fair enough...

All you can do ask that they do what they are contractually obliged to do... If they do that then you can't complain...

Well I'm not 100% sure... But I don't think the NRL held the CEO's family hostage in order to get them to agree to it...

Did clubs have a choice whether to participate? I have no idea but I would think the NRL wouldn't be keen on having only some the clubs there.

penrith also have a load of first graders coming back from major injury and the nines is not the type of game you want them coming back to

Nobody should be punished. It's a bit of fun in February. The human body can only take so much before it breaks down. They can't play all year long. After more and more rep footy at the end of the season, an expanded world club challenge and now this at the start of the season something has to give.

DWZ & Moylan... Neither of them played a minute of the 4 Nations...

Unless they are injured(and they could be as I know DWZ withdrew because of injury) why couldn't they play in the tournament??
As you mentioned, DWZ was injured and while Moylan didn't play a minute of the 4 Nations, he was away training with the team and as a resut his pre-season training didn't commence until this year.

At the most, the four nations guys have 4 weeks of pre-season training. If 4 weeks was enough to be ready to play football, teams would start training 4 weeks before the season starts and reduce the risk at having more injured players in pre-season training (and trials). But clearly it's not, an especially not for a couple of kids like Moylan who has only played one full season of first grade, and DWZ who hasn't even played half a season yet.

Every player has a legitimate reason for not playing. Roosters didn't select any of their four nations players, but nobody has an issue with that as they still have some other quality players available for selection.

I understand teams being frustrated that some sides are far weaker then others. But look at how the Panthers season went last year, and look at all the injuries suffered since then. I think they're well within their rights to take precautions this year to keep their best players on the field.

Sure that's part of it but testing who is and isn't up to fitness for the regular is a big part of it too. I can guarantee you that if the Nines highlights to a coach some players that may be down on fitness or even rusty on some basic skills he's going to be bloody happy it was identified now rather than in a 20 minute run in a trial two weeks before the season starts when there isn't enough time left to fix the problem.

Do you seriously believe that in this day and age of sports science that a coach would be unaware of which players are lacking fitness? I can 100% promise you that no coach will be using the 9's as a fitness test of their players.

Its Mickey Mouse footy. Great to watch but not much more really.

If a club wants to stack their team then good luck to them. They will likely get the chockies.

City/Country has been a farce for 15 years at least and that is meant to be a "legit" game.

Just enjoy the fact there's some footy on.

Oh, and go Manly!! :D

They only need to play for a few minutes ffs, not like we are asking them to run a marathon pre season!

If they run a star player for 2 minutes to meet the rules is that not just bullshit anyway?

If every club picked superstars and everyone knew they weren't really playing, then what's the point?

Its a no win situation unfortunately.

You chuck them on for 3-4 minutes each half. Crowds happy, sponsors happy, tv happy and risk is minimal. If clubs follow melbourne a lead this will be gone in 5 years. Rl fans aren't mugs and won't pay hundred bucks to watch kids running around.

Or you don't play under done players this increasing the chance of injuries. Who cares about a 9's tournament.

That's it. Someone underdone is more likely to do a hammy then someone fit. 4 weeks out from the season plenty of players aren't right to go yet.

Who here won't watch the Nines if elite 80 minute players are withdrawn

How many spectators that don't give a f**k about names but care about the possibility of previously harnessed talent being given a free reign to thrill them do you need

I would go to the game if I could afford it even if contracted top grade players were banned and the comp was made of a mixture of retired and trial players

Didn't think I would every type this.

But I 110% agree with Pops.

Kiwis turn up in droves to watch their "native" code play 7's with the biggest bunch of no-names and non-stars since the last season of Dancing with the Stars.

Exactly, and these coaches especially live and die by results. They can't have their star players doing an injury right before the season. If it happens in a trial so be it, but if it happens in a 9's tournament....I bet they wouldn't be thrilled!

Agree with Pops sentiment as well. The 9's could turn into an interesting tournament and NRL clubs could choose to play or not, as could other clubs. 9's also makes more sense for the national youth cup than the awful attempt at league that the U20's became.
