Punishment for poor nines squads

Penrith has now received their punishment for sending a rubbish squad. Get spanked and don't win hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Looking at the squads being named I agree. I think teams are barely thinking about the concept because tactics, players and unique skills used in the game are just not suited.

Plus Cherrington would probably be a better 9's player than Farah

that's the thing that i dont get. People want big names, but big names often dont actually translate to this format.

Also, there doesnt seem to be much correlation between those teams who have big names and success.

You catch more flies with honey than with sugar.
See my idea in the main forum on how to ensure squads are beefed up adequately.

Would you have said that the sharks sent over their best possible squad?? Not really.

Any stats men out there want to work how many nrl games each 9's squad had. I'm willing to wager that Souths and Cronulla were at the lower end.

And winning zero new fans and just basically weakening (to a very small extent, of course) the "value" of the brand.

Watching the roosters and Broncos stacked with names play so crap I am starting to think having the right style of player is more important than having stars!

Didnt watch much of it at all, but from what I have seen players with a combination of speed, strength and footwork excel at this, being able to beat a defender and break a tackle seems more important than ballplaying and organisation.

If I was picking a squad i would pick mostly outside backs and mobile backrowers.

Yeah, there should be a minimum of the high earners playing in the NRL Nines, at the moment it's NOT the NRL 9's it's the U20's, DCN Cup ;) QLD Cup plus a few NRL players Nines.

DNC - De Cymru Newydd (New South Wales) Ha.

Yeh, nah . . . there should be a limited numbers of high earners so more players are given a chance to show they can play NRL

De Cymru Newydd should have been, sorry, feeling tired and trying to watch North QLD v Brissy at the same time, and now watching some players spit onto the floor again in the changing rooms during half-time, not a fan of that.

I don't know what the obsession most people have with the star players. They were not the highlight of the weekend.

Just skew the prize money more towards the GF/Semi finalists, rather than everyone getting a win.

I think it was $100k for the round robin losers. Remove that and include it in the GF pay day and watch all teams enter their top teams (whether that is their regular FG team or not is debatable though as 20/20 cricket has shown)

Well if that's the case then we'll see them playing the "NRL" 9's out of Shark Park then, in the not so distant future.

Logic has failed you, sooner they drop the 'NRL Nines' and make it the 'Rugby League Nines' the sooner we can get on with supporting the search for new talent . . . Kiwis wouldn't give a shit who plays against the Warriors and the Warriors will never desert a chance to promote the game at home

nope. Our team didn't take anyone Davis, Sopoaga and Jay especially were standouts for us. With stars they are watching. The NRL clubs need to be there but they are the drawcards not the players

The reason for 9's and 7's for me is to see the stars play with more space and have the ball more often to see what they will do.

I remember the first thing they said in 2013 was that the stars wud be playing at the NRL 9's. And I'm sure they had B Slatur showing off the Melbun kit 4 the 9's this yr, so I tuned in to see him, he didn't even show up!

And I want to see some of the NRL stars make a monkey of themselves in the 9's as it doesn't suit them, like Cam Smith. I'm not sure that Thurston wud go 2 well in the 9's either. So, I want to see how the stars wud go.
