NRL boss Dave Smith last night finally lost his patience with ASADA after the agency called off interviews with Sharks players at short notice.

Cronulla players were also fuming last night after ASADA called off their interviews, which were to begin today, condemning the team to several more weeks of uncertainty.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that lawyers contacted the 10 players wanted for interview around lunchtime yesterday to inform them of the delay - less than 24 hours before the first meeting was scheduled.

The delay tipped Smith over the edge, with the NRL boss planning to take it up with the anti-doping authority today.

"It's been three months," Smith said. "It's just not good enough to cancel interviews at this point.

"ASADA should get on with it and I'll be making that clear."

It's understood ASADA needs additional time to gather evidence and the interviews now won't commence for at least another fortnight.

The delay ensures that there will be several more weeks of uncertainty around the club.

A source close to the players last night revealed their frustration.

"This has now basically screwed their season," the source said.

"They've already been waiting a month since receiving the interview notices, and now ASADA suddenly wants more time.

"It might be another two or three weeks until anyone is interviewed, and then that will take a few weeks.

"Then it will take another few weeks for ASADA to decide what to do. That's a long time to leave the players hanging.

"It's just not good enough."

Sharks general manager Steve Noyce confirmed the delay, expressing his frustration on behalf of the coaching staff, who had even changed training schedules to accommodate the interviews over the coming fortnight.

"I said to the players the end of the process will come quicker once they start the formal part of the process," Noyce said.

"We made ourselves available for interviews. We discussed the preparation required and making sure that we assisted in any way we can.

"Training times were also altered.

"So it's certainly frustrating to learn that they've been called off."

According to ASADA's original timeline, the interviews were to be completed early next month.

Now they have little chance of beginning then, with legal argument about the players' obligations the initial reason for the delay.

But once the players had been assured they were not required to give incriminating evidence, the interviews were set to take place quickly, starting with Cronulla.

The NRL was only made aware of the change late yesterday, with Smith speaking of his expectation for interviews to begin this week at the announcement of major changes to the NRL.

"We've always made it clear that we wanted the investigation to be completed as soon as possible," an NRL spokesman said.

Its just plain ridiculous now.

They probably want to interview the f**kwit speed dealer that sought his 15 minutes of fame the other night.

I'd like to see the cost of this process - didnt they hire an extra 10 people to deal with this.

What a waste of money.

Lol they only released a report because they were concerned football players may die, despite it supposedly going on for sometime without anyone croaking.

Thats some good fertiliser

A recurring theme they have served up from the start.

Can they back up this apprehension with facts that justify suddenly being spurred into action?

Lets us see evidence of this trail of carnage littered with the corpses of our young athletes who, alas, are allegedly so easily led astray by these evil criminal cartels.

And ASADA lingers on and on. Honest John wanted people to feel relaxed and comfortable......it's almost the exact opposite under the Red Terror.
Keep on singing, Carole.

I agree with ACC CEO John Lawler when he said that he would prefer to be out
explaining why he released the ACC report, as opposed to explaining to a coroner

about why he didn't act while knowing that athletes were at risk.

And yet the process is delayed for two weeks!

How many grief stricken family members will be crying out for an explanation because the wheels of justice are moving so agonisingly slow?

We were told it's a matter and life and death so tell em to pull their fingers out you imbecile!

I know this has beend ifficult for sportsf ans.B ut, my message is that the only
reputations that are damaged by the ACC report are of those athletes and support
personnel who have cheated through doping.
Oh really?

This is true, we could have several more deaths of nrl players on top of the scores already.

So at the start it was a big presser ... australian sport full of drug cheats and match fixers.

Have we heard anything about the matches that were fixed yet.

individuals should be presumed innocent until
proven guilty.
But in the mean time in the absence of anything remotely resembling criminal charges lets make a grandiose sweeping statement about alleged wholesale corrupt practices involving Australian sport in general thereby bringing shame upon the whole country. Is this how law enforcement is supposed to work?

They have centred a lot of their attention on our club so are we to believe a number of our players have had their wellbeing placed on a precipice only to be dragged back from the edge by Ms Lundy and co?

Do we owe her a debt of gratitude for saving their lives from imminent life threatening danger?

The life and death bit is a tad over the top but that said they probably don't need an investigation and scalps etc to interrupt the process and stop the practice. Think about the reverse situation. If you were after a drug operation and wanted to catch them red handed the last thing you would do is stick your head up and say we're looking for you. Why...because they would go to ground and stop production albeit temporarily. So if you wanted to stop the operation quickly, as ASADA claim, without waiting for the big scalp you would do exactly what they did.

The cost of the investigation now needs to be detailed, the government would have had a budget, knowing them totally wrong.

They are using borrowed money to run an investigation for nothing, what needs to happen is for ASADA to be investigated, but that wont happen till after September 14th
