Question about the crowds

Why is it that the Broncos can attract very high crowds, yet Sydney clubs like Bulldogs, Wests Tigers and South Sydney that play games at Telstra Stadium (about 1.5x the capacity of Suncorp) can't attract high crowds on the same basis that the Broncos do? Like, what makes the Broncos so much more popular than the Sydney sides?

Also, why did the Broncos move from Suncorp Stadium to ANZ Stadium, and then back to Suncorp Stadium? They averaged 43,000 in their first season at ANZ Stadium in 1993 and apparently, ANZ was a much worse rugby league venue than Suncorp (those who've attended games at both ANZ and Suncorp should know the answer). However, by 2002/2003, that number had decreased quite substantially.

Finally, will they increase the capacity of Suncorp in the future? I'd say it should be increased to 60,000.

There is one Brisbane team.

There are 9 Sydney teams.

Suncorp will not get bigger for at least 25 years.

Why did the Broncos move? Lang Park was upgraded.

But, do you think the same would happen if there was only one team in Sydney? Do you think crowds close to capacity would turn up to Telstra Stadium or Aussie Stadium if there was only one Sydney team?

weather is also a factor...so many night Sydney games, honestly how cold has it been

and yes if there was only one Sydney team it would at least triple the average of Sydney crowds

No. It will never happen. Because believe it or not, the NRL is the result of the popularity, progress, quality and forward-thinking nature of the once Sydney Competition, then NSWRL, then ARL. No other suburban competition has come close. The Brisbane comp has developed into a competition sub-standard to the 2nd tier competition in NSW. Thus they have their own team to compete against 'ours'.

The tribalistic roots of the Sydney teams are the glue that hold the NRL together. All those other supporters can whinge about whatever they want, throw the term 'Sydney centric' around, but face it, without the Sydney teams this comp would be nothing.

Why don't more people go to NRL games in Sydney??

Well off the top of my head......

- Sydney is a bitch of a place to get around
- Ticket prices maybe high for the average person or to take the family to
- The NRL have been content with doing nothing about this issue for years
- Telstra stadium is a terrible venue to watch footy at
- Not enough advertising of footy in general
- News Ltd wants you to watch the matches on pay tv

Not if clubs were cut to get to one team.

If you culled 8 of the 9 Sydney clubs those supporters would not necessarily continue to support rugby league by cheering for the one remaining club.

However, theoretically if all the Sydney clubs were merged into one super club and all the fans of the previous 9 clubs continued to support the super club then yes you would see much bigger Sydney crowds.

Its not just the NRL's fault. Its actually primarily the clubs fault. In Sydney the clubs have basically never had to put any effort into marketing the teams at grass roots level and trying to build a supporter base. They have this mentality that is essentially 'support our team because geographical, we represent you'. Thus largely fans were treated with contempts and fans paid the clubs back by becoming the ultimate 'fair weather fans'. The Clubs didn't need to worry about the fan base largely because they only saw fans as potential ticket sales and they already were getting the money the needed through the leagues clubs, poker machines and jersey sponsorship. Most of these clubs still have a similar mentality. Although they seem to be starting to get the picture. If you look at the AFL system, the clubs live and die of ticket sales and in particular membership/season ticket package. But this system also has a flow on effect creating additional revenue streams like merchandising. The Bronco's embraced these methods and thats why they have such a large following.

Hard to say because people support who they support for many reasons but there would be bigger crowds if they had less NSW teams not sure if it would be to capacity.

In honest truth Sydneysiders are not great supporters, don't just look at RL here take for instance Sydney FC they where much better than everyone else in season 1 but hardly got crowds over 16K. Yet Melbourne who dominated season 2 had an average attendance closer to 30K. The sort of numbers all clubs would love with the exception of the AFL.

Fact 2 what sort of crowds turn out to premier League matches? are they any bigger than crowds at the QC matches?

Sydneysiders don't even do themselves justice at the finals, it's never until GF time that we see a sellout; don't argue it's the truth.

Why does a club with Parra's suposed support play finals at Parra stadium when they should be filling telstra? it's nothing to do with cost as the people of Sydney are suposed to be doing it alright and no one makes you by the food inside the ground, it's a matter or people not being passionate.

Everything about the idea of sydney having 9 rl teams is wrong.

Its disgusting.

4 million people and about 60,000 or less attendees each weekend.

They never supported the idea of building a fan-base because they never needed the fans money - it even sounds like sydney clubs dont WANT fans.

Heck, every time richmond meet collingwood or essendon, its 80,000+ at the mcg no matter how each team are doing.

Its disgusting.

Do you people know anything about manchester United football club.

That club WANTS FANS.

IT WANTS A WORLD OF FANS.

They have supporters all across the globe.

The fans are that club.

It appears that no matter what sport you talk about, every one has fans more passionate about their game than sydneysiders are about league.

The city does not deserve 9 teams, it cant handle 9 teams, and an emphasis must be on fan support when they do cut teams from sydney.

And i hope they eventually cut a LOT of teams.

I wish there was a change of culture at least.

20 years ago teams were getting 80K to their whole home season.. in 1983, Wests drew 42,000 for a 12 game home schedule, so we've come a way from that anyway.

Sydney's total lack of transport to Telstra and SFS is a major reason why people don't go to theses grounds. Having to catch 2 modes of transport, be it 2 train trips or a train and bus combo deters a lot of fans from attending these grounds. The lack of foresight by nearly every state Govt. since federation is hard to understand.

Pot calling the kettle black. 3 million people in south east queensland and only two teams. Suncorp and Carrara should be sold out years in advance.

You live in a city of 4 million people thats 15 times larger than Paris and your complaining about having to use two modes of transport and/or having to change trains?

God give me strength.
