But after V’landys ridiculed AFL still grappling with the idea of bubbles over the weekend, AFL great Garry Lyon hit back at the NRL, saying the league won’t miss the hip pocket benefits of having crowds.

“That’s alright, push-ahead Pete is on a nice wave of momentum at the moment. I don’t think they’ll miss the crowds much either by the way given not many turn up,” Lyon said on his SEN Breakfast in a discussion with former Essendon skipper Tim Watson

It always makes me laugh how AFL carry on about how they are national and say league is just a 2 state game. Just about all of WA, SA and the NT is uninhabited. More people live in Sydney then in those states all put together. AFL and League popularity in the population would just about be 50/50.

What’s going on with the digital arm. Did 9/Foxtel manage to gain control, kill it or does it continue?

Took this from an article written by Roy Masters about a month ago:

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/two-bi...ital-arm-grant-warns-nrl-20200503-p54pcb.html

That date 2027 seems interesting, I wonder what Pete has done or plans to do with the first and last rights, no wonder he did a deal with Fox until the end of 2027.

we didn’t even get to the point of worrying about first and last rights as he has signed another 5 years without going to market. We literally just handed Fox first and last rights in one go.

Gambling giant Betfair has struck an 11th hour deal with the NRL to allow punters to bet against each other for the season reboot, but not before forecasting turnover will drop due to its commission being “four times more expensive than the AFL”.

Having refused to sign an integrity agreement with the NRL before the opening two rounds in protest at increased product fees, Betfair announced on Monday night it had finally reached agreement with the code.

A number of other bookmakers reluctantly signed deals in order for them to offer wagering on NRL matches before the start of the season, which was ultimately suspended after the second round due to COVID-19.

Betfair said it will lift its market base rate from six per cent last year to 10 per cent this year, stressing its take out on AFL matches in 2020 would only be 2.5 per cent.

“We applaud the NRL for the incredible work that has gone on during lockdown to secure the NRL’s future and to bring the season back to its fans at the earliest moment possible,” Betfair Australia chief executive Tim Moore-Barton said.

“Unfortunately, their product fee model singles out high volume, low margin operators such as a betting exchange.

“If we kept the commission we charge customers flat on last year we would now be paying over two thirds of our revenue in product fees – and that’s before other operating costs and taxes (including point of consumption tax) – therefore we have made the difficult decision to increase our commission on NRL to 10 per cent.

“The Betfair exchange appeals to customers that want better odds, that want to trade and to winners that can’t get on with fixed odds bookies – and unfortunately when we are forced to increase our commission rates turnover from these customers drops, or stops completely, which is no good for punters, for Betfair or for the NRL.”

The code has already implemented a super tax on bookmakers to offer betting on all finals and Origin matches, some of the biggest wagering events in Australia.

Betfair insiders argue the NRL will be the most expensive product they offer globally.

“In comparison customers should be aware that our MBR on the 2020 AFL season is 2.5 per cent,” the company said in a statement. “The NRL will be four times more expensive.”

V’landys has been at odds with Betfair for years over the gambling taxes levied on the exchange by Racing NSW, which took the international giant all the way to the High Court in the protracted race fields fees case it won to secure the financial platform for the industry.

I don't get the bitterness from these non thinkers.

Common sense would dictate they they at least try and learn, or work with, the progress being shown by the NRL, so they can benefit from it.

It all just seems rather childish and immature for mine.

this is brilliant, also probabaly an indication of the international appeal of the NRL being significantly higher than that of the AFL for the overseas punters

How do you watch your favourite shows on what device?

I used to have Foxtel, I cancelled last year. Not only for NRL but for docos, history, adventure and classical movies.
I have a decent library of DVDs,so if there is not anything worthwhile on TV I have a shot at them.I even have on DVD the Shark's 2016 Grand Final win, that's worth replaying each week.
Doing more reading than before, can string more than two words together now:DInterested in China v Taiwan ,think that's where the next sh*t will hit the fan.

This means from next year I'll watch on FTA and attend more local NRL games than I have recently. So no other devices with apps that I use.Although have been watching some free you tube movies of late.
So my club will be getting more money out of me than at present, and I will continue buying merchandise.
If ch9 goes down the tube, I won't be wearing black.

Powerhouse Peter has lead the country in coming out the other end of a virus lockdown.

Probably eats away at his haters. The truth usually does.

Who cares what VFL does....

Not Pete.

Ultimately, our game needed a leader who didn't buy into the status quo. For too long we've had leaders who pandered to the very people and organisation which cannibalise our sport.

PVL comes along and finds solutions, rattles the cage and stands up for the game using his experience and sheer business brawn to realign expectations and get shit moving. Both internally and externally.

He will always be open to criticism from the outsiders because hes doing what they've been too afraid to do.

At the end of the day, he's not sitting idle and he's prepared to sink or swim. His decisions reflect that.

Credit to him.
