The coach needs to take some responsibility for so many missed tackles each week. Why have a bunch of weak defenders next to each other for 8 rounds and not make an effort to fix it?

Hiku and Soward shouldn't defend anywhere near each other. Two weak defenders like that is just leaving that edge being torn to shreds each week.hiku needs to go wing as on the other edge he would just ve near Cartwright who misses a lot of tackles also. Hiku on the wing outside of Whare for mine.

The scary thing is that we sit 13th on total tackles made (2535). So it's not as if the missed tackles simply represent more time tackling.

2016:
Total: 2535 (13th)
Missed: 308 (1st)
12%

2015:
Total: 8245 (8th)
Missed: 774 (2nd)
9.4%

2014:
Total: 8270 (4th)
Missed: 715 (2nd)
8.6%

So it's not unique to this year, but it's getting worse.

Soward made 7 tackles missing 4. Not great by any means. But to put it in perspective, Moylan made 7 tackles, missed 4. But I do agree that if a good defender was next to Soward, the problem of our defense down that side would be relieved to some extent.

Where does that leave DWZ/Mansour though? Moylan isnt moving into the halves anytime soon
Well we know Hiku cant be dropped so it leaves us with either:

Fb - DWZ
Lw: Mansour
Lc: Blake
Rc: Whare
RW: Hiku
Halves: Moylan and Soward

Fb: Moylan
Lw: Mansour
LC: DWZ
RC: Whare
RW: Hiku

I think the best balanced side is the first one. The second may not be an improvement defensively. But Hiku paired up with Whare wouldn't be a liability at all IMO and Whare would provide a lot of opportunities for Hiku and he is a quality finisher.

I really want to see Hiku ourside of Whare. Regardless of what changes happen on the left for it. Blakes the likely guy to be cut out. But the TMM injury opens up the possibility of Moylan to halves and Blake keeping his spot if fit.

With the rep weekend rest after this one it sure would be tempting to rest up segs and whare. the injury to tmm though has stuffed that.

I think Merrin going to prop and Taylor coming back into look is the way to go now. Yeo, Carty and Taylor can all play 80 with Peach and even Latu giving them a spell out wide if needed.

RCG, Seg, Merrin, Yeo, Cartwright, Taylor, Peachey, Latu, JFH, Mckendry/Latimore/Matagi/Wallace

Agree, but it won't happen ET is on the outer.

Where's the insult about going to watch them get smashed?

Be interesting to see if we make the average margin for the year even smaller with a 3 point or less game. We're missing a draw... that would cut the average down a bit.

Our for and against makes for interesting reading.

No surprises with our attack scoring only 149 points. 12th on the ladder. We still seem at a loss on what to do when we get into the opposition 20 meter area.

Our defense is 8th on the ladder, conceding only 161 points. Which considering the number of missed tackles the team is making is interesting. Maybe the fact that some of the teams have had big scores put on them make us look better than we are. Or maybe we scramble well in defense (stats dont show everything).

Too much is being made of the 'missed tackles' in my opinion. There are 'misses' and there are real 'misses'.

The misses that meant most on the weekend were the one's that led directly to the three Sharks tries. Deadset Chad Townsend must have thought all his Xmas's came at once given he has never made a line break in his life before the weekend.

The Sharks missed tackles meant nothing in the scheme of things, we gained an extra couple of metres.

You do, of course, have to look at what teams have been played. We have played 6 of the top 8, 5 of the top six and also the 9th best team. We have only played one team below us on the ladder: Roosters. I think our points conceded are pretty good all things considered.

We have played 4 of the 5 teams with the best defence. To understand why we miss more tackles yet haven't been flogged, we need more data points. Do we commit more people to the tackle resulting in one player missing but the others get them? In other words with four in a tackle instead of 3, the missed tackles don't lead to tries because we have 3 in every tackle. How many line breaks do we concede? How many long range tries do we concede? Is our line speed so fast our first tackler puts a player off balance for the other players, a missed tackle but effective.

Is our missed tackle rate higher because we at least have a go at tackling? If you let someone stroll though a gap and don't attempt a tackle, your stats look better. We always try to stop them.

Definitely very good questions.

Sometimes I wonder if the coaching staff look at these issues in as much detail as the fans do.

They get an unbelievable amount of data that we never see. Brian Smith once wrote an article where he used data about what part of the field players were tackled, how many were in the tackle and how many passes were made in each part of the field. I think there is a company who specialise in providing the data and most if not all clubs subscribe to it.

I know one thing though, numbers are not everybody's game and I wouldn't be surprised if some coaches don't look at the data very much at all. Where Hook sits in the province of numeracy is anybody's guess.
