What a crazy game of footy. Whenever they looked like getting away from us we pulled it back in our favour but whenever it looked like we might get on top the Storm pulled away from us again. And then we quite literally pulled off a football miracle at the end to win. And Waddell of all players came up with arguably the match defining play. I'm absolutely buzzing after watching that tonight.

We brought the crowd into the game by having a bloody go. It's not rocket science. Have a crack and the crowd usually responds. There was a buzz about the players tonight that they believed they could win, right up til the last 5 seconds. The crowd definitely picked up on that.

Was an even better atmosphere than the Roosters game though which is the main game I had in mind when I made the comment. For the entire 80 minutes as well. It was great, very emotional even, given the year we've had.

Awww Hells yeah.

Didn't see that coming all night. That try by Melbourne with 5/6 mins to go was the final nail I thought.
Waddell's brilliance made me smile, then I had a small thought "could we?".

Sheet yeah we could. That win gave me such a big high.
Our defence needs major improvement but at least we are playing a bit of footy with the ball lately.

Huge win tonight which will go down in knights history. Unfortunately however next week will most likely feature kidley and waddell as the forums greatest villains which I don't judge as they usually are for our side.

Was that Gagai who missed that tackle that led to the break? If so, he needs to be hooked

Haha you went off early.
Gagai again showed his class tonight When the team needed a big play he yet again came up with it. If only there were more players like him in the team that puts in every week with a never die attitude.

And as always humble as ever.

NRL.com
Down 24-14 with 10 minutes remaining in the game, it was the pure instinct of Gagai that allowed him to power his way over to score a vital try from dummy half. On top of that, the centre also contributed to the match-winning play by throwing the final pass for Akuila Uate's try after the fulltime siren had sounded.

While the adrenalin by game's end would have had him ignoring the pain, a quad injury almost derailed one of Gagai's biggest career highlights thus far and it wasn?t until after the warm-up that Gagai was ruled a certainty to play with Pat Mata'utia called into the team as 18th man.

Regardless of the courageous effort shown by Gagai, he played down any individual achievement and directed praise towards the efforts and the spirit shown by his teammates.

"I can't really describe the feeling. Obviously it felt good scoring but I wouldn't have scored that try if the boys hadn't got the ball down field so credit to everyone really. I'm not taking anything as an individual honour because it was awesome from all of us," Gagai told NRL.com.

"[As for the final try] I was just the delivery man. There was a lot of work that happened before the ball got to me so I can't take the credit for that. The boys in the middle did a great job in the box for us and then we had good shape and shifted it out wide and it was just a great team effort."

In game that also proved to be a memorable 150th game for teammate Chris Houston, Gagai couldn't help but also mention the Knights' will to win for their "brother" Alex McKinnon.

It was Newcastle's fixture in Round 3 against Melbourne where McKinnon suffered his horrific spinal injury and while Gagai insisted that it wasn't spoken about in the week leading up to Saturday's Storm re-match, he was under the belief that everyone realised that actions spoke louder than words in a performance that was sure to be in honour of their injured teammate.

"Everyone knew we had to dig deep for our brother and to come out with a win like that is an indescribable feeling," Gagai said.

"I have so much joy in me personally right now. I'm over the moon and I couldn't be any happier for the boys and to do it for Houston's 150th as well was another bonus."

In what has been a season of undeniable lows for the Knights, including last weekend's 50-10 capitulation against the Rabbitohs, the Brisbane Wests junior remained upbeat about the future in what has been a low season sprinkled with unforgettable moments.

For Gagai, his belief is inspired by the fans that support the team through adversity, noting that it was a credit to the Newcastle faithful that have stuck by the team through what has been a rollercoaster of the year.

"To have the support of the Newcastle fans still, even though we aren't going to make the top eight and to see them turn out in force and support their team and get behind us, I tell you what, you could hear it and you could feel it out on the field," Gagai said.

"Not only were we doing it for Alex or for Houso or the team ? we were doing it for the fans that turn up week-in, week-out that support us no matter what.

"It has obviously been a rough run for us but there are a lot of positives we can take out of it but at the end of the day you can't dwell on the past. We have to keep looking to the future."

That's a good read from Gagai there. Great to get a look into how he feels about the team and fans.

Also. Anyone feel like this was a more Stone-centric coach type of performance?! Watch the NSW. Cup game on fox yesterday and they play A really good expansive and entertain style of football. Great structure.

Loved seeing the Alex tribute on Gagai's wrist right in there with all the boys in the celebration. Special moment, I'm sure Alex would've loved it too:

We always play that way against Melbourne. In the semi against them last year we threw it around like crazy and our play for our early try was identical to our first try against them in the semi. Not sure why we don't do it more tbh. With every club trying to copy Melbourne these days surely that game plan would work against more sides.

Edit - funny part is when we were down by 10 with 2 to go I was still really happy because I was so proud of their effort to keep coming at the Storm all game. They really could have put their heads down and let Melbourne have their way with them at 12-0 down but they hung in there. There is still an obvious lack of organisation there in attack and defence but really, how hard can we be on them about that? The side has been a bloody transit lounge all year with players in and out of the squad. It's hard to play with much confidence in attack or defence there's that much change constantly.

Jesus I hope someone has at the club has already drawn up Sione's new contract. That kid is the goods. Smart, strong, tough and seemingly good hands.

Article above about Dane's pass to Uate, but Sione summed it up with a nice ball to Dane. Can't fornicate over it too much as none of them had any other option but to get the ball to the wing but it was beautiful to watch. That whole movement was soooo much better than everything we've produced this year in attack. Where has it been????

Enter Buzz f**king Killington...

Young Newcastle Knights fullback Sione Mata'utia will have scans on Monday for a suspected broken jaw, suffered in Saturday night's win over the Melbourne Storm at Hunter Stadium.

Mata'utia was on the end of a high tackle early in the second half but managed to finish the game.

The 18-year-old was a late inclusion, when Jarrod Mullen was ruled out. Captain Kurt Gidley shifted back into the halves for the youngest of the Mata'utia brothers to line-up for his third NRL game at fullback.

Mullen is expected to return in Round 23, when the Knights host the New Zealand Warriors at Hunter Stadium, so too is Beau Scott.

The other injury concern from the match was Robbie Rochow, who came off with concussion late in the game. He will need to pass the required concussion tests this week.

Hopefully Sione will be alright.

No mention of McManus there, safe to assume Chanel will maintain his spot in the wing?

Tough kid. Not even a penalty for the hit. And people are whining about the 7 nil penalty count to Newy in the second half. I'm assuming the culprit will receive a few weeks suspension.

Agreed...

On the attack front though, I think I have become increasingly disappointed with Tyrone's inability to put his stamp on a game and take charge.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate he is young and still developing and rate him highly - what I think I am loooking for is the organising half back in him to stand up and 'drive' the team forward, particularly when they get in the opposition red zone. We seem to match it with most teams (by virtue of Bennett's boring game plan) to eat metres to get up the field, when we complete sets andget good attacking field position.

We seem to be very one dimensional and rudderless when we have 3 or 4 tackles in the opposition 20 and don't develop or sustain pressure and that is where the halfback should taake a game by the scruff of the neck and shine for mine.

I realise he is the junior playmaker in the side (so Mullo and Gidley get first call) but for mine, he is the X factor in the playmaking for this side and while he does it in patches during the game, I think he needs to start stepping up consistently as the leader and owning his role there.

I don't know, maybe it is a confidence thing with him trying bark orders and managing the veterans in the side?

Like I said - have big wraps and a lot of time for him but still looking for him to own his role as a leader around the park...and i don't think it is about aa coach saying it to him, i think it is about his own self belief.

But what an awesone game to be at at on Saturday night

I think you're spot on. What we've really been missing is Sean Rudder. Ever since he left we haven't found a permanent halves pairing. Bring Rudder back!

I was expecting a 'Rudder' reference...problem is, Rudder didn't know how to operate a rudder, so he ain't the solution:D

Sean rudder is a premiership winning 5/8 and got us into the 2001 grand final with a pin point bomb against the sharks. The guy is a knights legend.
