Roosters v Panthers preview

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

http://nrl.com/News/MatchReports/MatchReportsArticle/tabid/336/NewsId/6721/Default.aspx

Well the bubble didn’t exactly burst, but the fairytale beginning to Brad Fittler’s coaching career at the Roosters lost a little bit of its lustre when he finally tasted defeat at the hands of the Gold Coast – a loss that puts the finals that little bit further out of their reach.
Nonetheless, it has been one of the most impressive starts to a coaching career.
Of the other 15 active coaches in the competition, Fittler joins only Wayne Bennett (Canberra) and Graham Murray (Illawarra) as coaches to record four victories in their first six matches.
He has gone by far the longest before losing for the first time, with a mark of 43 days.
But the play-offs dream isn’t over yet – two wins in the final fortnight could still be enough for an unlikely finals berth even though the side is three points adrift from eighth spot.
Standing in their way is a Panthers side with a new sniff of fresh blood about them – they may be running last but a comprehensive win over Newcastle last weekend has opened the door for them to offload the wooden spoon and they’d love nothing more than a win over their rivals from across the city.
When the Roosters meet the Panthers its East v West – a battle of the stereotypes.
The café latte-drinking Roosters of the more affluent Eastern Suburbs face off against the instant coffee-swilling Panthers of the blue collar Western Sydney.
(Of course there are many people who live in each area that are far from stereotypical – but it adds to the contest nonetheless.)
The Roosters have lost Setaimata Sa for the season through injury leaving Craig Wing to shift to halfback and Heath L’Estrange to join the side at hooker.
The only other changes are starting side/bench swaps, with Lopini Paea to start at prop for Danny Nutley and Anthony Tupou to start in the back row for Nate Myles.
Penrith coach Matthew Elliott has retained the same side that beat the Knights, with Peter Wallace added to make a five-man bench.
Trent Waterhouse will celebrate his 100th NRL game and as such will be looking for fond memories.
Watch out Roosters: The left-hand attacking side for the Panthers hit some devastating form last weekend, with both Frank Pritchard and Michael Jennings grabbing hat-tricks – Pritchard’s coming in the space of just 14 minutes!
The Kiwi back rower had 13 runs for 127 metres, 14 tackles, six tackle breaks, three line breaks and of course three tries to his name, while Jennings added six runs for 141 metres, 10 tackles, six tackle breaks and two line breaks to his three tries.
Both players are the top try-scorers for the Panthers club; Jennings now has 15 four-pointers, Pritchard 13 and they account for 32.2 per cent of all Panthers tries in 2007.
Watch out Panthers: The Panthers duo weren’t the only ones to get a hat-trick of tries at their last start – Roosters fullback Sam Perrett grabbed a treble of his own up at Carrara Stadium and has proven a real hit as a custodian since shifting from the wing or centres.
His 27 runs for 224 metres, eight tackle breaks and two line breaks kept the Roosters in the hunt against the Titans and he is becoming a go-to guy in the Roosters’ attack.
It was Perrett’s second career hat-trick – and he has now played more minutes in 2007 than any other player in the NRL with 1,777.
Where it will be won: While both sides will attack either side of the field it could be whichever team tightens up their middle the best that wins this clash.
The Panthers have conceded more tries up the middle than any other team except Newcastle with 33, while the Roosters aren’t that far behind, having leaked 27 up the guts.
The forwards on both sides need to contain the ball around the ruck and ensure they are prepared to make effort on effort without dropping off tackles.
Craig Wing could be the clincher here – he is one of the NRL’s most damaging dummy-half runners and while he’s named at halfback, he’ll spend plenty of time at hooker with Mitchell Pearce named on the bench.
The History: Played 70; Roosters 44, Panthers 25, drawn 1.
The Roosters have won four of the past five encounters against their 2003 grand final nemesis, including a 24-20 win in round 14.
Conclusion: The Roosters should start favourites here and have shown enough to suggest they can win this clash but the Panthers have nothing to lose and still have plenty of devastating attacking players.
The home side’s aim should be to get out of the blocks fast and establish a firm lead – maybe that will be enough to crush the Panthers’ interest and keep the Roosters’ finals dreams alive for one more weak at least.
Match officials: Referee – Steve Clark; Sideline Officials – Allen Foster & Jason Walsh; Video ref – Russell Smith.

The Roosters have points in them. But they got to stop pointing the panthers at the try line. The Chocolate Soldiers don't need an invitation.

After tonight only the current top 8 and the Broncos will have a chance to make the 8 meaning the winner of Tigers VS Souths will DEFINATELY be in the 8!

Chooks, to make the 8:
Chooks come back from 6-20 at halftime against Penrith to win
Tigers beat Bunnies

If they don't win, they are gone.
