IRRITATED Manly coach Des Hasler left Narrabeen yesterday declaring his bits-and-pieces squad will not only prove the punters wrong, but the rest of the NRL too in tomorrow's clash with the Warriors in Auckland.
Hasler slapped a media ban on his 19-man squad which left Sydney yesterday morning for New Zealand.
The Sea Eagles boss has faced a barrage of criticism from rival NRL clubs and pundits following his decision to rest five key players. But Hasler stood by his rookies yesterday morning, declaring: ``We are going over there to win.
``People can write us off if they want; we are not writing us off. We will be very competitive.
``They (supporters) will be seeing a very good Manly side. A Manly side which is going to win.''
Hasler was hopeful the injured group of Brett Stewart (knee), Brent Kite (back), Steven Bell (ribs), Luke Williamson (shoulder) and Glenn Stewart (sternum) would play in next week's final-round clash with the Dragons at Brookvale Oval.
``That's in the hands of our medical staff,'' Hasler said.
``It's (the criticism) an insult to the players as well. They are professional footballers and know what they are doing.''
Hasler said New Zealander Steve Matai would not play tomorrow but was making the trip to his homeland on an ``ambassador role'', while Bulldogs junior Jason Wells was set to earn a starting debut in the pack.
Rookies Michael Bani and Vic Mauro are also likely to make their debuts against the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium.
A final decision on half Matt Orford (calf) will be made before kick off.
``If there's any hint of him carrying an injury, he won't play,'' Hasler said. ``We've got Jason King and Travis Burns coming back; that's a bonus.''
Hasler said his young squad was not under any undue pressure to win.
``We are always under pressure to perform, the players demand it,'' he said.
``The Warriors are a good side, there's no doubt about that.''
