What's the Buzz: A dying wish to meet his hero, Kurt Gidley
SPORT isn't all about gossip and scandal. I received this beautiful email last week about the wonderful generosity of Knights star Kurt Gidley. I proudly hand over my column lead this morning to The Sunday Telegraph reader Shane Jacobs.
G'DAY BUZZ.
Last year I contacted Kurt Gidley about a young bloke (Joshua Smith) who had muscular dystrophy & he was very ill.
His one dying wish was to meet Kurt for his 21st birthday. I thought there would be no greater present for him than if I could get Kurt to come to Ballina to meet a champion young bloke who just loved Kurt.
Now I did not know Kurt at all but from the first time I spoke to him he said he was keen to help in any way. Kurt took leave for a day to fly to Ballina to spend the day with Josh.
Now this was all with Kurt's wife expecting their first child about 5 weeks later. He headed to Ballina, spent the day with Josh & also Josh's brother Cam & his best mate Nathan O'Connell who both have muscular dystrophy as well. Kurt brought up Knights, Blues & Australian gear for all the boys. What he did was unbelievable.
Unfortunately Josh did not make his 21st but meeting Kurt was the highlight of his short life.
I contacted Kurt again earlier this year & asked if he could get tickets to the Knights vs Titans game at Skilled Park for Cam (Titans supporter) & Nathan (Knights supporter) to attend.
He said leave it with me.
The week of the game he called me to let me know he had organised to get the boys into the sheds after the game.
What a thrill for these guys. They loved it.
We waited in the sheds for about 20 minutes for Kurt to finish his media commitments. When he arrived he spent about an hour chatting away to the boys. He also made sure every one of the Knights players & coach came over & got photos & autographs for the two boys. He was unbelievable. Nothing was too much problem for Kurt to organise. When he retires I hope the NRL use this guy in a way to help promote this great game. He is a credit to his family & the Newcastle Knights.
I will never, ever forget what Kurt did for these guys & I don't even follow the Knights. (Parra supporter unfortunately)
I have attached some pictures for you as well. If you need any more info please let me know.
I would like the Rugby League world to know what a terrific role model Kurt Gidley is for our great game.
All the best.
Cheers Shane.

The real way to stop people bagging people on the net beyond what is acceptable would be to make deletion of comments and posts a non option. Make it the equivalent of saying it in public. That way people will think twice before going too far.
Leave the mod stuff out of it please guys. Moderators are entitled to an opinion as well. That has nothing to do with the site.
Fred, time to stop dude.
My bad mate.
I dont believe what started this was an opinion, but it has gone on far too long. I have made my point. I am happy to leave it there.
Not a problem at all mate. I think Fred stopped talking opinion and started trying to inflame a while ago, as is the nature of people on forums.
By the way, I think I'm overdue to buy you a beer.
Captain Kurt Gidley returned to Newcastle with the team on Saturday morning after spending Friday night in hospital with a foot injury.
Gidley has had scans on his foot and is now required to see a specialist before the extent of his injury is known.
Updates will be posted on newcastleknights.com.au when they become available.
