You don’t think his performance here as assistant was impacted at all by the person he was assisting?

There’s a reason why Bennett picked Hornby twice and flicked Mary once..

How would anyone know what input & strategies Hornby contributed to or was ignored on.One thing is for sure the bloody three of them should have been sacked and not just one

This is true..

We don’t know..

All we have are reported facts..

Reported fact 1: Bennett arrives here, nominates Hornby as captain.

Reported fact 2: Bennett sacks McGregor.

Reported fact 3: We have churned through umpteen* assistant coaches since Mary was appointed

Reported fact 4: Bennett hires Hornby the minute he’s available.

As much as I’m dirty at Wayne for chasing the $$ after he won us our title, his record speaks for itself so I trust his judgment..

*pretty sure umpteen is now an official number as even the record keepers couldn’t keep count..

Maybe Forbes is coming from a different angle, but you have to admit that Benny copped his fair share of shit on these forums. It wouldn't be hard to go back and find where someone's bagging the shit out of him for poor coaching or calling for his sacking.

It seems odd to me that it's all poor Benny now that Bennett has picked him up whereas barely a peep in the thread that highlights it - https://forums.leagueunlimited.com/threads/football-department-review-finalised.478604/

I'm not suggesting the fans are to blame at all - just pointing out how fickle this place is.

Good luck to him. I admire him as a player, a Dragons captain and what is now considered very rare - a one club player. I think he'll do well as a coach eventually.

So true.. Many people are angry at the club.. But they’re letting that anger cloud their judgement..

So when Hornby is part of the club, he’s seen as part of the problem..

The minute he’s at another club, our club is to blame for how he’s been treated..

Ahh.. Agendas...

To be clear, I have never thought Hornby was a problem at the club.
I have laid the blame at the feet of the board for our mess.

I do think though based on his record for the Club, it would have been appropriate to announce his departure.

Great move on Hornby's part. He probably should have been looking for a similar role, under an experienced coach earlier. If in the future, Hornby could go to England and prove himself as a head coach there, or even in the NRL, I wouldn't be adverse to him coaching us in the future. He is a club legend and was captain of our 2010 premiership winning team.

My comment wasn't aimed at you Tru. It was more a general dig at the way this forum works.

And I agree on both of your other points - the board are the real issue and they should have given some recognition of his work. Even if they haven't in the past with other coaching staff they let go, Ben was a different scenario given all he has put into the club throughout his playing career.

Furious - is a bit of an understatement buddy . The J.V. is an absolute joke , how long we can remain in the NRL is what concerns me whilst our pack of imbeciles are running the show .

To lose good up and coming young players to other clubs , assistant coaches whom imo were better than our current clown while continuing to prop him up with others is a travesty of justice. The Dragon hierarchy have blood on their hands as they and they alone are responsible for the fall from grace of the Big Red V .
Dont fret Gaz. We wont get kicked out of the NRL the backlash nowadays would be too much to repair its image. Our only problem and I believe it will change with the next CEO by next year is picking our backsides off the floor of the ladder. Mary will not be coaching by next year so strap yourself as we are about to hit at least 2nd gear for a while

I am absolutely filthy about this. Ben Hornby to be is what St George is about. They guy knocked back more money at 3 clubs cause of his love for the dragons in his playing days yet we toss him to the gutter to satisfy a scum bag who only has his interests at heart and a bigger fraud who we parade as a coach.

Tell us what you really think?

That's a charitable view- liked him as a player but it's taken him five years to work out that he was working with a fool and the rest of us had Mary pegged a lot sooner- at best he's a slow learner.

Perhaps there are undisclosed reasons why Hornby stayed for as long as possible? His love for the club and area? Family? Contractural?

Etc., etc.

We will never know.

What is clear is that Bennett wanted him for specific reasons.

Is Hornby’s career move a reflection that (perhaps) Demetriou isn’t as much as he’s cracked up to be?

I just remembered his playing skills. Lovely to watch in attack, the way he would drift side ways with so many ball runners options. Then he would dummy and straighten up through a hole with support players everywhere. Never see any BACK up now. No pride in the jersey.
And if frizz wants to be a Rabbit and his hearts not with the Big V.. Then Hello Mitchell. We dont need players with there heart not in it for Saints.
