Wayne Bennett, Anthony Seibold set for early coaching swap in 2019

KNOWING South Sydney players are filthy at coach Anthony Seibold’s departure, Rabbitohs management will on Monday commence formal discussions with Brisbane to expedite a coach swap for next season.

The Daily Telegraph understands Rabbitohs management will contact Brisbane chief executive Paul White to kickstart talks to ensure Anthony Seibold would coach Brisbane with Wayne Bennett at Redfern in 2019.

The news comes with confirmation Seibold has lost the South Sydney dressing room.

Players don’t want to play under him next season, many venting their anger at a farewell function in Sydney for forward Jason Clark last week.

One well-placed source close to Souths described Seibold coaching Souths next season as “illogical and inconceivable.”

Brisbane would be left to foot a pay gap between paying out both coaches — approximately $600,000.

A planned phone hook-up was expected to occur on Sunday night between Souths general manager of football, Shane Richardson, CEO Blake Solly and possibly club chairman, Nick Pappas, to discuss the coaching drama.

Richardson is currently in England having face-to-face meetings with Bennett, who is coaching the English side in a three-Test series against New Zealand.

Souths have quickly arrived at the conclusion Seibold cannot coach at Redfern in 2019.

Rabbitohs players are dirty and have said they would struggle to “buy into” any of Seibold’s views and beliefs for 2019.

Privately, Souths believe Seibold has already started thinking and planning for life as a Brisbane Broncos coach.

The only obstacle in the probable coaching swap would be whether Bennett can be convinced to leave Brisbane a year early after telling Broncos players he would be there for 2019.

Bennett has constantly claimed he would not disappoint the playing group by leaving early.

But a straight swap would enable Bennett to leave with dignity and not be accused of breaking a promise to players.

The source close to Souths said it was hoped the coaching situation would be “nailed down and resolved” soon, possibly even by the end of this week.

Both clubs return to off-season training within the next fortnight.

While Souths would never admit it publicly, the club has been left disappointed at how they claim Seibold handled the situation.

There is a private belief he signed with Brisbane months ago but elected not to officially tell South Sydney, who felt they were “led on.”

Brisbane is expected to favourably receive a swap approach.

Bennett is already disgruntled at Red Hill having been overlooked for a contract extension while his assistant, Jason Demetriou, is also miffed at being brushed for the top job.

Having two upset coaches, Brisbane believe, would impact on results next season.

While in England, Richardson is also understood to be talking to Bennett about Tom and George Burgess, both off contact after next season.

Brother Sam has re-signed but there is a feeling South Sydney may not be able to afford retaining Tom and George and that one may be forced out.

Already see nit but link doesn’t work.

Pretty much he’s gonna test the market and wait til the coaching drama is settled which is holding him back.
Truthfully all he is doing is holding the club to ransom, its impossible to give him 1 mill a year when we already have 2 players on that each, our depth will be nil and honestly apart from his running from dummy half what else has he got, please tell me,his defence whilst yes he does a fair bit of tackling, in the test he was run over ,his passing in our last game was only fair,he isnt a million dollar player and if another club can give him more than 750 to 800 they can take him, but ill tell u there is no club apart from newcastle who has that kind of money spare and half is going to klemmer,if he goes, please cookie test yourself and your BS agent can leave if u dont like it,another case of no loyalty after we dug him up and perservered with him.

Come on Souths, let's get this sorted and get Cookie re-signed, it's an absolute MUST for us!!!

I'm with you too Mace, I was thinking it'd be possible for Seibs to coach in 2019 but I see now that there is absolutely no way that can happen if the players are filthy at him. It could be an friggin disaster of a year if he stays on and the disharmony could ruin the season before it starts. This would undo all the great work of 2019 and put us back a year or two when we are already building nicely.

A swap certainly has to happen and I want Bennett here so bad now! If a swap cannot be done, then we have to sack Seibs and get a caretaker coach for a year because we just can't have a coach that the players don't like or buy into. Hopefully this isn't needed though and a swap can be sorted.

Souths have 28 players in their 2019 squad and club legend John Sutton isn’t one of them

THE future of South Sydney’s favourite son John Sutton is in doubt, with the 309-game premiership-winning skipper a notable absentee from the Rabbitohs’ initial 2019 squad.

Sutton has been vocal about his desire to play on in the cardinal and myrtle, and it was understood the club was trying to free up enough space in their cap for next season to extend his stay at Redfern for a 16th season.

But Souths unveiled their roster on Friday, and Sutton was not one of their 28 players named.

They can add two more players to their squad but it’s now looking highly unlikely that they will be able to table a respectable offer to the back-rower.

Having lost Angus Crichton to the Roosters, it seemed Sutton’s signature would be a priority for Souths, who are now lacking significant depth in the back-row.

Earlier this month, Sutton’s manager Steve Gillis was confident the two parties were close to agreeing to an extension, but admitted they were in a holding pattern with pre-season fast approaching.

There are also rumours swirling that the club is looking to sign former rep star Trent Merrin, which would signal the end of Sutton’s time with his beloved Bunnies.

It is sure to cause some consternation within the club’s fan base, with Sutton considered a hero for sticking with Souths through their lean years, before leading them to their drought-breaking premiership in 2014.

The other big-name missing in the Rabbitohs’ roster is Robert Jennings.

Despite topping their try-scorers list in 2018 with an impressive 19 four-pointers from 21 games, the off-contract Tongan international has not been re-signed.

Foxsports.com.au has reached out to the club for comment.

Its all about the money, everyone better believe that, as long as bennet gets his money he will bend over,we may need to put in for the broncos to come to the party, if bennet needs 500k as advertised we may have to put in 200k for brisbane to go for it.
Seibold will need to be sacked and some1 else do the job otherwise it will be a disaster

I really like cook,,,,but I do not think he is even close to a million dollar player. Good season for sure. Spectacular runs from dummy half are sensational to watch but I thought he was very easily handled in the semis by the top teams. Defensively busy for sure but a not quite a full and rounded hooker is my thought.

Sutton and Cook are both away on holidays so I doubt anything will be signed for either over the next week or so.
I think Sutton is a priority as we receive huge salary cap discounts for him and he deserves a proper send off after his loyal service to the club.He is also very popular with the playing group.
Cookie still has a year to run on his contract and is probably waiting to see what unfolds re the coaching staff.
No need to panic yet!

The simple fact about Cook is that we don’t have a replacement for him if he leaves. There are no good hookers on the market and Josh Cook is still a good 2-3 years away from playing NRL. Hooker is a position you need to pay overs for because there’s no quality on the market ever. If there is they don’t stay available for long. I’d be happy paying overs for Cook in comparison to paying overs for Crichton because he’s an integral part of the side and isn’t easily replaceable.

I wonder if Jennings will stay?.....

I think Jennings will stay it’s probably just down to working out what’s fair for both parties. Jennings is playing outside of one of the best centres in the competition and it’s made him look a lot better than he is. I think with AJ and Jennings on the wing and with Allan at fullback we have a deadly backline, IF the Allan experiment works out.
