Wayne Bennett stands ground as Russell Crowe looms as key to ending coach standoff

Peter Badel, The Courier-Mail
November 27, 2018 6:09pm

Russell Crowe shapes as Souths’ final hope of fast-tracking Wayne Bennett’s exit from Brisbane as the super coach hit back at explosive claims he backstabbed the Broncos.

Bennett told News Corp Australia he plans to report for the official start of Brisbane’s pre-season on Monday – giving the Rabbitohs just five more days to engineer a straight swap with Anthony Seibold.

Should South Sydney fail to broker a compensation deal by the weekend, Bennett will push on with his aim to win a seventh premiership at Brisbane in his farewell season at Red Hill in 2019.

Rabbitohs hierarchy were stunned by the Red Hill stalemate last Saturday, when Bennett – bracing for termination – was advised by Broncos chairman Karl Morris that he would honour his deal next season.

Broncos bosses have decided they will not sack Bennett, nor rubber-stamp a $1 million payout.

That has upped the ante on the Rabbitohs, who contacted Brisbane powerbrokers almost three weeks ago outlining their desire to release Seibold and bring Bennett to Redfern before Christmas.

Well-placed sources say when the Rabbitohs blindsided the dithering Seibold by approaching Bennett, Souths owner Crowe backed the club to do whatever it took to snare the super coach.

Now the Hollywood megastar is the key to ending the messy Bennett-Seibold standoff.

With the Broncos refusing to offer a severance package, Crowe must decide whether to ratify and fund a full payout, plus any fresh deal for Bennett at Souths next year – an outlay of around $2 million.

Bennett was rocked by allegations he planned to be in charge of the Rabbitohs from Monday, claiming he made no such promise.

“I never agreed to be coaching Souths on December 3,” he said.

“When Shane Richardson (Souths general manager) recently flew to England (where Bennett was coaching the British team against the Kiwis), I said it was my preference for everything to be finalised by that date so we all had clarity.

“That was the day I was starting back at the Broncos.

“I didn’t want to be at the Broncos for a few days, only to be told I was being moved on to South Sydney.

“I’m due back at the Broncos on Monday and that’s where I plan to be.”

Broncos and Souths chiefs have been privately attempting to thrash out a complex settlement, but they didn’t bank on Bennett digging his heels in.

The Rabbitohs potentially have more to lose than the Broncos next season because Bennett has the support of the dressing room and never wanted to leave, while Seibold rejected a Souths extension.

For that reason, the Rabbitohs won’t give up on an immediate swap, but Bennett insists he won’t be falling on his sword at Brisbane to solve another club’s issues.

“Nothing has changed for me,” he said.

“I’ve agreed to coach Souths from 2020, so it was always my intention to be at the Broncos next year.

“Until I’m told otherwise, I’m committed to honouring my deal with the Broncos.”

Yea I agree actually. Like I say, this where we really need to play hardball with Bennett and pretty much give him an offer that he can't turn down. Either way, we need this sorted!

Signing a young hooker for half the money is not a bad idea actually.

Russell Crowe shapes as Souths’ final hope of fast-tracking Wayne Bennett’s exit from Brisbane as the super coach hit back at explosive claims he backstabbed the Broncos.

“Nothing has changed for me,” he said.

“I’ve agreed to coach Souths from 2020, so it was always my intention to be at the Broncos next year.

“Until I’m told otherwise, I’m committed to honouring my deal with the Broncos.”

I deleted half the above to make room so, ….

I have absolutely no idea why any club, with half an eye on winning a premiership, would want Bennet. The man is old news with old ideas. I hope Crowe has as much sense as I think he has and tears up the Souths/Bennett contract and buys a young up and coming coach, with fresh ideas and direction.

If you look at what Siebold achieved, with the ideas of really quick play the ball, off the Burgess brothers standing and playing the ball quickly, this allowing exciting and free flowing backline point scoring, he nearly got the team to the grand final. Just a simple and fresh new idea, that all.
All Siebold failed to do was change a few things against the Rooster in the semi final.
The Roosters where waiting for everything Souths threw at them in that game and they even used a South move against them that brought them a try. Souths played the same old game.

The Roosters exploited the glaring weakness of Johnston at fullback, they scored three try's and Johnston didn't get one tiny finger in any way of stopping them. Everybody knows Johnston's inability in defense, absolutely everybody that watched his career not just this year but the last four (?) knows this. The guy won't tackle, everybody else does but he won't, so he has a weakness and the Roosters exploited it, they'd be stupid not to.

Do you think Inglis would have missed those two tackles or stop that try from that kick, maybe the kick try but not the two trys that needed some 'putting your body on the line' defense.
Wish Johnston the best (at Cronulla) don't let the door hid you in the arse on the way out, old son.

Bring back the coach from the Raiders, the one that left this year, anybody but that miserable bastard Bennett

Possibly the most sense I’ve read on this forum this year!

Welcome to the forum mate!!

I disagree about Bennett though, I think he still has a lot to offer. He is one of the best coaches of all time and has a real burning desire to win another Premiership before he retires, the desire will be even greater once he arrives at Redfern. Players love him and love playing for him and he seems to get everyone pulling in the same direction. I think he'll fit in really well with the culture of our club too.

Plus, Bennett will hopefully bring Demetriou with him as an assistant and he will be groomed to take over in 2022 which will be great!

On another note, in regards to Cookie, the Knights can piss off!!
