So you think that Isaac Tago had some sort of “I can’t believe he benched me” moment and just decided that all of a sudden he’d better start playing better….. are you joking? If that was the case, he’d never be playing in that team again.

Tago isn’t individually playing that much different, the team is just playing better.

Let's just have a quick look at this stats before and after:

Averages per matchRounds 1-6Rounds 7-16
Tries0.330.25
Try Assists0.330.00
Line Breaks0.000.13
Tackle Breaks0.502.50
Offloads0.330.50
Receipts1915
Running Metres118.17 (6.22 per run)114.50 (7.63 per run)
Post Contact Metres42.67 (36% of all run metres)45.35 (40% of all run metres)
Tackles16.6716.50
Missed Tackles3.00 (85%)1.50 (92%)
Errors1.000.75
Penalties / Six Agains0.831.00

Considering the main complaints against Tago were his defence, discipline and not running hard - he's improved significantly in 2 of those areas.

Running:
Tackle Breaks up 500%
Extra 1.5m per run
Higher percentage of running metres are PCM (up 11%)

Defence:
Missed Tackles have been cut in half (game on game)

Discipline:
Slightly less errors, slightly more penalties/six again

My eye test told me that he had a rocket put up him. The stats confirm it.
Once Cleary, Martin and To'o come back, he should kick even further.

He also needs to be thankful that Garner got injured in that Round 7 game. Because if Tago only got 10-15 junk minutes in that game, the trajectory could have gone completely the opposite way.

Fantastic work with the stats they'll make @Iamback moist for sure.

The stats don't prove he got a rocket. That's just your guess. He could have been playing with niggles or it could be the competition, or the player(s) around him contributing or other matters that we are not aware of. Not saying that you are wrong, but the stats only indicate (not prove) that his performance has improved in some areas.

Your eye is seeing the entire team improve.

Why did benching Tago suddenly make Cleary start defending properly and straighten our attack?

Why did benching Tago improve both our edge defences?

It makes very little sense

That just makes me believe even harder that it's a mental thing with tago.

The problem with Alamoti at 14 isn't that he wouldn't be valuable, its whether getting 0-10 minutes off the bench week in week out destabilises his game more than 80 minutes at cup level would.

How do you explain the rest of the team also improving at that moment? It makes very little sense. They all pulled their fingers out.

I don't think it was simultaneous but I don't see how anyone can argue Tago has played with so much intent since his pec injury outside finals. I gentle dropping and likely word from Ivan seems to have had the desired effect. Really vs the warriors was the first genuinely good team game this year.

I have no real answers here. Maybe the pec injury that Tago had got into his mind.....I mean who knows.

The important thing I believe, is that they are all improving ATM. I hope they're able to bring it come Thursday night, after a real short prep. The dogs will be firing on all cylinders. I hope Ivan and crew have some tricks up their collective sleeves.

It is great to see him back playing much better, as with the rest of the squad.

I was so happy to see how Leota led the pigs round the park last weekend.......he was amazing.

Your eye is seeing the entire team improve.

We've had some pretty dogshit performances as a team since he was benched, and even his harshest critic (@Chins) is on the record in those matches saying how good Tago played.

Yes, a rising tide lifts all ships - but individually Tago before/after his benching is night and day.

Also, yes. Cleary's defence has also improved before and after 87% - 95%, but Liam Martin's defence has decreased 88% - 84%. And Schneider is also at around 87% when playing full games.

Last year Tago missed tackles for fun. It didn't matter who was next to him. It didn't matter which side of the field he was on. The only constant was his shirt grabbing.

Since his benching, he's the opposite.

I don't really give a f**k if the benching was the true catalyst - I just want him playing great footy.

Probably. But we dont really know. There can be a million different things going on in a person's life.

I think its more likely the team was getting too comfortable, and got a collective rocket that has changed things and Tago has been swept up in that. That said, he may have decided he likes playing closer to the edge and has worked harder to keep that spot.

My real worry is what Crichton and Kiraz will possibly do to our Left edge defence. Casey will need a huge game in defence or this will be his greatest learning game from the master being "Critta".

Losing Sorensen doesn't help either. Gotta make sure we pick the best guy to defend next to Tailagi.

That edge will be absolutely tested in defence. If the Dogs have been watching the tape then they'll know Jenkins doesn't mind getting up close for an intercept. Edwards will have to be ready for some short kicks in behind.

Hopefully notes have been taken by Ivan on the dangers of the dogs attack.

Should be a great game.

Winning this contest means nullifying the Dog's early physicality and disrupting their ruck rhythm. That starts with Moses and Lindsay winning the initial contact and ensuring quick line retreat is limited. Talagi’s short-side awareness, quick thinking and agility along with Naths’s ability to control tempo through long kicks will be vital in turning the Bulldogs around. Critta needs to be contained (easier said than done), giving Connor Tracey some attention with bombs all night might elicit an error or two..this one will be tough but very doable if we play with our last games intensity..
