I’m not Brown’s biggest fan (although he was good in the trials and today) but he does things at speed, including distributing the ball in a shift play, which forces the defence to make a decision. JA doesnt. They can simply wait and see what he does and cover accordingly. You need to look at more than just the stats.
If he was really forcing the defence to make mistakes he would have more assists. Drown's best contribution in the halves is that he can dig in and get a quick play-the-ball, allowing Moses and Gutherson to play off the back of that.

In terms of the overall performance we still dont seem ruthless enough like a storm or penrith when we have teams on the throat we just revert back to this lazy attitude in games.

It was similar to a game against the tigers last year on easter monday whenever we got out to a 14 point lead we then just switch off for 20 mins and all of sudden scores a level again.

We have won the game and its early days being round 1. But i am still concerned after today that just mentally we just drift in and out of games too much.
If scrappy performances in round one are good enough for the Roosters and Storm they're good enough for us. At least we won, and against a finalist from last year as well. The Titans could turn out to be a top six team or better this year.

The Titans were scoring at will as well up to a point. Do you have a scapegoat for whatever stopped that trend? Games change. The reason doesn't always have to support an agenda.
I referenced tries to make a point, but I was referring to our overall attack. It went limp once JA came on. Yes games change and it’s useful to look at what happened that may have contributed to that change. JA coming on and shifting Drown to centre was a pretty significant moment when you consider our attack was on fire up until that point.

Do you think coaches look at video and just say, ah well games change. Or do you think they look for reasons why they change? If so, do you think they look at player performances and make selection decisions based on this? Again, if so, why can’t we also do something similar on here in a thread developed to talk about the game FFS?

Our shift plays rely on Gutho throwing the money ball on the left as he’s probably the best ballplaying fullback in the comp, so that’s why he gets so many assists and Drowns are down (too far down for my liking). As you know, I’m not Drown’s biggest fan as a half but he has impressed me so far this year in the games I’ve seen. He’s digging in to the line and straightening up the attack before shifting out and creating space on the edges. That’s what the good halves do.

Matterson has played 6 before in first grade and as junior. So has cartwright.

Wouldn't be ideal but if thats the cards you get dealt with during a match you just have to deal with it.
The way they were used at 6 doesn't suit modern structures, either in attack or defence. It's why halves just aren't that heavy these days. They need mobility in attack and defence rather than just being a threat to run and pass.

Stats is all he looks at, unless they don't suit his argument then he goes off on another tangent that makes you go down the rabbit hole until you forget what you were even talking about in the first place. Never go full Pou.
Stats require context, and most of you merkins lack it.

Look i also think its on the leaders on the field just as much as BA we drift out of games after getting to a 14-16 point lead.

BA called it out on a post match presser about it after a win last year but then said a week later he thought he was too harsh on them. So he thought it was an issue. Then it wasn't an issue. But the game from memory was the tigers game he called it out on i thought he was spot on.

But there seems a thing with this side whenever things get too easy especially scoring points we seem to lose our defensive steel very quickly. Warriors game as well last year shoot out to a 24-0 lead then decided we didn't really want to tackle for the next 60 mins when we could have put 50 on them if we were smart.
We absolutely lack cool heads in our leadership group. On the upside they are tough and put in the effort. They just have a tendency to switch off and play dumb when the pressure is off.

Where are we at? Do people feel we are close to premiership?
2017 was our best side and chance. Are we better now? Its to early to tell but I don't think so. We had Manu Mau and Semi.
Genuine game breakers.
That 2017 side overachieved. This year's team is the best chance since 2005. The '09 team snuck into that grand final from 8th place, and missed the finals either side of the grand final year. They weren't genuine contenders.

This year we are genuine contenders, we should be in the top four chances, so I'm saying we're about a 20% chance of winning. Better than most teams, but still an 80% chance of not winning. There's no guarantees. Next year we'll be a less than 20% chance, maybe even no chance. But the rebuild should be quick if the front office is as professional as they appear to be. We could be an outside shot in 2024 and genuine contenders again by '25.

I never said otherwise. Russell had to put his body on the line for his tries. He didn’t have the red carpet rolled out for him like the tries we let in.
What's that got to do with the fact that he didn't have a winger in front of him? He was able to challenge the fullback because we worked an overlap, not because his opposing winger didn't "StAy On YoUr MaN fFs!!1" It was the same with the tries they scored on our right edge. The difference was we didn't have a fullback coming across in cover.

Brett Kenny had no kicking game either. Terrible in the halves.
There was f**k all kick pressure in the eighties. In fact there was f**k all sustained defensive intensity at all prior to about 2002. Quick play-the-balls were easy to come by on any tackle. Rugby league during Kenny's era looked like NRLW with more punching.

…and we were lucky to hold onto the lead obtained when he was off the field. So you’re saying we have JA taking up a bench spot in the event we have to play boring, slow and without creativity. Gotcha.
How involved was Drown in our tries? Apart from the one where he toed ahead a kick his best attacking involvement was a quick play-the-ball. Go and watch the highlights again:

Try 1: Drown plays the ball with Gutherson first receiver on the short side.

Try 2: Drown toes ahead the rebound from Moses' kick.

Try 3: Drown is first receiver on the right, with Moses first receiver on the left and Gutherson out the back.

Try 4: Drown is out wide and picks up a loose offload before passing immediately to Moses wrapping behind him.

Try 5: Drown plays the ball between the posts with Gutherson first receiver and Moses second receiver.

So you could argue that Drown's ability to get out of the way lets Moses and Gutherson get more involved when they're needed, but really the fact we suddenly gave up so much possession and so many points shows there was a mentality change from both teams after we got 14 points in front, and it wasn't fixed at halftime. Blaming Jake Arthur for this is just looking for the scapegoat you already had lined up. The fact is we fixed our shit after the Titans' final try and ground out the win, and Jake Arthur was part of that.

JA coming on and shifting Drown to centre was a pretty significant moment when you consider our attack was on fire up until that point.
It also coincided with our lead stretching beyond two tries. We put the cue in the rack and the Titans smelled blood. The evidence of this was our defensive collapse, most visibly on the opposite side of the field from where Arthur was defending.
Do you think coaches look at video and just say, ah well games change. Or do you think they look for reasons why they change? See above. Russell left the field right after the score blew out. The change in our defensive intensity reflects something bigger than just Jake Arthur stifling our attack. I'm sure our attack would have struggled even if Russell had stayed on the field because we had obviously clocked off. The only reason you wouldn't notice this is because you wanted to blame a single player. Or you noticed our drop in intensity and blamed that on Arthur as well.

It is what the good halves do but even Nathan Cleary sometimes hits the short runner. He doesn't just pass it out the back or go for the quick play-the-ball.

I like how I haven't read the shit posted here in like fifty years, but it hasn't changed from Pou just arguing any point for the sake of argument and not because he actually believes the shit that spews all over the keyboard.

I believe all my shit. The point is I don't believe any of it strongly. There are always multiple ways to interpret data and even to interpret what you see with your own eyes. As an easy-to-understand (I hope) example, I thought we would win, but thought the Titans were a good enough chance that I had $20 on them. After the game I haven't changed my mind. The Titans were a good chance and $3 was good value for them even though they lost. Some of the smooth brains around here would say that any amount was a poor price for the Titans because they ended up losing.

And in fact if they had been saying before the game that the Titans were no chance they would now be crowing that they were right because the Titans lost. I would still say that they are wrong. This is the difference between how the world is seen by someone who understands probability and someone who doesn't.
