Rd19: Parra v Broncos GAME DAY THREAD @ Commbank 21/7/22

One thing that was glaring to me, and frustrated the crap out of me more than anything else

Broncos forwards were running off flatter passes heck of a lot more often than we were, and rolling through better

We regularly seemed to throw the ball back 3-5 metres for the runner to do a hit up, Ponys defence was up in our face in line with where the play the ball was basically.

This is one of the most basic drills we should be getting right every set, considering our forwards are our perceived strength. We should never be getting dominated this way, not for any great or little period.

Its either poor coaching (not enough repetetive drills at training) or the players are just not switched on and focused to do this on game day. Reeds service hasnt been the best this year, but guys should be timing their runs a lot better, so he can do his job better

There were times where Reed sent out a bullet flat pass to a hit up runner, and we gained metres really well, and we had some power runs, and gaps opened out wide in the Ponys defence.

We get this part of the game on song and we are 50/50 to beat Penrith next week. Unfortuntely mentally it seems theres quite a few players on a different page

I know Penisini is just a kid. But lord where has his electric pace gone? Last year and earlier in the year he was dynamic. A must signing long term. Either he is carrying a niggle or is the grind of regular NRL mentally draining him some, particularly confidence? No idea

Is Opacic still around? Waqa and Russell would be my wingers.

Anyhow, depresssing we are not playing better, we have the ability. Bench selection and game time utilisation for all 4 has to be better moving forward

Can we turn it around like we did last year after terrible losses late in the year?
At this juncture it doesnt appear so. Be glorious if we did. I think every Parra fan hopes so
I don't think so, this team might be able to do it once in the next few weeks but will lose the desire to do it the following week.

BA doesn't have the risk taking on him to change how we played

I think our team will get themselves up (motivated, psyched, whatever...) for the Panthers game - but we've become so mentally fragile and low on instinct/confidence (with poor performances and losses in those individual games that apparently don't mattter...) that the minute Coach's one and only "plan a" doesn't keep us in front or within 6 points, these merkins will probably fold and turn on each other.

We do have a plan B. You saw it in all that frantic shit in the second half on Thursday. How many teams can reliably come back from a 20 point deficit against a strong defensive team like the Broncos? The top teams don’t win because they can score at will, they win because their defence keeps the score close and allows them to build pressure.

To this end, criticising our attacking tactics betrays your sole desire to put shit on the coach. Surely our defence is enough of a shambles for you to pick whichever scapegoat you want. But our attack is fine. Our record this year proves it. It’s our defence that’s the problem.

That wasn't a "plan". That was a bunch of desperate merkins starting to play to their instincts, when the plan (and their execution of it) resulted in them being behind by too much at half time.

I have many desires... but putting shit on the coach when the team is (again) sliding down the latter in the second half of the season under his watch (attack and defence) is not my sole desire.

So you've got it wrong again Poupou Escobar, and your repeated desire to play the man has you attempting to portray any comment critical of the coach into a "sole desire" - when it's not even something I (or most people) would want to be typing about at all to be honest.

No their defence resulted in them being behind by too much at half time. They scored two tries in the first half ffs. More than the Panthers in their game tonight. The difference is our defence was too poor for two tries in a half to suffice.

Look how frantic Melbourne’s attack looks when they’re a couple of tries behind. It’s called scoreboard pressure. It makes it hard to build pressure on the opposition because they’re not the ones who need to score.
