People overestimate the risk in going for the short dropout. The biggest risk is you don't go 10 and give away a penalty, but that doesn't apply when the opposition is chasing a big total. As for territory they're usually back in the twenty on the second or third anyway, and you've saved yourself running out to meet them and have a set defensive line. This is why we are seeing the short dropout more and more.
Well in a waybyes but a short drop out if you dont get ball means they have 4 shots at you. Being you tackle them in the first kick. A standard drop out means they need 3 runs together to your 10. They get 2 shots at you or 3 at best. So it's a difference for sure.
